Rather than waiting for the press to get the story out Microsoft is going direct to the public by running a half-hour ad on MTV May 12th. To be hosted by Lord of the Rings and Sin City actor Elijah Wood with a variety of other celebs turning up, this should be a must-record item for gamers.

I thought it was ok, but it could have used some major improvments if they did a second season. Did they ever do a second season?
Go ahead and post a pic of your collection if you want. I love seeing pictures of big collections of pretty much anything.

only one season. I chose to wait for the DVD of it rather than waste time with MTV (the dvd came in two disturbing formats, one that was a 2 dvd set featuring the ENTIRE 12 episode season for like 20-25 bucks and then they decided to re release it as 3 dvds at 20 bucks each just in time to milk people onthe second movie's hype.)

I watch some of there reality shows like wild boys and Jessica Simpson, but besides that I never watch it. However I'm just glad were going to finally get to see the thing. I'm sure the gaming press is freaking ticked off about this though. They like to use these things as a way to sell lots of mags and get lots of traffic. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into party central but I'm sure it will. I'd be happy if we could get a clean look at the system and whats inside in terms of hard drive and what not. I'd also love to see a couple second of Perfect Darck 0. Can you imagine HL2 graphics on all Xbox2 games!!!! I'm hoping for a wireless controller but one that still has rumble functions and mic support. Even if it does turn into party central at least E3 is only 4 days away and were sure to be getting lots of info on Xbox2 and evreything else.

The Mtv audience is pretty much the target demographic for the Xbox 360. It makes perfect sense - this way they reach the most amount of console gamers.

It would hardly be the first time MTV ran an infomercial during primetime. The channel was essentially founded as a 24 hour advertising outlet for the music industry and expanded from there.

There will probably be only ten minutes of real useful information and demos. One band performance is scheduled and they'll feel obligated to trot out all of their B-list celebrities to say something inane for the camera. with luck the commercials might be for game publishers promoting their support.

I did network support at a party Sony threw a couple years ago to push their online play. It was actually two parties, one at this rented mansion in Beverly Hills and another in New York, each with a bunch of B-listers on hand. Each camera operator and interviewer must have spent over an hour talking to know-nothing celebs for each minute of video that could actually be broadcast without embarrassment. The best part of the whole thing (besides the payment) was that a little 19-year old starlet from some Dawson's Creek knockoff was wiping people out left and right in competitive play.

Here is an article about the unveiling of the 360:
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1499911/20050411/story.jhtml

Attention, die-hard gamers: Peel the controllers off your hands, step away from "Halo 2" and mark May 12 on your calendars, because that's when all the top-secret details of the next-generation Xbox will be unleashed.

Microsoft will team up with MTV to unveil the new video game console with a 30-minute TV special hosted by "Lord of the Rings" star (and confessed Xbox enthusiast) Elijah Wood. The show will also feature performances from the Killers, backstage interviews with athletes and celebrities, a sneak peek into the future of the online service Xbox Live, and exclusive insider footage on the making of the new game console.

Although Microsoft wouldn't confirm any details surrounding the new system, rumors circulating on the Internet have been rampant — everything from an optional hard drive to a new white color scheme.

Kathy Vrabeck, president of Activision Publishing, has said the next-generation Xbox will allow gamers unprecedented ability to customize their gaming experience, and Microsoft Corporate VP J. Allard revealed last month that an Xbox "guide" will serve as an entertainment gateway for players to instantly connect to their games and other players. A customizable play list will allow players to tailor their own music tracks to the games they play.

More than 200 titles will be developed for the new platform this year, Microsoft said. The company has sold more than 20 million Xboxes worldwide since its 2001 launch.

The MTV special will premiere in North America on May 12 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, and then globally on May 13.

MTV also had a party for the unveiling of the 360 here is the article:
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1501415/20050506/omarion.jhtml

Avalon theater on Thursday night it was encouraged.

Omarion, Wilmer Valderrama and Linkin Park's Joe Hahn were among the
celebrities facing off in a first-person shooter as their friends downed free drinks around them.

(Check out photos from the party.)

"Joe just kills it," Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda boasted of his bandmate.

Thursday's party was held to celebrate the launch of the highly anticipated new Xbox. The console was revealed to dozens of celebrities and VIPs at the event, which was taped for the global revealing scheduled to air on MTV next week (see "New Xbox To Be Unveiled By Elijah Wood, Serenaded By Killers").

