I just tried to do a Microsoft Update since recently I formatted my drive, but no matter what I do, I can't install it. Uhh..basically what gives and why is it doing this to me? Could it be a trojan or a virus that is causing this?

Do you have the retail edition of Window installed on your PC? I'm not sure if it works with Crack copies.

Do you do the auto-update where that little icon shows up in the taskbar? Does it just sit there saying "Updates downloaded" or something similar?
Have you tried doing the update through Internet Explorer and doing it that way?

I did the update by going through the start menu and then going to all programs and so on.

Yup, I should change my custom rank from Worst Poster on CAG to One Who Is Always in Computer Trouble or something like that. I mean, I did the format and installed most of my programs back (i.e. the usual spybot, peerguardian2, Spyblaster, adaware, etc.) and now the computer runs fine except I can't get Windows Updates.
Let me as you this then, do you actually need them really. I mean, I have all the spy programs as well as a firewall and a A/V protection and all of the spy cleaners, so is there still any need for them. I'm a pretty safe computer user for the most part, and try to keep it clean.

Boot to the Command Prompt by hitting F8 (before the XP 'Splash' screen and choosing it from the menu. Type C: <ENTER>. Then type chkdsk /f <ENTER>. If you say you have 23GB free on your C: maybe your FAT/NTFS table is corrupt and reporting incorrecting filesizes/free space. This should correct that.
Also, try emptying your temp folder by clicking START>RUN. Then type %temp% and hit OK. It should bring you to your Windows temp folder. Highlight all that crap and delete it and see if that helps.

Son of a fucking bitch. Stupid piece of shit microsoft. What the fuck.!!!!!!!!!
O.K. Sorry for the cursing. That might have been out of place of me, but this really pisses me off. So all day yesterday I couldn't get Microsoft Updates and it kept saying all kinds of BS reasons for why I couldn't. Today I did everything that people told me to do and still nothing. And thanks go out to all those that tried to help. I kept my cool, mostly, through out this and wasn't going to format my drive again and was just going to rely on spyware removers, A/V/, a firewall, etc. to keep me safe. But now I decided to give it one last try and bam, it loads up and lets me install the updates and everything is good. What gives? Was MS Update/their website down yesterday and part of today? Well whatever since I'm glad now that I got them.
Now I don't remember everything on SP2 like I used to, but would you guys recommend installing it? I know it has all kinds of adverse affects to some PC games when you try to play them online (thankfully I don't have any of the ones that I know of), but does it really do anything good?

Could have been a firewall issue, who knows, honestly I have stayed away from installing SP2 on my home machine, but I have installed it on our work machines and besides the overpowering windows firewall, it really isn't all that bad, your call though.

Good to hear you got it to work before reformatting. I wasn't as lucky with my problems. I'm still in the process of reinstalling all my programs.

I don't think it was the firewall since I checked and checked and double checked and triple checked to make sure that it was permitted to go through and I don't think it was blocked. Thnaks for the support, and that's what I mostly hear about MS SP2. I don't think I had it installed before, but a lot of my friends do and have sort of been pressuring me, saying it's all great but I don't really believe them. I've also heard of that Windows Firewall issue as it can block so many of your ports that it can be very difficult to get large info quickly, even on a cable modem.

I have never seen it affect data transmission, we even use ISA server for our corporate firewall, but it seems like if you disable it, especially on a DHCP network, it will re-enable on the first reboot, I have never seen it block any ports that would stop: file-sharing programs, or any of the games I play on-line when I jack our network. I have to use ISA to do that.

I know that the Windows firewall that comes with SP2 that is supposed "help" you be safer while surfing blocks only certain video games. I know it does it for Rainbow Six 3: Black Spear or something like that and some others. Gamespot had an article with a mostly full and detailed list of games that would not work. It came out about right around the same time as when SP2 came out. About it blocking ports and such, I've heard that it can do that with certain websites with streaming video, making them go almost at a snail's pace either to load up or just to get it. I know that with certain P2P/file-sharing networks that it can slow the download speeds since you cannot get mutiple connections for the same file. I know that Soulseek supposedly can have troubles with it and some other file-sharing networks.

Installing SP2 isn't going to be a choice for much longer. Too many current post-SP2 and future updates make it a requirement. Microsoft will soon be disabling the function that allowed businesses to prevent it from being an automatic download. It has been more than enough time for those businesses to assess their critical software for compatibility and take the according action to obtain updates or replacements.

I've had a pretty bad experience with SP2. It took three installs to get it working correctly on my Dell. And after three tries I still couldn't get it to work on my custom built PC. Everytime I installed SP2 windows would fail to start up and I had to reinstall the whole damn thing over again. Windows that is...not just SP2.

I'm pretty sure taht this is the article from Gamespot on SP2 conflicting with some games. I believe that there was another article on SP2 that came out at a later date after SP2 had finally come out in which it stated some other problems between games and SP2. I couldn't find the latter article but at least I can give you one of them.

Quite a few of the games that are on the list are games that I own. I know that with Warcraft III, Starcraft, and Star Wars: KOTOR had given me and my friends some issues on their computers after we tried to get to the internet when they had SP2 on their machines.

Damn sorry I missed this thread. Would've been more help earlier.
hiccuple, don't use the FW in SP2, it's better than it was in SP1, though nothing worth using IMHO. I'd download the free version of Zonealarm and use it because it's A) more configurable than Windows firewall, B) updated more frequently for problems and C) works perfectly with SP2. When you install ZoneAlarm, Windows should automatically turn off the Windows Firewall and interface with it through the Security Center. If not, turn the Windows Firewall off and it should see that Zonealarm is there and be OK with it in Security Center.
SP2 will be downloaded without choice on the 12th. I'd recommend downloading the full version of it from Microsoft, from the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
If you do the piecemeal install through Windows Update and it craps out in the middle during the DL, you'll be SOL, same for it crapping out in the middle of the install. If you download the file from the above link (278MB, so broadband only) and do the install from that fullfile, it's alot less likely to cause a problem, since it has all the updated files, not just the files it see during the Automatic Updates portion of the install.
