I was just staring at a counter full of porkchops when it occured to me how great the pig has been to me. Ham, bacon, pork chops, pork roasts, most of a hotdog... they are definitely a handy little critter.
After that, I thought what animal was the most important... At first I thought it would be the horse. They allowed us to move farther west in America, sweep over battle fields during times of war and also made a great deal of farm work possible. However... then I considered oxen. They were just as prevailent in the western push and they are stronger than horses. Additionally, you could use females for their milk and cowish animals taste better than horses.
So... what single animal do you think have done us the most good, barring sexual practices...

Don't forget sheep. Proved humanity with clothing and food for eons... and *ahem* even provided 'companionship' for lonely shephards out in the hills:puke:

I would say the most important animal is the dog. It was one of the first domesticated animals and it helped to domesticate others. It also has helped in areas such as hunting, tracking, protection, and social development (believe it or not). Plus if there were no dogs, how would we learn to take a bite out of crime?

You can make pretty much anything out of soy beans. (beverages, foods, biodeisel(fuel), (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodiesel)candles, and crayons (http://www.indianasoybeanboard.com/crayons.shtml)) why no one else realizes this I'll never know.
but yeah, for usefulness cows are pretty good. they make milk, have sturdy hides, and can haul and...moooove stuff. heh.

I say the monkey. People just just haven't realized their full potential yet. In the future I wouldn't be surprised if we have monekys fighting our wars, eating monkey meat, drinking monkey milk, using monkey fuel, using monkey fur in our clothing, having sex with monkeys . . . I could go on and on.

Spiders are the most important
If all the spiders were killed in the world, we would be overrun by insects in less than 12 hours

 I love made up stats. If all the spiders died the insects, bats, birds, snakes and others would see population booms, the ecosystem has quite a few buffers in it.

Haven't seen what happens as a result of that? I have and you don't want Charleton Heston taking them on. Though a musical version of that would kick so much ass.

I didn't say 4th graders had less sense, most college profs are nuts, but from a certain point of view their information is normally corret.;)

It's cool in concept but I don't think anyone can pull it off. But I'll tell you what's cooler, a Final Fantasy Opera. I'd go see that in a second.

Back on topic, the most important animal is the horse. While other animals have had tremendous effects, just think. The horse was used as transportation for riding and pulling carriages. It was bred with the donkey to create the mule; the perfect animal for plowing and irrigating fields. It was used in warfare, forever impacting the political layout of Europe and North America. I could go on. But yeah, the horse.
And mice are important, because without them the earth wouldn't exist anyways. (Wh4t i2 the question??)

Monkey Milk
:puke:
I'll probably see Cows. They provide meat, milk, leather, and we used to to help till the soil. Also provide manure to help feritilization. But the food is the most important part.
Mmm.. steak...

Its also one of the shyest animals there are. They dont even hang around their own kind. Which makes me wonder how they propagate further?

The Hamster. Dancing for entertainment, Eating their young, Universal power source, we wouldn't have computers without little hamsters to power them.
And the most obvious reason, have you ever tried to make a fried hamster sandwich without the hamsters?

Oh yeah, there are a couple more uses...a horse can be eaten for food, and in some countries mare's milk is used as a food item for human consumption. Horses' hides can be made into leather too, and I remember reading accounts of early American settlers using horse hair from the tails and manes for sewing thread. Horses hooves were the orignal ingredient for Jello. Horse manure can be used for fertilizing farmland.
This reminds me of an old saying I heard somewhere: "A dog is man's best friend but a horse is man's greatest slave."

I saw the okapi at the bronx zoo today, it was miserable. It is also a rare species, to which is the only living ancestor of the giraffe
