I'm planning on picking this up soon and just wondering what CAG's impressions of this are of gameplay, graphics, etc. Ign.com just gave it a 9.2. I don't really like racing games, but for some reason I love Midnight Club.

I'm planning on buying this game myself, but am curious to hear if it's any good online. From what I read on IGN's review it seems to have promise and alot of cool online stuff that you can do. Just waiting for some one or multiple replys on how good the game is.

I just picked it up...played around with the Career mode a little bit. You can customize just about anything on your car. I haven't really done much though, played about 4 races. You have to unlock the other cities (which sucks, since I want to race in Detroit....San Diego is the first)
Didn't go online...looked at the options though, seemed to be some promise. The one good thing it seems, when you unlock cars, you can use them online...even if you didn't buy them yet....
Game seems promising, the gameplay is good, controls are good....kinda Burnout 3ish, but not as fast (unless you hit Nitrous)
I think I may have to customize some rides and go online with them :)

well..i played it for like 20 mins so far (mostly looking at menu options and changing them to my liking), but i did do 2 races...i got the Eclipse and tuned it up just a tad and got to racing...easy races at the beginning like IGN said, but the city is huge...also stated by IGN, since the city is so big, the details aren't as good as they would be if it was a track racer, but the speed when using boosts is AWESOME :D
haven't checked out online mode yet, but i'm sure it will be great...clans, ctf, tag? AWESOME :)

Ok, just to clear the record, I don't know when I'm getting the game. Ozz apparently REALLY wants me to lead it, but I only have 25 bucks at the moment. If Ozz or somebody else really wants to be Overlord or whatever, and then hand the reigns over to me (or just stay leader after I get it), that's all good. I doubt you guys want to roam around online clanless for long, and I don't want to hold everybody up.
Midnight Club 2 was an excellent, challenging racer with a great sense of speed, so I'll definitely buy this one, but probably in a few months when it drops to $20

How are the cities? Does driving around and looking for cities get as monotonous as in NFSU2?

The important question for me, the guy who owns none of the 3: What's better- MC3: Dub Edition, Need For Speed Underground 2, or Burnout 3?
swetooth9
04-13-2005, 07:57 AM
mc 3 and bo3 are better than nfsu 2 by a long shot IMO...
it's just preference b/t mc 3 and bo3
i think mc 3 has the better online play and music and customization/open city..and bo3 has the better sense of speed, graphics, etc.

Yeah, NFSU2 just plain sucks compared to MC3 or BO3.
Midnight Club is almost like the best of both NFS and Burnout.
It has an open city, fast speeds, a lot of tuner options and customization. You can have a CUSTOM soundtrack also, but I could not get them to work together....it was either custom or the in-game. Although I only played around with it for a few minutes.
The game is pretty good....I still have to play it a bit more to really learn.

Beware of the custom soundtrack! Apparently there is a bug in the game that you will get a Dirty Disc Error as soon as you cross the finish line in a race if you use certain custom soundtracks you may have. This doesn't affect ALL custom soundtracks you may have, but so far the reason behind the glitch hasn't been determined. I have two seperate custom soundtracks on my xbox, one which works great and the other which crashes the game like I mentioned above. EVERY TIME. A lot of other people have been running into this problem. If the game does it to you, switch to a different custom soundtrack.
Otherwise, this is a great game.

Hmmm, thanks....no big deal on the soundtracks...I think I have all mine grouped as one.
Thanks for the head's up though...seems like a lot of games crash with custom soundtracks *coughESPNcough*

i've heard that, but it hasn't happened to me personally...i would think R* will come out with a patch for that since it supports DC

yeah i guess ill take dem reigns till you can get yourself a copy, it doesnt look as dedicated as lets say, halo 2, so it wont be too hard

Also, how long until you UNLOCK MAPS????? I want to play Detroit...but it's going to take a LOT of work (or a cheat code ;) )
I have yet to play online.....I was hoping some of my friends would pick it up.