"I've been gaming for a while," Omarion said before picking up the new controller. "We've got the double TVs with 'Halo 2.' "

Ryan Cabrera tried out the new system, but he mainly came to check out the entertainment. Wearing a bright pink jacket, singer Brandon Flowers and the Killers kicked off the party with a short hits set that included "Somebody Told Me," "All These Things That I've Done," "Mr. Brightside" and "Smile Like You Mean It."

"I love the Killers," said Cabrera, who sported a "Vote for Pedro" pin on his sport coat. (Coincidentally, Efren Ramirez, who plays Pedro in "Napoleon Dynamite," was in the other room.) "It's fun music you can be an idiot and dance around to. Hooky songs you can sing along to."

Ashlee, Elijah, Wilmer And More At The Next Generation Xbox Revealed Launch Party

As the Killers began playing, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal and skateboarder Tony Hawk grabbed their dates and rushed toward the stage. Elijah Wood, who hosted the event, caught the show from a private balcony, while Tenacious D's Kyle Gass sang along from nearby the stage.

As for Cabrera, he also stuck around for the second band, England's Snow Patrol, for which he was joined by girlfriend Ashlee Simpson, sporting a strawberry blond wig.

Speaking of wigs, "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" actress Bai Ling sported a curly blond hairpiece, although it was her very revealing dress that had passersby in the VIP area doing double takes.

Ling, who had to ask a man next to her who Snow Patrol were, mingled with Scarlett Johansson, while Alyssa Milano and Rachel Bilson took over booths with their entourages.

Meanwhile, near the open bar, Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland and producer Ross Robinson admired the new Xbox graphics, while Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille admired the bartender, pleading with her to call him later.

Just before the party came to an end, Lil Jon showed up, pimp cup in hand, on a mission: "I want some free games!"

I'd expect a torrent to appear for it within minutes of its complete broadcast. There are some guys out there who consider it an accomplishment to be first to post a freshly broadcast TV show, especially if it is edited to remove commercials, although the commercials for this might actually be keeper if they're tied to the Xbox theme.

Same here - MTV has changed so much from its first day back in 1981. I remember watching the same 6 videos over and over again.

Then came Friday Night Fights (w/ videos) - I think Ray Parker's "Ghostbusters" won like five weeks in a row. :D

News of Xbox 360 being updated and underpowered (when compared with PS3 and Revolution) has already surfaced from a number of developers, so at this point Microsoft had to build consumer interest through hype any way they can.

Exactly, this will be my first time, and first for a great many others, watching MTV, since Popular Videos People Prefer. They might be a little more in tuned to tech stuff after this, who knows maybe they can make a cool preview show that not even G4 can afford.

It sounds good now because it will be the first out and the most powerful until something better comes along. Reasons it could fail could be anything: lack of AAA games, inferior specs compared to competitors, high price point, etc. The xbox (besides Halo) doesn't really have any killer apps associated with it (that can't be played on anothr console). If the same games are going to appear on the PS3 or Revolution but look, play and sound better, that's not good for Microsoft. Also, Nintendo has a loyal fanbase (albeit shrinking) so all they have to do to move a few systems is release the next Mario, Zelda, SSB, or whatever. The PS3, on top of being more powerful, will most likely have the largest library of games and they are building a nice catalog of must haves with the Jak, Sly, Ratchet, God of War, Gran Turismo and GTA franchises among others. I also don't think developers are close to maxing out the xbox so everything seems a bit premature - I'm thinking the 360 is going to end up more like the xbox 1.5 than 2.0... Only time will tell...

Yep, playing KOTOR on my PS2 has been a blast.

People should take Sony's hype with a grain of salt. I've yet to see quantifiable evidence of any big advantage for PS3. There is virtually nothing in term of any real specification for the system other than a still vaguely defined Cell and a video solution from Nvidia. None of the developers offering comment seem to be able to claim observation of final or near final hardware in operation. This video chip is not, by Nvidia's statements, going to be a PC style GPU. Most of the heavy lifting is to be done by the Cell. The PS3 processor will be fairly simple, similar to the GS in the PS2.

Sony has successfully overhyped performance claims before and it seems likely they're doing so again.

