View Full Version : I enjoy awful games.

I don't know what it is.. maybe it's my becoming a bit older and more discerning gamer.. but the usual, common, everyday game is not appealing to me anymore. I mean how many GTAs, Halos, Super Marios, Gran Turismos, Splinter Cells, Tekkens, Nba Lives, and Final Fantasys can I play before I lose total interest in gaming?
The funny thing is.. while none of these games really appeal to me anymore, I find myself enjoying games that the industry professionals have coined as "irrefutable excuses for excrement." There's something intrinsically rewarding in playing a "bad" game and discovering the true design intent of the original programmer, or revealing a truly unique and enjoyable game sequence in an otherwise nondescript game experience.
Does anyone else find themself in a similar circumstance to me? Or am I relegated to browse through the trash bin o' games all by myself?
Examples (until I can get home and actually post some more):
DC:
Omikron
Blue Stinger
Carrier
Maken X
Silver
PS2:
Disaster Report
Hidden Invasion
X Squad
Eternal Ring
Haven
Xbox:
The Hobbit
Knight's Apprentice
Nightcaster
Future Tactics
Enclave

I'd be curious to see what games you are referring to, but I will agree that as I get older and have less time, I almost exclusively buy and play the more unusual games. Though I am guilty of being an RPG fanatic even though I know they are all essentially the same.

Its people like you that make videogame makers make bad games because you will continue to buy them. This is why you and me could never be best friends.

I'm in the boat with you my brother. I have played, and own, a lot of videogames and I truly enjoy many of the games the "experts" deem unacceptable. Here is a list of some games I own that fit the bill:
Armorines
Chopper Attack
Kabuki Warriors
Kung Fu Chaos
Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter
Medal of Honor Rising Sun
Quantum Redshift
Serious Sam
Terminator 3
Terminator Dawn of Fate
Toxic Grind
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
TUROK EVOLUTION (I loved this game. Everyone is trippin')
XGRA
Airblade
Fugitive Hunter
Haven
Invasion From Beyond (excellent PSOne game)
One
Die Hard Vendetta (another awesome game)
Smashing Drive
and the most underrated game of all:
Sonic Adventure 2
just to name a few

I will post a list of games when I get home tonight.. I need a visual aid.
But in response to you Zewone.. believe me I dont spend $50 on these games. Most have been purchased in true CAG fashion, ie, for less than $5.
Can we still be friends??? heh.

I actually like games that are considered average or slightly below average - something like Metropolismania or the ChoroQ series. They usually have more charm and quirkiness than the mainstream hit titles.

I really enjoyed Roadkill which was deemed crap just about everyone. I think it got such a trashing because it overused violence and language, so it seemed like it was using it just to sell. But I enjoyed the car combat/exploration. Of course I am a sucker for games like this, I loved exploring the levels of Twisted Metal 2 back in the day.

73% rating at GR (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/914635.asp?q=roadkill)
It wasn't really called crap by anyone, though it was largely ignored by most people. I enjoyed it, too. It was fun to explore the levels, experiencing the varying weather, and just causing chaos. Plus, I got it for $5 at CC, so I didn't have any reason to not enjoy it.

I find i only get hooked on bad games with a good replay value, like dynasty warriors 3(which some hate, due to repititiveness but i love it) if a game has no (good)multiplayer, or replay value, the i wont buy it if its under a 9.0 rating on Gamespot

I was with you until the second paragraph. I am the exact opposite. I only want to play AAA games because I don't have time anymore to play everything. If you have to try and figure out what a designer was trying to accomplish it's not a hidden gem - it just sucks.

Naw, i dont go for gems, but i like games like resident evil, with different game modes, and timesplitters 2, where the higher the difficulty level, the more board you get to play, like Halo, great single player, then knock up the difficulty level, make it split screen, goof around, youll think you were playing another game

I really enjoyed "Largo Winch" on PS2, which might be called an average game at best. It reminded me of the old Tex Murphy graphic adventure games on the PC. Plus it had a really cool computer hacking minigame.

I find myself agreeing with Gamespot more than the other game websites. They are tougher with their reviews in my opinion.
By the way, I did like ET for the Atari 2600. The game that really sucked was Pac Man for the Atari 2600; That one should of been trashed.

I'm in the minimal time boat. Though, I'll play anything, the gems and the not so well reviewed games.
Really, what you'll notice about most games that aren't complete crap or rated great, is that most games have a nice range of values (look at a game like XIII, which has gotten a range from 100% on gamerankings to the 60's (I pick this game only because I got it for $3, so I was looking at reviews)).
So, some people enjoy any game. I think people don't give some games a chance just because of reviews. If a game sounds interesting, I'll give it a chance.

Blue Stinger is one of the best DC games. It probably comes in 3rd, behind Sword of the Berserk and Shenmue ;)
I usually end up with the highly rated games but sometimes I just buy games on what I like. I think some people may enjoy a game more for certain reasons. Here is a good example.

I loved this game. When the reviewers complain about using your light saber to deflect blasts I'm going wow that was sweet! Then they complain about the graphics. Graphics don't mean anything. I thought the controls were pretty good...they had there moments but nothing horrific by any stretch. You can't always listen to reviews.
