View Full Version : YMMV Taget raincheck-20% off...not 47%

As you may or may not know, Dragon Ball Z: Taiketsu is on sale for $16
this week at Target. It's regular price is $30, once your local Target runs out of copies, ask for a raincheck and it will allow you to "choose a sunbstitute" and get 47% off any game. Unfortunately, I know some of you all have Targets that do not allow this anymore, thus it is YMMV. Also, depending on your Target, they may only allow you to substitute a GBA game for a GBA game, rather than being able to substitute for any system.
Please don't abuse this trick and pick up 11 Rainchecks from your store, people that do that suck.
Also, please don't start arguing whether or not this is morally just...I didn't create this thread to discuss morals, so if you have any objections to this deal don't post them here.

You do realize that just because you ask people not to criticize you about it doesn't mean they aren't going to.

I know, but it's better than saying nothing at all about it. The last two threads based on this deal turned into a, "You are going to hell because you have no morals!" debate. So, I do what I can.

You know what the funny thing is? The original poster framed this completely correctly. It is legal and within targets policy... and he even points out not to abuse it, as the abuse has caused some Targets to drop the policy alltogether.
The only way I see this one taking a horrible turn into the morals arguments is if some fool comes into it and talks about how he got 20 PS2 games, a stack of Xbox games and a bunch of GBA and GC games.
Listen to the original poster.. be kind, and think of your fellow CAGs when taking advantage of this deal. Taking any more than 5 rainchecks that you intend to subsitute is begining to cross the line.

No, it works on a category system...So it allows you to only substitute "software for software" or "TV for TV."[/quote]

No. It must be in the same product catagory.. that is, it must be in the same catagory as videogames (I don't know the catagory number off the top of my head.
I wouldn't get to hyped up about this sale though... when Yu Yu Hakusho was on a similar sale, the stock at 3 targets around me never dropped to a point where rainchecks needed to be offered.

THIS IS NOT A DEAL!
This is a "let's take advantage of X store's policy and get away with whatever we can!"
The reason we don't want shady deals is NOT because of morals, but because it will give this site a bad reputation and hurt the site and cheapy! Why can't you morons understand that?

how do you get a raincheck? Do you have to ask a employee or can you just fill it out yourself?
Ask an employee or go to the customer service desk.

No, I didn't mean it that way. I meant if a TV is on sale and they dont have it and I get a raincheck for 33 percent off or whatever I can get 33 percent off any other tv?
Never knew that
can the thing be on sale also?
Ugamer_X
04-18-2004, 03:09 PM
so if they are out of the game all I have to do is go ask for a raincheck on the game. Then they will give me a form to where I can check get 47 percent off a game. Then take the slip, pickout any game and use it for 47 dollars off?
Yeah, just don't use the raincheck on the same day that you get it, just because it looks bad...Also it's 47% off, not 47 dollars (unless you can find a $100 game).

YMMV on that one, some Targets say the item you are substituting must not be on sale.
Ugamer_X
04-18-2004, 03:15 PM
what certifies what the percentage is off the item?
It's the amount you save on the sale price from the regular price...For example, the DBZ game is regularly $30, but this week it is $16. That's a savings of $14 or 47%.

He does mention that.... he tells people not to go insane exploiting it.
Target uses it's sales as a loss leader, so they are selling at this price to get you in the door anyway. If they don't have the item you want, they either keep you happy with an immediate subsitution, or have you come back in to the store to get the item at that price after the sale ends.
No matter what, Target gets you in the store, which is what they intended the sale to.
Of course, the other people that end up posting in this about how they got 20+ games on sale with a raincheck is what makes the site look bad. If you get 1 or 2 games at a discount price thanks to Target's favorable policy, it doesn't make Cheapy D look bad, and stays faithful to the intent Target had when they offered the raincheck policy. In fact, every time these have been offered, that's how it treated it. I'd get one or two rainchecks, and actually try to buy the game they offered it for. If that game didn't come in before the raincheck expired, I would get something else that was a similar item (GBA for GBA, PS2 for PS2, etc.).
It's not the orginal poster that will make CheapyD look bad....
it will be the people coming and bragging about how badly the exploited it.

Well some people have already had to deal with the repercussions of their exploitation of the raincheck deal as some of the Targets no longer offer rainchecks. I say you make your bed and you gotta sleep in it. They wanna exploit it now, they'll only have to pay for it later.

Getting the rainchecks is not a problem. I have gotten rainchecks for games that actually still were in stock. But I got nothing but the runaround when I tried to use them, whether the game was there or not. Once I was told I have to use it on that game because it was there, and another time when the game wasn't there they said I'd have to wait until they got one in because the raincheck was good for 90 days and they would have one by then. By that point I decided it wasn't worth fighting with them to save the money.

Their is no limit on the rainchecks as to how many you can or can't have.

You get the raincheck cause the SPECIFIC title on sale. IF that title is in stock, I can see why they wont let you use that raincheck on another game. Because of exploitation of the policy, the hoarders will, and probably already have ruined it for everyone. Eventually the policy will totally suck(like it will be for a title specific option only).

If you go and get 20 of them, it is indeed a shady deal.
There is a limit which reason would dictate... the stores that don't offer rainchecks for the Video and Computer Game product catagories anymore after the Madden deal show that. Target expects some losses from offering the deal, but if a bunch of people go and create losses 5-10X higher than Target expected to record, they'd drop raincheck policy.
It's all about reason and self control.
Talking about how you got 20 new games from each of the systems for 16-25 dollars because of this shows you have neither, and does indeed cast a little bit of a taint on the board. Not as much as outright theft, but a taint nevertheless.

I'm assuming your talking about me and you misunderstood. I have no problem with using the gamers gift card or even the rainchecks, i have a problem with people getting 50 rainchecks for a game they weren't even interested in and then using the rainchecks for the next 90 days on their video game purchases. That is exploiting the system.

and for those of you with tunnel vision, this "raincheck thing" works for the entire store. I wanted to buy a certain lamp on sale, they were out of stock, i got a raincheck for 33% any lamp, or the one i was looking for at that price.
As of right now, it is part of thier buisness model, and they understand the risks...thats why they sent out memo's about the madden raincheck being abused. I dont agree with using 20 rainchecks, but then again i also dont agree with target notletting you use them once you have them.

Is it questionable and/or abusive yes, Shady no.
In my previous post I was mainly pointing out the Double Standard that some of the posters here use.
JSweeney

Shady is synonimous with questionable and/or abusive. You're arguing terms where there is no dispute about the terms.
The apparent "double standard" isn't because word of mouth is what is hurting CheapyD's site, or the attitudes of the posters on the board... rather, its the withdrawling of advertisers and such because of people that are knowingly and openly posting exploits on the site to steal and/or defraud companies. Calling people morons, idiots and such is par for the course.. it's an internet message board. But documenting in careful detail an exploit designed to defraud a company goes beyond the pall of what is expected and acceptable behavior on a message board. There are some people who are overly vigilant, overly agressive, or mildly offensive in thier posts against such activities on the board, but that's because there have been a glut of these "scams" and "exploits" recently thanks to the dearth of actual clearence deals and such, and it's the same 5-10 people arguing the issue on both sides... so many of the people on both sides of the issue are carrying over thier grudges and such from previous posts.

He's right. The raincheck for DBZ: Taiketsu is 20% off. I tried to pick the game up at two different Target stores yesterday but they didn't have it or they mistakenly put Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku II in it's spot on the rack.
