DB/Z/GT, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Big O, and Lupin III.
I've never been much of an anime fan, tho I do have fond memories of Robotech and Star Blazers in their dubbed and chopped glory.
But I really, really, really enjoyed the new Cowboy Bebop movie. Nice to see some different themes explored without the typical cliched characters.

Lupin is an older anime, from around the 70's I guess. Lupin and his pals are a group of theves that steal things. Most of the episodes are about how they are going for this one item, and either get it in a very bizzare way or on accident.
http://www.ex.org/3.6/images/cover_lupin3cd.gif
Trigun is about this guy named Vash the Stampede thats a unbelievably good gunman set in the Wild West. He is also a suppoesed outlaw, but he's a good guy. I havn't seen much of it to explain any more.
http://drs.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=trigun/v=2/l=IVS/*-http://www.screensaverchina.com/cartoon/trigun.jpg
Big O is just another mech anime. Guy has this huge robot, fights other robot. I like the theme song more than anything else.
http://www.robotoys.com/BigO.gif
All of them are on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. M-Th. Times are East Coast:
Futurama - 11:00
Family Guy - 11:30
Big O - 12:00
Kikander (Or some crap like that) - 12:30
Trigun - 1:00
Lupin III - 1:30

Ehh I saw Spirited Away... Not that great.. =/ Whats Princess Monoke about?
Spirited Away has the same magic that the Neverending Story had. To say that, is to say it's an amazing accomplishment in anime. Castle in the Sky is another amazing movie. Apparently Princess Mononoke is one of Miyazaki's best, so I'm looking forward to watching it tonight.
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential video
This epic, animated 1997 fantasy has already made history as the top-grossing domestic feature ever released in Japan, where its combination of mythic themes, mystical forces, and ravishing visuals tapped deeply into cultural identity and contemporary, ecological anxieties. For international animation and anime fans, Princess Mononoke represents an auspicious next step for its revered creator, Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service), an acknowledged anime pioneer, whose painterly style, vivid character design, and stylized approach to storytelling take ambitious, evolutionary steps here.
Set in medieval Japan, Miyazaki's original story envisions a struggle between nature and man. The march of technology, embodied in the dark iron forges of the ambitious Tatara clan, threatens the natural forces explicit in the benevolent Great God of the Forest and the wide-eyed, spectral spirits he protects. When Ashitaka, a young warrior from a remote, and endangered, village clan, kills a ravenous, boar-like monster, he discovers the beast is in fact an infectious "demon god," transformed by human anger. Ashitaka's quest to solve the beast's fatal curse brings him into the midst of human political intrigues as well as the more crucial battle between man and nature.
Miyazaki's convoluted fable is clearly not the stuff of kiddie matinees, nor is the often graphic violence depicted during the battles that ensue. If some younger viewers (or less attentive older ones) will wish for a diagram to sort out the players, Miyazaki's atmospheric world and its lush visual design are reasons enough to watch. For the English-language version, Miramax assembled an impressive vocal cast including Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup (as Ashitaka), Claire Danes (as San), Minnie Driver (as Lady Eboshi), Billy Bob Thornton, and Jada Pinkett Smith. They bring added nuance to a very different kind of magic kingdom. Recommended for ages 12 and older. --Sam Sutherland

He ONLY makes the best anime movies there are. Not ones with out of control tentacle demons that repe women, but movies that win academny awards and such. One of his (I believe it is Princess Mononoke) is the 2nd highest grossing film there behind Titanic (Ugh) or something like that.
Yes, he produces/writes films such as last years best animated picture of the year, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Castle of Colgiostro, etc. :)

Downloading a song or 2 off of a CD is fine; I dont see why I should pay $15 for a CD or $5 for a single if thats all Im going to listen to. Downloading some anime/tv shows is alright in my book too. Rurouni Kenshin DVD's are around $25 - $30 for 4 episodes.
Software is a differnt story, but as long as you dont go and get a bootleg Windows XP.
Downloading movies is bad though. Especially ones still in theaters. This should only be a last resort if your local movie place doesnt have it. Where I live we are JUST getting a small movie store opening up. I have a wide selection of about 100 VHS and 20 DVD's. And I dont feel like driving 30-45 minutes to just rent something and have to return the next day or 2. Be grateful for what you got.
By the way, what do you use?

