Ok, we should start planning for the next meetup. I enjoy going to galloping ghost but I don't feel we communicate that much together or do trades/selling items as a group. My first meetup was at bakers square even though there were only five CAGs meeting up that day we chatted for hours and did alot of trades.
I suggest maybe having a BBQ at a park this year and just chill as a group with verbal interaction, play some portable games, trade games and maybe play some softball.
Set it up! I'm down for going to a laid back place where we can just relax, trade, and tell stories of our great CAG conquests. I know some of you had to get lucky with all the BB DOTD's and are sitting on tons of crap to trade off. The BBQ thing is cool too, if you want to wait 6 months. I'd like to do more frequent meet-ups personally, like every 2-3 months. Just post it here and I'm there.

Maybe we can shoot for a summer meet up BBQ in the Northern Burbs and have a winter/spring meetup closer to/in the city (maybe at a bar).
That way we can have an all ages type of thing closer to the burbs for some of the CAGs who haven't been to a meet up before.
I think most all of the regulars are over 21, (except maybe one of us) and I think someone brought up a bar/lounge setting before.
Just throwing some ideas out...I'm fine with pretty much any location. (It allows me to check out a new area) :)

I'm all for a bar, cause I'm drunk a lot, but at the same time, it's not really ideal for a video game trade/discussion area. There's noise, and, well, drunk people. Decent spots for trade meets would be some laid back lesser crowded restaurants, someones house, or the galloping ghost(early in the day it's slow and empty-ish). If you want to meet to have a few drinks, hit me up anytime in the Wrigleyville area, however.

Hey guys,
I'm sure people are familiar with it here, but I was looking for info on People Play Games in the city. I've heard big things about it, but I'm wondering of it would be worth a trip to the city. Is it truly a place to get some rare stuff at a good price, or is it just another game place that gets away with bad prices? I live in Oswego, so I'm wondering if the drive would be worth it.

01-09-2012, 04:09 PM
Eh People Play Games is ok, I used to go in there a bunch when I lived in Lakeview and it was right around the corner from my apartment...it's got a TON of classics (most of them are rip-off priced), but the worst part is that most of my friends that have gone in there since have been treated very rudely when they asked questions or what not.
One of the last times I was down there, I asked to take their last business card on the counter to give to a hard-core classic game friend of mine and the guy huffed and puffed and gave me sh*t about it...I was like "shouldn't you be begging me to take a 5 cent piece of paper that could net you some new business and not act like I'm stealing your only child?"
To answer your question...if you happen to be down on the north side of the city with some extra time to blow, check it out...but I wouldn't drive the 40 miles just to potentially be disappointed by the high prices...
Last thing I picked up from there was Basewars for NES and it was like $7.99 or something plus tax...which if I went to Amazon, it would've been $2.99 plus $2.99 shipping.
I didn't want to be the first one to comment because I've only been there once a few years ago, but I had a similar impression. The wow-factor is high with all the old games you never thought you'd see again, but the atmosphere feels like they successfully transplanted the snooty hip record store vibe. I went in looking for some Dreamcast cables and left with a strategy guide, I think, but I wanted to buy a bunch of older PC games they had in the original chunky-ass boxes.

OHHH, I've been to that place. It was years ago. They had a lot of decent stuff, but it is pretty much overpriced/about right for internet pricing. The only advantage is you can inspect the item in your hands.
Yeah they were kinda hipster dicks when I was there. The music store description is appropriate.
mnuttster
01-09-2012, 04:41 PM
I wanted to like the place so bad because I could walk there in five minutes and find almost anything classic I'd ever want to play (if I was willing to pay for it), but with the guys attitude, it kinda sunk it for me.
It's probably not easy to afford a store front in that area without charging an a** load since I bet they could count on two hands the amount of transactions they got in a day.

OK, here is a possibility for our next meetup:
Gameworks Schaumburg Meetup either Jan, Feb, or March
I have a link below that gives each person 2 hours playtime at Game Works.
There are 3 coupons per person. One for Jan, Feb, and March.
It will probably cost $2 to get the card (if you don't already have one) once we get there.

