View Full Version : Thompson Drive Tearing Up Discs?

I've had my copy of Halo 2 in my Thompson drive (I think, anyway) Xbox almost constantly since January, except for a couple games of Phantom Dust and Crimson Skies. What is really worrying me, though, is that every time I take it out, it seems that the Xbox has completely torn up the top of my disc. I'm talking some pretty deep cuts. Not deep enough to get to the data layer, but it looks nasty. Has anybody else experienced this with other games, or Halo 2? I bought the Xbox with ALL of my b-day money, and I don't want it to tear up every new game I buy.

I let my cousin borrow KOTOR.. he played it for a week or two, then gave it back.. his Thompson drive ate the hell outta my disc :(

Regardless of the drive, you shouldn't leave games in while the system is off.

Can I ask why?

I'd like to know too; I almost always leave my disks in when I turn the system off.

Because it says so in the manual? I'll leave a more technical explanation to someone like epobirs, but from what I understand the mechanisms that hold and release the disc and lens aren't returned to their home position and the disc isn't halted before the power shuts down, so there's potential for damage.

Yes, always take the game out of the console when you're done. Whenever I leave mine in for like a day, it's always grungy and gets some scratches.

Yes they are. I thought, "Hey my music taste deserves to be on display." And the rest was history.

I've never had anything like that happen with my thompson and I leave my games in all the time.

I've never had an issue leaving the disc in the system. I think they say that so you can put more wear and tear on the disc thereby having to buy a new copy once it wears out.