You base your judgement of the PS2 on a decent 4-wheeler game? Take a look at God of War, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Gran Turismo 4 for a little better representation of what the system is capable of, which it seems isn't the limit of what the systm can do. And basing the PS3's capabilities on the PS2 is also stupid.

I think you're missing the point. A previous poster dismissed the Xbox as Halo and nothing more, and then assumed the Xbox 360 would be as readily dismissed. This would be no different from dismissing the entire PS2 library if the Metal Gear series didn't suit your taste. You have to wonder how much first hand experience that first poster has of the Xbox.

And it would appear GT4 is the limit of what the PS2 can do, considering they had to drop online support for lack of remaining resources after everything else was in place. God of War is very good but you know people would be less impressed if an identical version appeared on the competing systems. There would be far less of a, "Wow, they really sweated blood over this one" element on those machines. Look at how much advance scrutiny RE4 for PS2 has been subjected to on the expectation it wil have to lose much of the quality seen on the GameCube. But would it be fair to write off the system because other have greater strengths or must it be judged on its own merits, particularly in deliver content not available elsewhere in the console world.

Besides the usual suspects and already entrenched franchises (Halo, Project Gotham, Mechassault, Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, KOTOR, Fable, Jade Empire/Bioware), Xbox 2 is getting 2 exclusive RPG's from Hironobu Sakaguchi (Mistwalker), one of which is Blue Dragon, and exclusive games from Yoshiki Okamoto (Game Republic) and Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Q Entertainment).

Tell me again how the Xbox has no games? And that the Xbox 2 won't either? Please. Try and wait until the launch titles are announced before you say theres nothing good. And take a look at Sony's last 2 rounds of launch titles... Not very impressive either.

Hironobu Sakaguchi + Akira Toriyama working together = Killer App. What was that last game they made together? Oh yeah, Chrono Trigger.

Perfect Dark Zero = potential Killer App. Here's some info.

Yeah, it's a very questionable statement which doesn't help their overall messages.

GT4 being the limit of the PS2 wouldn't surprise me, though it's likely that it's at least close. It also wouldn't surprise me that there could be something to surpass it.

Yep, playing KOTOR on my PS2 has been a blast.

Playing it on PC was just fine though, wasn't it? Seriously, I think javeryh has a point. I really don't see many Xbox franchises that "sell the system" besides Halo - which is just a standard FPS done on a console (oh, wait, you can play Halo on PC as well).

There are very few Xbox games that are worth getting an Xbox for that you can't play on PC or another system. Furthermore, there are even fewer unique games. If it isn't a racing game or an FPS/3rdPS, it's not on Xbox.

I know that's an exaggeration but when I look at the PS2 I see games across the entire spectrum (rhythm/music, platformer, RPG, SRPG, Sim...). I could really care less if the PS3 specs aren't up to the Xbox 360s. It's the games, people.

I really hope that MSoft steps it with the 360 and lines up some quality games from a variety of genres.

Go about 3 posts up... The myth of Xbox "not having any games" is getting really old. The only thing Xbox is seriously lacking is Japanese RPG's, and thats been addressed. Xbox's lineup has strengths and weaknesses just like PS2's, PS2 has a bigger lineup, but its also been out longer.

I think the new influx of Japanese support bodes well for 360. It doesn't need to do great in Japan, just good enough for developers to support it this time around, and I think the Japanese lineup of games for it is already enough to sell the system, with Blue Dragon, Ninja Gaiden Black, Dead or Alive 4, and the other coming titles. A close 3rd would be great for them.

Playing it on PC was just fine though, wasn't it? .

No, it wasn't.

Besides PC games being buggy as crap, most of us would rather drop the $200 on an Xbox and a game than $200 on a video card that's going to need to be upgraded in 3 months.

I really don't see many Xbox franchises that "sell the system" besides Halo

Maybe not, but the Xbox Live service sells systems, and that's the same basic thing as a franchise.

There are very few Xbox games that are worth getting an Xbox for that you can't play on PC or another system.

But if you have no systems, Xbox is the way to go, because its a proven fact that every single multi-platform game plays best on the Xbox. There's no arguing that.

I know that's an exaggeration but when I look at the PS2 I see games across the entire spectrum (rhythm/music, platformer, RPG, SRPG, Sim...).

Here's some games that have sold well recently. Madden. Halo 2. GTA : SA. Resident Evil 4. God of War. KOTOR. I see no rhythm/music or sim games there.