The parks don't have any fees for a BBQ in Evanston, it appears to be first come first serve. I'm not too far from the beach so I'd probably just bring my portable Weber gas grill. This is the location: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=Dawes+Park&cid=2809099313806911762
You get a great view of the lake, but the beach itself (if you have the need for sand) is $8 to get in (I usually have a few resident passes), but the park and the parking is free.

It's probably been a good 7-8 years since I've been to GameWorks. I enjoy the place, and would go for sure, just give the date. I stopped going mainly because I always had leftover points on the card that never let me get another game in. For example, I'd have like 3 points left on a card and all the games needed something like 4 or more to play. Don't remember exactly, but something like that. It always left me feeling short changed. Well, this and Galloping Ghosts game selection made me not go there at all for the games. But, it's a good place to have a few drinks and just have a good time. Sounds like it would be a fun meet.
BTW, that link says to sign up for the free rewards membership first. Then it says you can get the card to play the games free with membership. So, you guys might want to at least take advantage of that whether going to a meet or not.

games, guides, whatever. Some of us set up trades ahead of time, so we don't have to lug a lot of stuff, others know they want to get rid of stuff and trade/sell everything. It's pretty casual.

I love that Gameworks. I know every Thursday they have all you can play games from 5pm - Close (which is 1 am) for only $10. Maybe everybody can stop by after work for a little bit.
Also I personally love People Play Games. Probably one of the best retro video game stores I've been to. Some of their prices are outrageous, but some are pretty good. If your looking for pretty common games for retro systems I think there prices are fair. I've bought tons of stuff from them and have never had a problem with any of the employees or the managers. They have always been kind and generous every time I've been there.

People Play Games is a huge disappointment. Yeah, it's great to see all of these old games again, but they are marked up heavily and the staff is less than hospitable (as others have stated). Don't waste your time driving in.

Decent place, but some of the prices are whack and NOTHING is organized so it can be hard to find a specific game. After being there for years they still don't have a computer inventory system up and everything organized properly. Nice to look around the shop though.

Videogames in Norridge is MILES better than People Play Games and it's a closer drive for the suburbanites...sure nothing is organized and there are always 100 kids playing LAN party games on the back computers, but they always have more rare stuff and it's usually better priced.
Has anyone ever been to Game Pazzo (http://gamepazzo.com/) in Downers Grove? I've always wanted to go check it out since it was on TV a bunch right after it opened, but never have made it out...

There's only one remotely close to me (about 30 mins away, in Bloomingdale) and I've found a handful of great games there over the last few years.
Plus the people running that specific shop are always really friendly and helpful so I'd hate to see them lose their business.

My old boss and buddy that I play Fantasy Football with ran the Bloomingdale store and he called me one day when I was supposed to swing by and pick up our league dues to tell me that his owner just up and out closed the store without any notice....
I guess the guy owed the plaza and PNT thousands of dollars that he didn't want to pay out of his main business, so he just closed it.
I feel bad for my buddy, but I guess the franchisee was a d-bag and he even kept my shrink wrapping machine that I loaned the store for the holidays...so I'm not a fan of him either

^^^I think you have to be a d-bag to franchise a play n trade. I would always see the owner at TRU whenever there was a deal and he would literally spend $10,000+ when he came in. He would then take everything to his store and slap on a price $5 above MSRP on everything. I asked the kid working there how much he spent and he responded over $17,000 today. I asked, "Do you guys even have $17,000 in merchandise in the gaming section?"
Long story short, that play n trade is closed now.

Interesting... so what are you planning to do with all of those NESes you've found? Willing to part with any in good working order? Curious about picking up the original Contra for it at some point, but I suppose having the appropriate hardware would help.

Yes, I will eventually part with them. I am still cleaning some and on others I am doing a security chip mod. The main reason is to prevent "the blinkies" Power on/off/on/off, but it also allows some PAL games to be played too.
I would like to do some LED mods (basically change the LED color for the power button) and eventually, I would like to do some custom paint on them.
I am still trying to come up with a fair pricing structure for them, since they have all been disassembled and cleaned. I am not looking to gouge people, but I have to take into account the time I spend on them.

thrift stores are a good place to find some old (and new) games. I noticed the salvation army stores are better for newer games and goodwill or savers for older ones.

