I don't see any controller ports so maybe wireless controllers?

I'll assume the thing on the right is for the removable hard drive.

Is the black hole on the left for a controller? Was it said that the system will use wireless controllers?

At least it's not the godless monstrosity the Xbox was. A good system, but ugly as hell.

Thats much less horrendous than the xbox... Still looks kinda big though.

according to engadget these pictures have been confirmed. Honestly the design dissapoints me a bit compared to the sexiness of the psp heh. But yeah it's still better than the original Xbox. I was hoping for something crazier tho, but of course that's only a very minor issue.

this is a very plausable pic

1.confirms allards hint to wireless controllers
2.confirms allards removable HD rumor
3.Intergrates the shown power button
4.has the same shape and color
5.is profusuly simple

this is looking more realistic, though it doesnt look like an actual pic for some reason

The black "button" on the left looks like it isn't a button at all, but rather an IR receiver for wireless controllers. Most TVs have these for receiving the signal from the remote. I guess they went with IR over radio for wireless to cut down on interference from other devices, or at large LAN parties, where a large number of controllers would require an equally large number of radio channels. The Wavebird supports 16 channels, though, so either Microsoft couldn't work that into their design, or they're planning for LAN parties with more than 16 players.

My guess is that the picture from ourcolony is of the left side of the machine, and that the silver bar is a handle for LAN parties. I'm guessing the handle may lift up when you pull on it, and collapse flat when not in use. Of course, this is just a wild guess.

As for the button in the ourcolony picture between the vents and the solid plastic, I have no idea what that could be. It looks like it would be a button to release something there, but I can't think of why that side of the machine would detach. I guess we'll find out on May 12.

Why has nobody mentioned that the very top pic says "SA Games Forum LOL"? You can't trust anything that comes from Something Awful, why would you start now? The whole website is built to fuck with everyone else on the net.

These are fakes.

if you say so, that confirms my beliefs, that although a very good photoshop job, it is nevertheless BOGUS

well that's a pretty well made fake then if it is =). I wonder why the engadget folks said thier "source" confirmed it was true =/. Oh well at least the our colony ones should be real.

All in all I'm not real knowledgeable in photoshop so I can't tell.

Did you all honestly think the picture was real knowing the power button is the size of Missouri?

If it is bogus, they incorporated the "new" Xbox logo shown at the end of the MTV commercial. I say... not bogus. The "Xbox" logo matches well, the with extended "B" on the box and the more streamlined text.

Here it is on engadget but that doesn't mean it's real. And we can't really tell the size of it unless it's shown with something else. I thought the Dreamcast was huge until I saw a comparison to other things.

posted in some other topic some larger pictures without the watermark from shacknews.com
also someone posted in the comments section another shot that reveals what might be the hard drive that goes into the side.

These are most likely near final mockups of the system as someone was pointing out that the logo was photoshopped onto the disc tray. The first link doesn't have the logo on the disc tray and the memory slot font is different too...so who knows...

I'd say the IR receiver (transceiver possibly) is more for use with remotes for DVD playback and using the unit as a remote display for a Media Center PC. This is already available as a n option on the Xbox with the Media Extender package. They might make it a standard item on the new machine.

IR is a bad choice for game controllers due to its directionality. A remote for DVD control is no problem to keep pointed but a lot of people flail about quite a bit while playing fast games. Keep in mind the Wavebird uses multiple channels primarily to find one that is free of local RF interference, which is always a concern. Giving each controller a unique ID isn't a big problem. Much like connecting multiple USB game controlllers to a PC (or the Xbox since it uses a modified USB) the devices are enumerated when the system boots up and establishes connections to each. Each would probably have an embedded hardware address chosen from a large numeric range, similar to a MAC address in a NIC, so that each can be distinguished and assigned their numbers for the duration of the session. (It's also possible Microsoft is using the new wireless USB standard to make the controller transparent to existing Xbox games and maintain consistency for experienced Xbox developers.)

The MAC-like addresses could be used for UID throughout the whole process but since there will likely only be four controllers supported at a time it will reduce the amount of data chatter to use only as many bits as are needed to identify the controllers in use. It may be only a couple bytes difference but there is some latency inherently added with wireless controllers so the packets need to be kept short as possible.

Another application for multiple RF channels is to create separate groups of controllers for LAN parties where each machine would need to distinguish its players from those on a machine nearby. This is another reason why using the MAC-like addresses would be unsuitable. You really don't want consumers dealing with hex strings if at all possible.

Not really. THe disc tray is a dead giveaway. Since it is known the console will beusing DVD as its primary media and since it seems unlikely the tray will greatly different from what is common for such things, it's pretty easy to derive the approximate dimensions of the unit. Based on the images the machine wouldn't be any larger than the original PS2, perhaps a bit smaller. A massive improvement on the Xbox's bulk and sure to be more accepted by the Japanese market in that regard.

The Dreamcast never seemed huge to me but then the first time I saw it was in Bernie Stolar's hand when he first announced it at an evening presentation during E3 in Atlanta. The room immediately was struck by its small size.

if that is the final design of the xbox 360 i would be excited. the machine looks a lot smaller that the original xbox which was a problem or an obstacle for a lot of people. i'm not really sure what that port on the right is though? cuz if its a controller port shouldnt there be more than one? i think that this will be way more accepted then the current xbox.

Gamespot today updated their Rumor Control (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/04/25/news_6122804.html) to address the images leaked on Friday. They had this to say about them:

We were also contacted by a source close to Microsoft which verified the first image was indeed of a working Xbox 360 prototype--one of around a half-dozen designs--but not of the final console.

"The first image" to which they refer is the front-on shot of the device (the first one in this thread's original post), seen here (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/04/22/screens_6122804.html?page=1).

It's interesting that the memory card and the controller are both iPod white, while the picture of the system is metallic. I think the picture of the system is real, but that it's maybe not the final design. Kind of how that PSP photo from way back wasn't the final design, but was still pretty close to what we ended up with.

I saw these pics the other day on the-magicbox. I think it looks decent, it continues with the garish Xbox colors but thats part of the reason why I always liked the Xbox logo. The problem I have this time around, is the concave base and surface of the system. If its held horizontally, I'm afraid it won't be sturdy becuase of the concave shape.

These images were on IGN too, and believe to be final prototypes of what the console will look like. As someone said before, think of it like the final pic of the PSP close, but not the same.

good job jugsta, though i will say that the scale could have been approximated by comparing the size ofdisk drive with the rest of the machine. but nice find, its better than these repeat postings of the same pic :)

no gamepro didnt just place the pics on top of each other but rather shrank it till the size of its disc drive was relative in width with the xbox

no scorch dont be silly, they lined up the size of the disk drives, which makes sense because the media is going to tbe the same size. i would say thats a pretty good guess. but who knows. the one think i keep hearing about is this whole maybe hard drive thing. the slot like compartmetn on the right... that look like a really nice fit for a micro hard drive, like the ones used in mp3 players. maybe it will be something sold seperately, a mini hard drive, shoot they might even throw in mp3 player capabilities. i think it makes sense, you could have smaller flash media for some, and a spot for a microdrive for those willing to fork over the extra money