You're right that PS2 has more variety, but the variety it offers appeals to such a small group of gamers that it doesn't matter in the long run. Most people simply don't care about rhythm/music games or sim games.

Are those Tecmo games, specifically DOA4, confirmed for the next Xbox? All I've seen from Itagaki has been pretty vague.

More than 200 titles will be developed for the new platform this year, Microsoft said. The company has sold more than 20 million Xboxes worldwide since its 2001 launch.

I don't want to know how many games are being developed this year. I want to know how many game will be released this year! These 200 games in development could potentially take another year or more before they are actually released. I'm curious to find out exactly how many games they will have finished and ready for this year's launch.

I hope they actually talk about the system instead of doing stupid skits, and have the killers parade around weilding communicators and controllers. This better be 30 minutes of pure tech stuff, for the tech nerd, not the casual gamer. This wont happen, but one can hope :)

I think there is plenty to argue with that. If by "playing the best" means it has the best graphics, I'd agree. If it means actual gameplay, I'd argue that the PS2 version of games like SSX, Tony Hawk, and NBA Street (or any game which uses shoulder buttons) play much better on the PS2 since the controller is better suited for this type of game. How a game "plays" is so subjective it shouldn't even be allowed as an argument.

I forgot that a game has to be a best seller to be good http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif. For people who look at both "popular" games and niche titles, I think we know which system would be better suited for them.

In addition to the genres I listed, I should have included platformers, another genre the Xbox is sorely lacking.

I guess Phantom Dust, Dai Senryaku, and Scrapland aren't niche enough. Steel Battalion isn't unique or niche?

Platformers... Gunvalkryie, Blinx 1+2, the forthcoming Conker game, and all the multiconsole platformers. I don't think PS2 has a ton more exclusive platformers that are any good, but both consoles have strengths and weaknesses in their lineups.

The platformers you listed are pretty pathetic. Sony has the best exclusive platformers going right now (R&C, Jak, and Sly Cooper).

Anyway, I seriously didn't come into this thread to start a flame war or anything like that. I was merely trying to explain that I don't see many franchises for the 360 to bank on that you can't play on another system or on a PC.

I want the 360 to do well. More systems = more games to play. My last statement seems to have been ignored.

Which Halo is driving sales? Halo 2. And why do people want to play Halo 2? Xbox Live play. If you ask an educated gamer WHY he wants an Xbox now, he'll probably say "for the online play". And it was 1 million subscribers before Halo 2 hit, I'm sure its much more now.

I thought Gunvalkyrie was ok, but yeah, platformers are not Xbox's strong point (is JSRF technically a platformer? I thought that was a nice game, real old though). And PS2 is definitely the system to go with if you want quirky games. But, I have to disagree with the last point, there are plenty of franchises on 360 that should be good. Whether they are or not remains to be seen, but I'm very optimistic about Japanese support for the 360, especially about what Blue Dragon will do for the system.

Also, MS doesn't see the PC as competition, for two reasons. One is that its a different market segment, PC gamers and console gamers are two different groups (though I do both and own Xbox and PS2). And the other is that they're both technically MS platforms.

I agree about your points on the PC but maybe Microsoft should view them as competition. I know plenty of people who are PC gamers but not Xbox owners and their argument against the Xbox is that all of the good games will come to PC or originated on the PC in the first place. I know porting them to PC is just more money in Msoft's pocket, but it is also prohibiting Xbox sales to some degree.

Yep, as of January 2005, Xbox Live had 1.4 million subscribers. Compare that to 6.4 million copies of Halo 2 sold (same time frame). Now there is no way to tell how many people who bought Halo 2 were already on Live, but a 400,000 member bump after 6.4 million in sales doesn't exactly sound like a lot to me.

The fact that Live is broadband only (which excludes many people - especially younger gamers) and requires a yearly fee, means that a small percentage of gamers are actually using the Live service.

I actually think that Live is the best of the online offerings out there. I just don't think it is selling Xboxes to most gamers. With the new Live options that are rumored for the 360, I think that will change. Once you are able to play on Live for free on the weekends, I think a lot of people will get a taste for it and pay the yearly fee for the full service.

I saw that show last night. Xplay basically just shows off some previews.
Most notably was some footage of S.t.a.l.k.e.r. which looks pretty impressive.

They also show a few other minor games and fill time with one of their dumb ass comedy skits. At the end of the show they play footage from HL 2 for the xbox.