I don't suppose anyone picked up any of the $20 PS3 controller game bundles that were on clearance at K-Mart. I am still frustrated that I did not check Willowbrook when I found out about the clearance as it was a few days later that someone cleaned them out. I still only have one PS3 controller. :\

From what my co-worker says, her sons love playing it. She isn't to fond of the idea of buying a ton, but you can get away with it if you just buy one of each specialty a figure has like the flying ability. You can just get one of those figures and be good on all the flying portions of the game from how she described it to me.
If anyone is looking for Mass Effect 2 for either 360 or PS3. The BB on four corners (downers grove) had a ton when I went in the morning, 10+

You need a keytag number that you get free when you go to checkout.
Basically the radio shopping show has deals for a lot of different businesses.

I have some questions for you guys:
Do any of you guys have comcast internet that has a wired AND wireless connection?
What router do you use?
Was it provided by comcast?
I have a phone modem and a netgear 614 that they provide, but it severly lags when gaming and on wireless in general. (Speedtest says 30bps on my desktop and I get anywhere from 2-15 bps on my laptop and ps3.)

When I had comcast before I moved, my modem had no wireless access. I just used a linksys router and was good to go. I miss it, because the internet was pretty good, but now I have Directv, and I'm not paying their insane price for internet only(w/o cable it's very expensive). Anyway, from experience and word of mouth, as a general rule of thumb, most wireless solutions provided from the ISPs themselves all usually suck. Then again, I didn't know comcast provided a phone modem either, I thought it was all cable. Hell, my mom has the triple play package, and the phone itself actually gets fed right from the cable line(a phone port on the modem) instead of a wall phone jack.

It might be your router or the laptop.
From the netgear model, it looks like the best it can do is 802.11g.

You pretty much just need to go and see. It's all about who sold them what, so it's all down to luck on what is in stock. I've seen stuff all the way back to old Atari's from time to time in those stores. I'm sort of a poor judge on what that kinda stuff is worth, because I'm pretty sentimental with my old games. Therefore, whether the prices are any good is subjective. I will say this, though, you stand a much better chance of seeing systems themselves then you do a good selection of games. I usually always see at least some nes/snes/psx/n64's there. Check out Half-Price Books as well. Seen some neat old stuff in those stores too.

Thanks for mentioning this! I'm looking hard at ordering it because my wife is tired of not having wifi at home for her iPhone, and my daughter wants access on her PC, and I was jealously keeping the connection wired for gaming.

They already closed the 87th & Dan Ryan Best Buy about a week or two ago which was the closest one to me so never got a chance for any deals. Sad thing is this was where I got my Nintendo Wii when it was was very tough to get a hand on one. Ironically it was also where the closest Toysrus for me was before it closed & Best Buy took it over, so that location really does not have the best track record.
Funny thing is I lucked out got the last Killzone 3 Helghast Edition from the downtown Best Buy that is NOT going out of business for $24.50. The box was a little beat & book had a dent in it but the figure, helmet & game was in excellent condition. I was surprised to see that the included Helghast Edition Voucher was still good even though it said it expired 9/1/11. Awesome deal, lucky timing. :D

Quick story...this past Saturday night I went to the Galloping Ghost Arcade on Ogden in Brookfield, a sweet old school arcade run by people who care about keeping that scene alive, and was eating at an awesome thai place right down the street beforehand.
Reason this is funny is the place is ULTRA small (like 5 tables small) and people kept coming up to my wife and I and asking if we were there for the " dot com meetup for the arcade"...immediately I was like "is there a Chicago CAG meetup tonight?"
I guess it was because I was wearing a Nintendo "Who Are You?" hoodie that I got from my Game Crazy days...

Anyone here use U-verse as internet service? I am thinking of switching over from att dsl but i hear soem horrible story.
I made the switch over a year ago, and the changeover was painful to say the least. Line changes could make switching back to standard DSL or phone lines much more difficult as well (esp. after the first 30 days), and they charged several hundred dollars to upgrade the in-house wiring, too.
I like faster speeds, but that experience highlights to me why telecom companies are so hated these days.