Yeah, it was pretty good. I've seen him pull out a bunch of handguns from it before too. He is some guy who goes around and collects money for a church. Hence, the cross that he carries.

I don't care if someone downloads anime, so long as it isn't of a series I want a DVD set of.
People that download thier anime are unlike to go out at buy the DVDs, and expensive as the stuff can get, I don't want to start buying episodes of a series that they eventually stop producing DVDs in the middle of the series because some loser is distributing it over the Internet.
Of course, that's why I rarely start buying the anime for a series before 1. They've released all the episodes, or 2. The release box sets of an entire arch (while not as good as a full series, it soften the blow if the series gets dropped).
Of course, with the DVD releases of Transformers, G.I Joe, and The Family Guy, I have a feeling that Japanese animation is going to have to take a backseat for a while.
The first season Big O theme reminds of the the Flash Gordon movie theme.

If anyone's interested many Gamestop locations are clearing out their anime sections. call ahead and ask what the sale is, but a few locations near me are 30-50%+ off new and used anime. They may drop to more than 50% off soon. Plus, some stores let you use your GameInformer card for an extra 10% off. But I picked up quite a lot for my money last week:
(all complete series, many have 5-8 DVDs in set. all came with collector's boxes, tshirts, cels, etc)
Berserk
Kyo
Full Metal Panic
Lain
.hack
Initial D
Bubblegum Crisis
Bubblegum Crisis 2040
Scryed
Gasaraki
Trigun
Now & Then
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Metropolis
Generator Gawl
Najica, came with panties(?), my girlfriend's not into anime, but liked the panties.
RahXephon
Witch Hunter Robin
GTO
Boogiepop Phantom
Big O
Soul Hunter
Noir
Blue Gender
Blue Submarine
and a few more complete series
plus (not anime):
TAKEN (scifi series) $15
Spawn (Animated set)
Aeon Flux Collector's (VHS)
all for around $400.
I had to shop at several stores to fill in the missing volumes, but all were on clearance because most Gamestops will stop carrying anime in March. They told me that too many people are buying bootlegs and downloading so there's no need for gamestop to waste precious shelf space. fine by me. I plan on buying much more when I find it.
i.e Blue Gender, someone turned in their collection, each DVD was priced at less than $3 used, they gave it to me for $1.25 each after all the discounts.
If you think $400 is alot, then you haven't shopped for anime in awhile. It's a steal. Plus, I can write it all off my taxes because I'm launching an anime site before summer. Got the perfect domain for it, might as well use it.

call the local gamestop first, and if they say you missed the sale, or that there is no sale, then ask them if they are getting more anime in. If they are, that store may/will not be discounting anime at all. hopefully GS online will be selling off the anime soon.

Umm.. some of those series haven't even been finished in R1 yet.
Anyway, if anyone is interested in checking out some good shows, I recommend S-cry-ed and Great Teacher Onizuka very highly, two of my favorites. If you want something good to watch with your wife/girlfriend, try Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Ultra Maniac, or Kaleido Star. My wife also loved GTO, so maybe try that too. Other cool shows: Gad Guard, Future Boy Conan (Miyazaki's first major work), Narutaru, Mahoromatic, Full Metal Panic, Noir, and Yaiba. Try some out, you may enjoy them.