It's cool to see some of the trailers but their isn't really any remarkable info passed on.

I know porting them to PC is just more money in Msoft's pocket, but it is also prohibiting Xbox sales to some degree.

You could say the same about third party releases on any console. PC owners can bide their time and play the GTA in improved form, for example. Likewise for Metal Gear titles and numerous other titles that had their first life on consoles. OTOH, unless you have extremely narrow tastes, a large number of good Xbox games have not had a PC incarnation.

On the same note, many of those who prefer consoles forego having a gaming oriented PC because they greatly prefer the simplicity of playing a console version. I strongly believe Microsoft missed a major opportunity by actively discouraging most PC ports. With their insistence on not supporting mouse and keyboard use to keep the machine firmly within the console sphere they gave up the chance of drawing a lot of royalties from publishers catering to gamers with a console preference.

For most purposes the PC and console markets are separate. The PC game market is much smaller and the subset of gamers who are active on consoloes and PC smaller still. The Xbox game sales lost to the PC realm are a tiny concern compared to the challenge of the PS2 base when it comes to convincing developers they should produce an Xbox version also or even exclusively. If MS should change their keyboard and mouse policy in the next generation it may draw away a small number of PC gamers seeking greater convenience but no great exodus, much like Apple's switch campaign that cost more than it reaped in actual switchers. The real value is making the console more attractive to developers of PC games that are ill suited to having their control scheme altered to use a console style controller. Since they are trying to establish a unified standard for game controllers across both Xbox and PC which has long been needed to encourage more games of certain types on the PC, it would be equally good to do the Xbox the same favor by having SDK support for the USB dongle that connects the existing MS wireless mouse and keyboard sets.

I wonder how they're going to address backwards compatability. Obvious if it is, they'll come right out and say it. But if it isn't, i highly doubt they'll say like "Oh yeah, and we're sorry to inform you, but the Xbox 360 will NOT be backwards compatable." I'm betting that if it's not, then they just won't say anything at all. Needless to say, if it isn't mentioned tonight, then it ain't happening.

It was very cool to see Perfect Dark Zero Multiplayer (50 players? )
Plus, they used a little bit of Godzilla music during the Perfect Dark Zero part, which was really cool (when they met with one of the developers outside, and then they played the same part of the song over and over again).
Other then that the show was pretty bad.

Feh. I knew what to expect going into that MTV show because...it's MTV. ADD-edited mishmash of 2 second clips while some crappy rap-rock band blares in the background and celebrities that you don't care about talk about how awesome the system will be. So in that respect, it wasn't disappointing since it was exactly what I knew it would be.

Still, what little was shown ranged from "that doesn't look any better than what we have now" (Tiger Woods 06, Tony Hawk) to "that's a little better, I guess" (Project Gotham 3, Perfect Dark Zero, Madden) to "OH MY GOD" (Need For Speed). By the time the system comes out I'm sure all of the above will be more impressive though, so there's no reason to pass final judgement at the moment.

What DOES annoy me about the MTV show is that they didn't even mention a lot of the appealing aspects of the system...all they did was talk about the wireless controllers and the capability to buy stuff for your in-game characters online (bah).

Oh well. Regardless, so far, so good.

All that did was tell me what I already know.

The "special" was geared towards those "urban", "grown up" console gamers that are too busy blinging out to look at the internet.

Perfect Dark Zero = Franchise
Madden '06 = Mega Franchise
Tiger Woods '06 = Franchise
Need For Speed: Most Wanted = Mega Franchise
Tony Hawk: American Wasteland = Mega Franchise

5 for 5 so far.

When are these companies going to begin making original games? I've been playing games since 1985, and these companies are making these games over and over because the most common type of person who will play games these days are teenagers on the younger end of the "teen" spectrum, they weren't even alive when some of these franchises began (Madden).

MTV completely cheesed this up. They show some slut showing the console for 5 seconds, then they have some cheesy emo band, followed by a slew of commercials, then Sway, the guy that knows nothing about everything comes in and tries to act gangta to these software engineers. Then MTV works in a free advertisement for Pimp my Ride by having these fools mod a damn Xbox, like it's a new concept.

I'm witnessing the wrong gaming revolution.

I wouldnt say "peaked". It does look better, but not the difference between the Ps1 and Ps2 eras.

