what has gamespot thinking its real is told in the latest rumor control
As the week began, a photo began to circulate around the Web which purported to be of the next-generation Xbox. Looking like a game-geek version of the famed Loch Ness Monster photo, the blurry image showed a slim silver-gray console on its side, PlayStation 2-style with a GameCube-like curved handle. It also had a distinct "X" logo on the side with a 360-degree circle at its center. While some dismissed the device as a modded PC case, others felt that they had seen it somewhere before. That's because they had. Last September, an image was reportedly leaked from a Microsoft focus group, one of which was called the "Xbox FS." Since the name rumored to stand for "F*** Sony," many people laughed off the silver-gray image that accompanied it. However, when flipped on its side and put next to this week's photo (pictured), the two are clearly the same machine--a machine very much like one with a "concave center" described in recent reports in the British games press. But perhaps the most convincing proof came in the form of an image from the teaser site Ourcolony.net. The site, which has been linked to Microsoft and has "leaked" images of what appears to be Xbox 360 controllers, released a photo of what looks like a console with the a silver-gray finish and a disc tray in the same place as the concept image and leaked photo. One last bit of circumstantial evidence is that at the new MTV trailer for the Xbox's unveiling ends with the Xbox's new logo--against a gray, not black, background.

If you take a look at the pictures at the link you posted, the pictures posted prior by slimpip are clearly NOT the Xenon development kits. The dev kits are modified Power Macs. The pictures that slimpip posted, at least the first and last one that look real, are clearly not of the development kits, since they are not full computer towers.

- UNCONFIRMED: Here are some images of the next generation Xbox console, tentatively named Xbox 360, the images are unconfirmed. The images indicate that Xbox 360 can be placed horizontally or vertically like the PlayStation 2, there are two memory card slots, and the system seems to use wireless controllers instead of traditional wired controllers.
- RUMOR: IGN reported a list of launch titles for Microsoft's Xbox 360, which includes:
* Perfect Dark Zero (Microsoft / Rare)
* Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft)
* Test Drive (Atari)
* Need for Speed Underground 3 (EA)
* Burnout (EA / Criterion)
* New Racing Game (Namco)
- RUMOR: In addition, Microsoft plans to launch Xbox 360 with 15 - 20 titles, including a revised Halo 2.5, which features high resolution graphics, 720p, wide-screen support. Halo 2.5 is supposed to be a bundled title with the hard drive add-on.

While aesthetically similar (color scheme, meshwork), as others have said, the development kits are Mac G5 comps.

I'm fairly convinced that the design shown here is the Xbox 360 (but that's pretty meaningless, truth be told). As a mac user, I'm giddy that MS uses Power Macs as dev kits (and the fact that 360 is a heavily modified Mac); in practical terms, it has made backwards compatibility such a pain in the ass that I wonder if it was worth it.

Well, Microsoft has 49% equity in Apple, so they aren't strictly competition (though the cynics claim that MS did so to keep Apple afloat, and to help their cause against the antitrust suit they began undergoing at the time).
Perhaps the chipset for 360 is more powerful, or cheaper (or a combination of the two). The truth is, I have no idea why.

http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/xbox360/3737115xs.jpg
Some speculation from Xbox-Scene:
OurColony.net, an Alternate Reality Game that is (probably) a Microsoft marketing campaign building up to the launch of the next generation Xbox (like Ilovebees was for Halo2), today released another picture to the teams that answered the last challenge correctly.
The picture, taken upside-down, is probably a memorycard inside the Xbox360 memorycard slot. You can see the slot matches the slots showed on the Xbox360 design renders posted friday.
Also note the "64^" written on the memcard ... which is probably 64MB - the size of memcard (or one of the sizes - it's not excluded there will be several memcard sizes).
Of course this image might not show the final hardware, the ourcolony ARG is all about teasers and buidling up the suspense... I can imagine the final memcard will have atleast a nicer color and sticker on the back.

Memory Card, perhaps? Xbox were 32MB, so 64 would be a reasonable improvement. EDIT: Read the first post, so now I'm aware of being redundant.
However, the need for memory cards seems to confirm that the HDD will be optional; with that in mind, I hope games continue to offer features such as custom soundtracks, downloadable updates, etc. If the HDD is optional, it removes (somewhat) the interest in utilizing a product that not all Xbox users have.

Again I'd like to point out nobody has proven anything in terms of it being "fake". The "good" photo of the Xbox 360 is clearly a picture to be used by the marketing department from magazine ads to hand outs. All these types of images go threw clean up to present the most apealing image. This includes doing things like having multipe light sources and other type of work done on the image. They don't just take out a digital camera and take a photo for those type of things. I think the high res of the image and evreything else about it makes it to be almost a 100% sure thing. It's not some granny pic from some secret bull crap spy or something. This seems to be simply documents being readed for E3 to be given away and put into magazine and somebody either leaked them to the internet or they were released on purpose my Microsoft to creat buzz.

First off about all the "racing" games set at launch.. that doesn't mean there won't be a lot more game at launch (hell, the xbox is mostly for FPS and Racing anyways, save a few RPGs and action titles) . it would be suicide for XB360 not to be BW compatable. (you're telling me that it can't emulate the hardware? especially since its using a modified more powerful mac design, it should be able to .. it can, just needs to be worked into the system) The HD is a must for online gaming, its been said time and time again by developers and speculators. wireless controllers sound cool. but that never really made a difference to me anyway.)

What alternate universe are you posting from? Microsoft had, had as in long since sold off, $160 million in NON-VOTING shares in Apple. Since the company's stock valuation at the was substantially greater than $1 billion, this purchase was a tiny block that would offer little leverage even if it granted voting rights.
The anti-trust issues had been going on since the early 90's. The second round was already well under when the Apple stock purchase occur. It was nothing more than a friendly gesture. Microsoft had plenty of reason not to want Apple to go away including the fact that Microsoft has consistently made more money on selling Mac software than any other company including Apple itself. Office for Mac was a profitable business even while Apple was losing money.
As for the use of PPC in the 360, it's very simple. IBM made MS the best offer on a custome device to meet the needs of what they wanted their next console to be. Microsoft adapted the PC architecture last time due to time constraints. Using that with their existing OS and API code base was the fastest way to get Xbox to market. Otherwise they would have been pretty much shut out of the current generation. On the downside this meant having to buy chips from companies that had neither the time nor the inclination to do much customisation for Microsoft's needs. As a result the Xbox has a lot of costly functionality that is wasted in a game console. Hackers love it but it makes the product bulky and expensive compared to the competition.
Microsoft had much more time to plan for the next generation. IBM's PPC products offered the best combination of price and performance. Other CPU products out there haven't been moving in the direction suited to game consoles. This is why Sony abandoned MIPS after two generations to have PPC as the controlling processor core in the Cell design.
This version of PPC is a major departure from current desktop CPUs. It delivers a lot of performance at low cost but at the requirement of much greater code optimization and the use of techniques that are foreign to most game developers. Neither IBM or AMD could expect to see enough business from a game console, which would by necessity be low margin, to make it worth their time to produce such a major deviation from their desktop and server CPU roadmap.
when it comes down to it there really isn't another big semiconductor company in the world with the motive, ability, IP, and production capacity to match IBM for this job.

I'd been planning to cover it at length in another thread but keep getting distracted by other stuff. I have to leave for a job interview but suffice to say, Virtual PC is not a good measure of how an Xbox emulator on Xbox 360 would work. The console version would have major advantages that make the task doable.