Yeah, $400 is a steal for those who collect anime series. For example, a typical 26-episode series will run across 6-8 DVDs, each costing around $20+.
Can you write off your anime purchases? I used to run an anime website which I closed down last summer. It was pretty fun to do at first but then I just got sick of writing content such as reviews and stuff. Plus I wasn't enjoying watching anime anymore, it got to be a job to keep up with things and write reviews about it. But being able to write off anime purchases, well that would have been a big plus. Good luck.
Usually interest in anime and games go hand in hand. In my case, I started watching anime before I played videogames (really before video games existed... :? ), getting into some of the old school shows like Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers, along with some classic kaiju like Johnny Sokko and Spectraman, when they were on broadcast TV. This was in the days of Pong, mind you, and it wasn't until a couple years later when we got our first console - the Mattel Intellivision. Being brought up with that, I've always had an affection toward Japanese-style animination, whether that be in anime or as an influence in video games.
Looks like there isn't a lot of crossover interest on these boards, which is weird. I say this because of most of the anime mentioned in this thread (i.e., mostly Cartoon Network stuff). Mr. Rhee, you picked up a lot of good stuff there. If I tried to list everything worth watching I'd still be leaving some great stuff out, but here's a short list:
Series:
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Berserk
Boogiepop Phantom
Lupin the 3rd
X TV Series
Demon Lady (a good sleeper hit)
Star Blazers (of course)
Ai Yori Aoshi (romance comedy)
Mahoromatic
Initial D
Maison Ikkoku
Martian Successor Nadesico (the series, not the movie)
OVAs (original video animation - basically straight-to-video releases):
FLCL
Armitage III
Battle Angel
Ah! My Goddess
New Cutey Honey
Dominion Tank Police
Vampire Princess Miyu (not the TV series, but the four-part OVA series)
Movies:
Night of the Galactic Railroad
Metropolis
Akira (not that great, but it's a classic nonetheless)
Vampire Hunter D/Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (for those videogame fans)
Jin-Roh
Millenium Actress
Perfect Blue
Mobie Suit Gundam Movies 1-3
Kiki's Delivery Service
Patlabor I and II

yeah, many moons ago, i opened a collector's store with a few buddies. it was over 2,000 sq.ft. I owned 1/3 of the business but put in no capital whatsoever. they just wanted someone with connections in the anime & comics world. but we were the first in the area, if not region or east coast to rent anime. this was way before blockbuster even cared. in fact, this was long before DVDs. good grief. been a long time. anyway, the walls were lined with great anime titles, manga, toys, comics, magic, etc and by far, the anime section grew to the point that it out-performed comics. what started with 10+ titles, grew to over a hundred. we were charging $4/night per tape, $1 for extra days, but must return on fourth day. we offered discounts and the anime rentals thrived. i think "Overfiend" ;) rented more than any other title. I miss those days. i remember one of the local Blockbuster managers was a comic book client who decided to compete with us head-to-head on anime, but of course could not carry the mature titles. Our main competitors were bootleggers. but it was amazing. I sold my share in the business, right before the comic book industry crashed when baseball card dealers started ordering in bulk to flip hot titles. glutted & gutted the market. .25 cent bins everywhere. sad. the store closed about a year after I jumped ship.
someday, I may open another anime-themed business offline, but I'll stick to online for now. but you are right, sooner or later, I may grow tired of watching anime if it becomes a job, so I may share the burden of writing reviews with users/friends.
but i will check out many titles on your list.

I'm glad to see someone had the taste to list FLCL. That's one of the ebst Anime series I've seen. Also Eva is not TOO complex for whoever mentioned that. If I remember it correctly, the creator of the series purposefully made the series nonsensical towards the end because he was sick of the die-hard fans. I had a video file of him at a convention, and when this fan stands up and says he didn't liek how the series ended, the creator (forget name, but he was wearing these goofy sunglasses and like an orange shirt) stands up and says simply "Too bad!" I thought it was hilarious.

Dude... don't forget to mention that GOTF is THE saddest movie ever. I've had people watch it after hearing my recommendation without knowing what they were getting into... and they were kinda upset. So be aware, all who may watch this movie: it is absolutely the saddest thing I have ever seen. Also, it is brilliant and should be seen by all, so don't let the whole sadness thing deter you. Yes, I own the whole collection  Umm, the 2nd OVA, Eikoden, is just ok. It has little focus on Miaka, but a new character appears: Maya, who's really annoying. She goes back into the book and starts causing havoc, so Taka (tamahome) has to go back and right everything. (I don't wanna give too much away). They squeeze this into 4 episodes, so it feels pretty rushed. If you liked the series and the first OVA, then definitely check it out. You may be a little disappointed but at least you will have seen it all. It's difficult to live up to the TV series, which was really wonderful.
Hope that helped! :)

i first thought lupid the 3rd was gonna suck, but after just one show, i loved it. although its really "old looking" it has a really good plot line and such.
Well it aired in the early 70's :)
Yeah, and if you liked Cowboy Bebop at all you'll like Lupin - and immediately notice the similarities between the two. It's completely obvious Lupin was a major influence on Bebop.