My programming friend had a wonderful observation on this. Gameplay is now becoming similar to the cutscenes we are used to. Remember how back in the day commercials and print ads used mostly cinemas, not actual gameplay? Now we are coming up on a generation where gameplay will be like those cinemas. We are used to it so it doesnt floor us like the first 3D game or GCI cutscene

What's up with the mechs in Quake 4?

The Pimp My Xbox segment was weak. They could have fabricated their own custom case and done a lot more with it. I was expecting something that would at least rival the Half-Life and Doom 3 case mods.

And they made Matt Leto look like a freak. Who cares how many polygons are in the models? Knowing that won't help his game.

And it does sound like the Xbox 360 has a case of sequelitis. But this all fits into Microsoft's master plan for console domination. They've stated they want to come out on top this round and they're doing everything within the almighty dollar and the law to do it. They're courting the mainstream market. That's why it was on MTV. That's why familiar names are showing up at launch. That's why they're including the Xbox Live marketplace (women love to shop, am I right?). That's why J Allard dresses like a hustler. Well, maybe not that one, but you see my point.

IR receivers are extremely cheap as are IR remotes. Plus an IR remote is not going to interfere with a machine that will in many cases already have two radios going: one for the controllers and the optional WiFi plug-in.

The reason Perfect Dark looks like crap is because it was developed for the XBox then ported to the 360. Take a look at some of the other games they showed.. Ghost Recon 3 looked amazing.

The fact of the matter is that pictures of the 360 were not supposed to be leaked out. Had they not been leaked out and this was the first view in the world, everyone would be talking about the system, not how much MTV sucks.

I'm sure Im probably reiterating some people's points here, but since I just got done watching the special...

I dont know what people expected out of this special, particularly because after all, it was MTV. And its not E3. All MS wanted to do was create some chatter. It was splashed on the front pages of MSNBC, and maybe the other major news sites as well. They're not gonna tell all, mainly because the casual gamer doesnt get it (specs and whatnot), and also because if MS dropped too many bombs, they wouldnt have anything to say at E3. If anything, this was a teaser. If it turns out that MS has nothing else to say at E3, thats when it becomes a disappointment.

As for what I saw, I liked it, but not to the point that ill buy at launch. Im pretty disappointed that the DVR rumor was false, but to be honest, tacking DVR to this thing might send the price upwards of 500 bucks. Once E3 comes around, Ill have a better idea, depending on what Sony and Nintendo show.

:applause:

everyone is going to bash you, but what kept the Xbox alive for the first few years of this generation? Hype and fanboys. MS is great at using this as a marketing tool. The system now has some really good games, but the majority of them came out last year and the first six months of this year.

and I probably won't get one after this until I see a price drop. I probably would have bit had their been some quality games, but a sequel to a FPS I hate, and a bunch of PC and EA games don't do shit for me. The lack of Battlefield as a launch title is really the nail in the coffin as far as getting it at launch

It was a extended ad. Get over it. It was almost exactly as I warned.

Meanwhile there is a lot of good info on the web. For instance, if you have a MP3 player that doubles as a USB storage device, it can be plugged into the console to supply your custom soundtrack in a game or stream across the network from your PC. For just listening they have visualizer from Jeff Minter, who is legendary for his work in this area. (The single best reason to own the Jaguar CD.)

It's nice what you can do with software once a certain minimal set of hardware features is provided.

As much as this show sucked, let's keep and mind that it was geared towards casual gamers who probably have no idea what E3 is, not people like us who follow the industry daily.

I agree though that the game clips were pretty meh, but these games still have roughly six more months of development. Also, we weren't seeing them in high-def. There' s still a lot of potential to see what it can do so I won't write off the system just yet.

I disagree. There were some things I learned that I felt were cool (faceplates, games coming out, etc) but it didnt stop me from thinking "suck fest". Learning the shape, a few features, and some other light info would only carry the chatter so far. We'd all bitch until E3 and the really hardcore of us will bitch after ;)

The people on that show were not gamers. How can I tell? An Asian lost to other human beings at an FPS.

This, my friends, is a paradox.

One thing I will say is that I think the 360 will be the beginning of mass commercialization in gaming with this "Live Marketplace" concept. Now instead of just seeing billboards and product placement in games, we'll be reminded that we can purchase the new Nike Air Jordans for use with our NBA Street characters.