Wow! I finally started playing yesterday and I definately love this more than NFSU/NFSU2. This game is tight, the customization is awesome, and the graphics, gameplay, just wow. The music is sooooo f*ing annoying on NFSU and I'm sooo glad that MC3 has custom soundtracks definately makes this game very enjoyable. I havent really played NFSU2 but now that I've played MC3 im definately trading NFSU2 to my local GR.

NFSU was a LOT better than NFSU 2 imo...

Just picked this up today from EB. FANTASTIC game. It combines the best parts of Project Gotham with the best parts of Need for Speed : Underground and Hot Pursuit. It just works really well.
The custom soundtrack problem is REALLY pissing me off though. THREE TIMES my game crashed using different soundtracks. So I'm just going to use their soundtrack until they release some sort of fix for it.
Other than that, this game is definitely worth picking up if you have the cash or the 5 PO games to trade in at EB.

it's FANtastic :D...i havent had the soundtrack problem yet...and i hope i dont :) but i think i have the glitch where it skips some songs in the custom soundtrack :(

That's not just a glitch for custom soundtracks. Happens for the regular songs too.

that sucks...and i wish they let the songs randomize instead of playing them in the order of how you ordered the songs in your soundtrack :(

Burnout 3, hands down.

A lot of other people have been running into this problem. If the game does it to you, switch to a different custom soundtrack.
I've used three custom soundtracks, two of which have under 50 songs, the third has over 200. Never experienced this issue. I would imagine that it's a drive issue, since custom soundtracks are on the HD and it has to switch to the CD to play the song that plays after the race. What drive do you have?
Y'all getting that glitch in the garage, with the repeated ratchet sound...its driving me INSANE!
Now that's one glitch that I HAVE had. Annoying as hell.
and i wish they let the songs randomize instead of playing them in the order of how you ordered the songs in your soundtrack :(
At least you can change the songs. (Left and Right on the D-Pad)
I'm largely unimpressed, everything done here has been done before. The AI can be frustratingly cheap, the graphics are very, very sub-par (it only looks good when you're going fast, which is most of the time.. do a cruise mode and check out the bland textures on the cars).. and nitrous does almost nothing (off a ramp, anyways. I went the exact same distance driving normally and with nitrous).. the car models take minimal damage (I'm suprised they take any at all, to be honest).. Controls need to be adjusted before you take on a huge race..
I wouldn't pay $50 for it, but I'd say $30 would seem about right. Switching to rap music after every race is annoying, switching to rap music right before every race is annoying.. guess I should've expected that though..
The customization details, however, are absolutely amazing. You can change your license plate to whatever state you're from and choose your own tag.. very, very nice on the customization..
The civilian car AI is very, very simplistic.. they follow a set path, and if something interrupts that, they stop.

After hitting two cars, I successfully created rush hour traffic in Nashville.
Given a choice of all three (Burnout 3, Midnight Club 3 and NFSU2), i'd choose Burnout 3.. but despite the flaws above, Midnight Club 3 would be a very, very close second. I've got it until Wednesday (I'm low on $ and all games that I COULD trade are going towards Wrestlemania), so if you guys wanna play, send an invite.

I'd have to disagree. Of the three, this is the best hands down. Burnout would be fun if it wasn't so fast that my eyes started melting out of the sockets as soon as I tried concentrating on avoiding obstacles in my path. Need for Speed Underground (both) became very repetitive after a while (by a while I mean about 2 hours into it). This game, so far, has the best combination of physics, handling, AI, and customization that I've seen on a racing game since Project Gotham 2 - one of my favorite racing games of all time.
The custom soundtrack glitch is driving me fucking nuts though. They better come out with a fix for that really fast or I will smite them. Heh.

yea IMO, mc3 > bo3 > nfsu >>> nfsu 2
mc 3's single player > bo 3's single player
mc 3's multi = bo 3's multi
IMO
nfsu was a great game, the online sucked though...nfsu 2 was just plain boring to me...i dozed off a few times when playing it

This game is freaking awesome. I have so much money but no cars to buy. I wish I could just unlock the cars with a cheat code lol. I've won like 50 races already and i'm still at class c.
