Actually, apparently Sony made the PSP easy to port Linux on to... or other applications for that matter. So someone could create a GBA/NES/SNES emulator for the PSP and have the ROMS on the Memory Stick Duo (or whatever its storage is). As dirty as that would be... it could happen.

Somebody is probably working on a way to do it right now (if they haven't already figured it out). Granted, it would be pretty scary to tear apart your new $250 PSP and experiment on it, but there are people that enjoy doing this sort of thing. If they're successful, more power to them, I say.

Given the memory stick, yes, some LINUX nut will get it up and running within 60 days.
Expect classic gaming emulators to appear for the PSP by years end.

I have no doubt that this will happen.

The idea doesn't seem so far-feched. If someone created a firmware update that included a modified GBA emulator, they could load the roms to a memory stick DUO, then play it that way. But that's all relying on the emulator. But why stop at GBA? You could do SNES, Genesis, and NES. Maybe even some of the older legacy systems. Don't knock the idea yet.

i would imagine. when a new gadget comes out that offers an opportunity for someone to illegally emulate games, it will always become possible in due time. just give the pirates enough time to conduct their illegal activity, and they will eventually make it available for everyone to steal.

the japanese psp has been out for awhile longer, youd think there would be something out already

Actually, most emulation software seems to come from the US or Europe. Apparently, the Japanese actually *pay* for their games. Strange huh?

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. Without a way to install a supplemental flash ROM and a switch, hacking the firmware will be very difficult to maintain. Sony can easily test firmware integrity every time you access and online game server and cand so as well in new game releases. Any time a hack firmware version appears Sony can decalre that a major new game release requires an update due to a bug in all existing versions. Running the game on PSP's that aren't updated will result in the update being installed automatically.
The firmware hacking also supposes there is lots of free space available in the existing version additional code for apps. (A consideration missed by those suckered by the first fimrware update hoax that had myriad applications added.) Since this isn't the relatively roomy setup of a PStwo, it seems doubtful that any modchips will appear that don't require a great deal of skill to install.
This leaves finding a bug to enable code launching from Memory Stick to get the emulator or other homebrew app running. Again, this is contingent on the firmware remaining under user control with all of the problems listed above applying. It appears that any solution will require cutting oneself off from running legitimate software. With no second source for UMDs in the foreseeable future that doesn't seem like a worthwhile undertaking for the cost.
Hackers have had five months with the Japanese units already and thus far not a single real homebrew app has been demonstrated running. By comparison, there were demos running natively on the DS within days of its launch. Although Nintnedo is fierce in their pursuit of commercial pirates, it doesn't hurt them in any great way to have a homebrew market on hardware sold for break or a minor profit. Sony, OTOH, starts off in the hole for each PSP sold and faces a real crisis if a large portion of the PSP base is used for things that don't generate revenue for Sony. Thus Sony has reason to be much more diligent in making things difficult as possible for unauthorized PSP development efforts.

I second that. I would love to play my Castlevania games on the PSP, with that nice big and bright screen. Time will tell.

I don't know much about hacking or modding any systems, but would you really need to hack the psp? Wouldn't you just be able to put the emu on the memory card and go to the game menu and memory card and see it there? Kind of like how you do music, photo's and videos on the psp?

You cannot do that. The system only supports specific file types and absolutely will not run code from Memory Stick. There is no context offered for running apps from Stick. This is why a system flaw like a buffer ovverun would need to be discovered before such could happen. Such a flaw would quickly come to Sony's attention and they would take action in the form of a mandatory firmware update.

I'm just curious. What is that option used under the games menu that says memory stick and if you click on it, it says "there are no games". It looks like to me that there's a way to put games on the memory stick and play them. I would guess using the same way that you could probably execute programs from the memory stick under the games\memory stick menu too.
I can't think of what else this option would be used for. I could be completely wrong, but what do you think this option is used for?