The same way that advertisements slowly made their way onto TiVos, we'll be seeing the same thing with the 360 (and probably the PS3 as well).

The show was as expected, mostly hype. I expect pretty much a replay of the Xbox's first year . . . a little flash but not much substance. If Sony can get out a more powerful system within a year, they can remain in the driver's seat.

I hate to say it, because I have a soft spot for Nintendo, but Sony really knows how to cultivate games and that will make the difference.

The amazing part (at this point) is the enormous waste of cash that MS made in buying Rare.

That program was so horrible. I'm seriously about to do what most stupid people do right now, sue both MS and MTV for making me watch that horrible show. Seriously, I went through tons of pain and sufferring watching that show. I'll admit, I was hyped for the show, but it was horrible. I thought the show would be a huge blow for Sony, but I guess it's a huge boost for them and Nintendo.

Oh well, I still want an Xbox 360. Hopefully E3 makes me forget that show. Worst 30 minutes I ever wasted.

That's exactly the case . . . Nintendo saw that Rare was going nowhere.

I hope Rare can recover (I still want to play the new Conker) but it will be a miracle if they do.

the live marketplace is the shitties thing ever. Whoever buys clothes for their character in the game to wear is an asshat and should have their balls removed.

Soon the load scenes will turn into commercials which will be bought by clothing companies and such, advertising the clothes that you can buy to use on your character.

Sweet my character is now wearing air jordans! i'll be the envy of all of the online kids now! I'll be beating the online nerd girls back with a stick once they see that my online car is riding on 22 inch rims.

Having trouble picking up chicks? Just let them bitches know that your online NBA character has some sick virtual bling which you bought with real money. They'll be all over you before you can say pocket-protector.

All I have to say is that damn show made me not want to buy the console... I had already started saving, and after the show I felt like getting the money and buy some DVDs and some games... Hopefully they'll make me change my opinion during E3... At least thanks to my DVR I did not have to watch the comercials...

The problem is those casuals aren't going to be first in line to buy the system. The problem is those casuals have eyes that can see a minimal difference between what was shown and what they already have. The problem is those casuals won't get excited about half the stuff they showed (like online tournaments etc)

IMO the show pissed of the hardcore gamers and didn't show the casuals any compelling reason to drop 300 bones. I am sure MS can overcome this but no way around it, it was bad.

What a letdown. I knew it was going to be a half hour commercial but it was really bad. Perfect Dark Zero was unimpressive to say the least.

I guess I have a different view of the casual gamers/ mass market. I think if you tell them to buy something essentially they will. This show was to hype the 'next big thing'. Get a handful of celebrities, try to make your product 'cool' and hype it to hell. These are people who follow trends like lemmings. Hype sells them. The general mtv viewer has no fucking mind.

I do agree with you though that this show was detrimental to hardcore gamers.

Geez...whoever produced that show needs to get out of television. I learned more about The Killers than I did the Xbox 360. 30 minutes and all we get is seconds of game footage (which wasn't that impressive)! No mention of the hard drive accessory or whether it would play Xbox games. Hell, they didn't even show the controller!

Well, it just ended at my house... one of these days, I will learn that mainstream game related TV sucks @$$ and remember not to get excited... I read a 5-paragraph article this morning with more info. Umm... I know it looks like the unholy love child of my hard drive and a half-used bar of soap now... yay?

And guys, promise me something- if I ever say 'represent the female gamers!' and mean it- ban my ass. I hated her. (Then again, my laothing may be overblown from lousy ADD camera shots and repeating commericals. WTF?)

............................You are a fucking dumbass. It doesnt come out for months. These are just tech demos of the games. They are not finished. You cant judge anything until its out or finished at least. You are a gigantic turd...

I totally disagree with your comment. We ALL have the right to judge these unfiinished products because Microsoft felt confident enough with them to premiere them to the world. Had somebody stolen footage that was not meant to be released, than that would be a different story. As it is, MS chose the footage and hyped it up to no end. So if they didn't deliver, than we all have the perfect right to say so and judge the footage.

I dunno bout anyone else, but does anyone else feel that the footage they showed for most games wasnt gameplay footage but alot of movie/demo footage like most commercials show for a game. I had to ask that question after seeing the Perfect Dark footage and being underwhelmed. Also, I dunno how they did this show but it seems like they asked people to show up to a Killers show and then told them they'd be on MTV for the XBox 360.
