I'm not sure if it bothers anyone else, but something that makes me run far away from an auction is seeing a picture of a perfectly good game case with the disc outside of the case and sitting on the ground (carpet, tile, lino, etc).

I understand that people think they are proving that they actually have the disc and aren't with it enough to take a picture of the game inside the case, but it shows me that the auctioneer isn't the kind of person I want to have previously-owned my used games.

[I'm also not ragging on people with caseless games; some things can't be helped.]

Yes it can. Even a CD jewel case is better than laying it on the floor, original case or not.

I know what you're talking about, it does seem bad. Especially when they describe the game as in mint condition, which leaving it on the carpet is asking for it to be scratched.

I too, hate when sellers take the disc out of the case and place it on anything. When I display a game, I open the case, and keep the game inside.

Your not alone, it seems a lot of auctions I see are discs on desks. I can see the scratches being put on the disc when the owner is trying to scrape it up off of the rough surface and I stay the hell away.

I have no problem however if the discs are set on a soft surface that won't scratch them, In fact that's usually how I do it, I set them on a nice soft blanket.

EDIT: The main reason I don't display them in the case is because with current gen/ps1 games I like to show the instructions as well as the front/back case art and disc. So I lay out the case flat, put the disc and instructions underneath it and take my picture.

You know, I was thinking that. But what if the seller is really poor, doesn't have any other games, music CDs, or DVD movies, and is really drunk. Really drunk. Also, rolling.

I remember there was a guy on these boards trying to whore out one of his rare PSX games as "new."

He claimed that it was sealed and that he only opened the SEALED game to see if the disc would work.

He then had the gaul to say when he put it back in the case, the back of the case gave the disc tiny little microscratches.

Biggest load of BS I ever heard in all of my life.

Nope, I post all by game auctions that way and it doesn't seem to hurt the prices one bit.

I don't know what kind of carpet you have, but mine is soft and won't scratch anything.

I usually take the disc out and hold it at the edges at one hand while taking a picture of the bottom of the disc to show that there are no scratches. That usually works fine for me.

Amen. Most of us don't have shards of glass and rocks jamed in our carpet.

I agree 100% with you. I would never bid on a game in which the CD is on the carpet or table. The only thing that should ever touch the surface of a disc is a cotton cleaning cloth, not the floor.

Personally I rather bid on a game with no pic than a game thats been on the floor.

Maybe so, but it doesn't take someone with a materials science degree to know that it's more likely for a disc to get scratched when it comes in contact with something rather than when it comes in contact with nothing.

Yes so if you want your disks in mint condition NEVER put them in your PS2.

OH, Im sorry I didn't know that your discs magically float in the air. Think about it. When you put a disc in a PS2 it lays on a piece of plastic. That doesn't scratch it.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I just think that as long as people are just setting them there for a second they are fine. Its not like they are rubbing them on the floor.

i dont care if i buy a game that has light scratches as long as it plays fine.

if it doesnt play, i pay the $4 and getting it resurfaced(depending on how cheap i bought it)

The PS2 is designed for discs though. There is never a real reason to put them surface down on anything else even for a second. If they would just lay a cotton cloth down that would be better. If I were to borrow someone's game or DVD I certainly wouldn't do it. Even if "for a second" the chance of a grain of sand or dirt on the floor scratching the disc is there.

I used to put my discs on a blanket under the case (to show the box art) alongside the manual for my eBay pics.

But now I just take a pic of the opened case with the disc inside (so the manual is on the left and you can't see the box art).

Though the reason I do it that way is because it is quicker and easier for me than having to take the disc and manual out and arrange everything just so. (I can take pics of 7 or 8 games in probably less than a third of the time.)

Doesn't bother me if the seller's pic has the game sitting on carpet or whatever. But I'm not too picky about the condition as long as it plays. Although I do get a little miffed if the seller actually says 'mint' or 'like new' or 'no scratches' and when it arrives I find that to not be the case. I've actually stopped putting anything like that on most of my auctions as it seems everyone has their own idea what they really mean. Plus it's easier to not have to examine every disc I sell with a fine tooth comb. (And those fine tooth combs tend to really scratch the fuck out of a disc anyway.)

There's not much excuse for a disc data-side down on a carpet or the like- I mean, you can get an eyeglass cloth at Wal-mart for a dollar that's plenty big enough for a disc to sit on. (Not to mention providing an easy way to pick up and put back the disc without risking fingerprints.)

doesn't bother me, but I'll take the disc out and lay it on a soft blanket with the manual and the box so that I can get it all in one picture, but I don't claim "mint"