cripes only two people mentioned Fooly Cooly? its one of the best animes ever. and if you want cheap anime, check bestprices.com. i was able to get all three dvds of FLCL (normally $30 each) for 18 apiece. cant beat that bloody with a stick.
For those who haven't seen FLCL you have to run out now and buy it. Even though the DVDs are only 2 episodes each, they are stocked with extras like Director's Commentary and nice packaging.
FLCL is so crazy it hurts your brain. And the music by The Pillows is awesome! Just don't expect to watch a normal story, this one is best served with your favorite "medicine"...

Yes, I purchased that shortly after it went out of print. It was the Limited Edition Box Set. 7 DVDs (26 episodes) and the OST, in a really nice box with a flip-top lid. They only made 15,000 sets, so it flew off the shelves. Wicked glad I got it. :)

BTW, i also work at a comic book store (Comic City, Novi MI...PLUG) so i can basically read any manga i want. Unfortunately my girlfriend has a job, so she cant just sit there and read it all day. I like the IDEA of shonen jump, and its great for people to get a taste of manga, but im really only interested in a certain few. Plus i hate reading such small amounts at one time, thats why i buy the one peice GN.

Yeah, I could see why you wouldn't bother in your position... But it seems to me that each manga in shonen jump is roughly the size of one american comic... of course, most people just buy graphic novels of the as well.
Of course, now I'm hooked on Naruto and One Piece, and actually like Yu Gi Oh, so just keeping the subscription instead of tracking down the graphic novels makes more sense to me.

Miyazaki has to be the Walt Disney of our time. I personally believe that he has produced some of the best movies ever. Calling them movies is kind of demeaning anyway, this truly counts as art.
My Favorite Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) films:
+My Neighbor Totoro (My Japanese teacher showed us this a month ago and it was pretty awesome)
+Spirited Away (Such a great story and well animated it really deserved a US theatrical release.)
+Princess Mononoke (AWESOME visuals, storytelling, direction, etc.)
Oh yeah, Otomo's AKIRA is really nice as well. But after a couple of viewings it kinda got boring to me, for the real experience you need to read the manga (either get the volumes from Barnes and Nobles or something or get the old marvel issue run that was in color from you comic shop).

Yup, AKIRA was a groundbreaking film more for its technical achievements and grandiose presentation rather than for it's storytelling. Visually it still looks as good as anything released today, and this movie is 15 years old. But it's narrative is a little lacking - it misses the pacing and structure which benefits mosts films today, and as a result seems a little disjointed and overlong. And it doesn't avoid the climactic over-indulgence which inflicts most anime feature films.
If you are interested, TOKYOPOP released the first volume of the AKIRA "Cine-manga", a full-color graphic novel with images captured directly from the digital film source:

Hmmm... Tentacles.
I may ask my Japanese teacher tommorow "What is La Blue Girl?" just to freak her out (shes from Japan).
EDIT: She will probably say "Nihon Go Deh!" meaning she will only answer if I ask her in Japanese or not at all, she usually does this when we have questions of this nature so she can get away with telling us some convoluted answer in Japanese we wont understand.

I just got Ranma 1/2: Season 1 (for $49.99 used :D). I have to say that is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen anime or otherwise. I can't wait to buy more.
I dig pretty much everything on Adult Swim. Lupin is awesome (very funny). Trigun is good (sometimes the goofiness doesn't really work well considering how serious the series gets at time but its still good). Cowboy Bebop is very good. Big O is IMO the best show on Adult Swim right now. Inuyasha is great.
I also like Dirty Pair, NightWarriors, Street Fighter II V, Devil Hunter Yohko (KICKASS IMO).

For those of you who enjoy totally pointless animes, animes that make fun of themselves and other animes, then I would suggest Puni Puni Poemi. I just watched the first episode (only two episodes, but believe me, to make more would have been pointless) and it toally makes fun of the Magical Girl genre. Her wand out of a gutted fish? a bad guy that speaks in total gibberish, with a weapon that constitutes only his balls? The Scorpion Deathlock only 3 minutes into the first episode?
What more could you ask for?
Oh yeah, for the males, nekkid women, lesbianism, and big boobs!

So apparently there is going to be a live-action version of Witch Hunter Robin coming to the Sci-fi channel near the very end of this year or so. I like the anime, and the live-action adaptation is being handled by the same guys who made the Ring from Ringu so it should at least be interesting.
With regards to the earlier posts regarding Miyazaki and Disney:
Disney long ago purchased the distribution rights to Studio Ghibli films for North America...and they held that license without releasing any of the actual films. For several, several years, Miyazaki fans made do with screenings at film festivals and bootlegs. In fact, I only purchased a DVD collection (which is obviously not legitimate for sale in North America because it's not offered through Disney or their subsidiary, Buena Vista) because Disney wouldn't specify any date for release (or any release at all) on DVD when the collection became available online. After Spirited Away was released in theaters, however, Disney has begun making these classic titles available on DVD at last.
That being said, it's kind of pricey to collect these titles one by one as Disney dribbles them out individually. Here's a link to the collection (this was the first link I found to it: I'm not familiar with this vendor and can offer no assurances about this site, but at least it shows the titles and their dates of release:
http://www.edvdstore.com/d0188.htm
Wiggy to think that these titles have been around for decades, only to have much of the American public think that they're new. For big Miyazaki fans, don't forget about The Castle of Cagliostro, which I believe he had a hand in making (it's not affiliated with Ghibli.) As a last aside, the only other anime title of note that I can mention would be Ghost In The Shell, which is commonly compared to Blade Runner (and no, it is nothing like Miyazaki's works!)

The Samurai X OVA (Trust and Betrayal) were beyond hot. Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Ninja Scroll are just classics.
I also absolutely loved the movies Kite and Perfect Blue, if anyone else ever saw either.
As for series, Trigun is sweet. I also bought the boxed set for Blue Seed, which was well worth my $40. I was really into Gundam Wing when that first was on cartoon network. And Evangelion's been my holiest possessions for over half a decade now.

I'm cusious if anyone know the name of this anime i watched a long time ago(7 or 8 years) on UPN. It had a guy that could transform into a robot using a crystal and he escaped so he was good, and he had to fight all of his captured family member who had been brainwashed and were evil. The main guy's crystal ended up breaking and he'd have to use a robot to transform(that could also be used as a airboard to perform supermoves. I realize this is a shot in the dark but if any one know that name of it id appreciate it.

Anime? Yeah, I've watched a few. I've fansubbed a few back in the day as well. ^^; Slayers TRY episodes 1-2 (the good version!) was my first project. I collect many things not the least of which include shitajiki, artbooks, OSTs, video games and many, many cels. The nice ones... they aren't cheap unfotrunately, but I love them. I love meeting Japanese GoH at conventions that I Staff and getting items signed, but I LOVE getting sketches and have acquired a number of them over the years. ^^x
I've been Staffing anime conventions since '97 at quite a few venues to say the least. Otakon is still my favorite to Staff and attend, but AX (LA), Anime Central, Animazement and AWA (the party convention) are some other favs. It's great to see anime become as popular as it has nowadays in the States. ^^x

Not sure of the value moiety. I would have to say easily over 10K since it's around 1000 disc's and I probaly paid a median price of $15 each. That collection is most impressive!!
didn't[/i] like.
Actually, Kiki's Delivery Service is probably my favorite, as well. I think it's mostly influenced by order of exposure. People often consider the first Miyazaki film they see to be their favorite, and since Mononoke Hime and Spirited Away were the first samplings of his work to the mainstream American public, they're often people's "favorites." One of my favorite one-word movie quotes is still Jiji saying,"Nudo?" Incidentally, I was put off a bit by Spirited Away the first time I saw it, since it's so different from his earlier works--well, in some ways--but it really grew on me with each viewing. If you only watched it once, it might merit a second chance.
