Chicago's Very Own thread

Hello, I am a Chicago guy so I would like to start a Chicago thread so maybe we can help each other out by letting Chicago area cheapasses find cheap deals.
:D

Okay, I am in on this, but we have to agree to share the wealth, because I have scavengered the following locations:
Ford City Target
2000 Cicero Target
South Pulaski Target
Elston Target
31st gamestop
Roosevelt/Canal Gamestop
Cermak Gamestop
Ford City Best Buy
Ford City Circuit City
Clybourn Best Buy
Clybourn Circuit City

I have quite a few penny guides up for trade as well as a few games I'd be willing to part with. in general the Targets have treated me well, but you have got to be diligent about checking the clearance rack and scanning things and asking questions...I'd be happy to post what I've got and to discuss with whoever ways to organize our cheap asses together.

Okay then. Post away bub. Lately I just go to a few stores:

Matteson Target
Matteson GAmestop
Matteson EB (sucks Horribly)
Homewood Target

But sometime I go North Riverside Mall (when I'm unfortunely broke) and fing good stuff there.

Chicago Ridge Mall's Gamestop, EB and Two indy stores. The one across the Instant Replay (I think) sells imports.

I'll think of more good to decent places.

Might be interested, but i do have a wife, a 3 year old and a two month old...so sometimes it's hard to get out if you know what I mean.

i'm a couple of blocks away from Comiskey...er make that US cellular, so downtown is no problem whatsoever...there's also Sox games this weekend as well if a bar is too...well...barry for everyone.

The Disc Replay that is right next to Best Buy in Village Crossing usually has a decent selection of used games. They give cash for trade ins and that is why so many people sell back over there. There is also another Disc Replay in Harwood Heights, right next to the Gamestop on Harlem and Lawrence. Lots of good deals if you get lucky.

I live in downtown(north) and work in the burbs so I pass by many stores.

I respect that fact that you are doing sometihng like this. it is a very good deal and I feel it does help people in the chi area to find games or not waste gas. but CAG is now going to be full of local area posts. I can see it now the san diego post, L.A., N.Y., little havana, sweet water texas, etc. great idea.

hey guys, glad to see so many people from around here. i live on the north side, and would love to get together for some gaming. i also frequent the targets, best buys, circuit citys and such around here so i might be able to help out with any questions. anyhow, i'm living with my dad at the moment, and he's going out of town for a week or so. if everyone is interested, you guys could all come over to my place this saturday night and we can get our game on. i have two good-sized tvs and all three systems, we'd just need another system and some extra controllers (and whatever games we wanted to play, obviously). let me know if there's any interest.

Hey all I'm on the northwest side and have all three systems, couple controllers for each and all teh current mutli games. I'd be up for a lan party any time soon. rocksolidaudio

everyone who has posted in this thread should have received the following PM:

"hey, i dunno if you've checked the "chicago's very own" thread recently, but i'm inviting everyone from the area over to my place (north side of chicago, near lincoln square) this saturday evening/night to play some games. i figure we'll do halo and mario kart:dd at a minimum, assuming people can help me out by bringing some of the hardware and such. we can all throw down a couple bucks too and get some pizza/beer (for those over 21)/whatever, and people are welcome to stay as late as they want or crash on my floor. i'm sending this same PM to everyone who has posted in the thread, but feel free to forward it to anyone else from the board you know is from the area. so i guess let me know if you're interested so i can get some idea of if enough people can come to make it worth organizing. please RSVP in a PM, but post in the thread too regardless so that everyone can discuss this more openly. i'll post all the exact info in the thread once i have a better idea of what's going on and who's coming. thanks. i hope this ends up happening, it should be fun.

-nick

p.s. we could all bring some games we want to trade and do a swap meet of sorts as well."

so, yeah, let me know.

I'd rather not start sending out my info to everyone just yet, because I don't know if it's happening for sure or not. I'd like to have a minimum of, say, six people to make it worth the trip for everyone.

So far, we have, for sure:
myself (regular Nick)
BigNick
Johnny Polychronopoulos

Seemingly probable:
scdoanintendo

Possible:
Battousai1002
flybrione

So, once at least six people have RSVP'ed for sure I'll post all my info in this thread. I figure we can start at 7 p.m. (if that works for everyone) and go until whenever, any other suggestions are welcome. So spread the word, let's make this happen!

The town of Matteson sucks. I had money at a bank there that i was getting out because the money matured. The woman was black, and she was a complete racist to me. She did not treat with me any respect and was totatally rude to me. I am ALWAYS respectful in the place of business, so I KNOW that I did not do anything to make her mad. Just thinking about her really upsets me.

we had three CAGers show up, so four total including me. flybrione brought 2 of his pals, and i had 3 of mine there. we played halo about 99% of the time, deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. pizza and beer were also consumed at some point during the evening.

there is a place on Harlem and Montrose on the northside that carries games for all systems that ever existed.

NEO-GEO - Turbo Grafx - Vectrex included! :D

They can be a little pricey on some items but on others they have some good deals. The last time I was there I was very tempted to buy a sega master system complete plus they had a bunch of games available for it.
Complete with cases and instructions.

They also have many old consoles and games available.

The store is called

VideoGames Etc.
4351 N. Harlem
Norridge, IL 60706

Store hours are 11-9pm Mon-Sat
12-6pm Sun

If you'd like the Phone number PM me and I'll send it you.
I grabbed one of there business cards the last time I was there.

I know there's a Disc Replay in Chicago. There might also be more than one store in the city, too?...

There's a place called Windy City Exchange, it's on Cicero, about two blocks south of Milwaukee. They sell new and used games, imports, systems, and pretty much everything in between. Their prices may be mostly on the high side, but if you don't want to try and outbid other buyer's on eBay, you have a good chance of finding what you are looking for at the store...

ryosnk
09-13-2004, 01:23 PM
I just checkout Disc replay in norridge and downers grove and the prices vary alot. For example I picked up robotron for $2 and the one in downers grove had it for $8. But the one in downers grove had alot of more snes and nes games. :? Also Windy city game exchange is out of business. Also VideoGames Etc. is sweet! :D

I guess it's more of a black thing LOL :D
It's called L-Town because all the streets on that part of the westside start with the Letter L. L-town is close to Oak Park. It's like Lorel, Laramie, Leamington, etc
Then it's K-town which is Kostner and all those other streets.

jaykrue
10-12-2004, 03:21 AM
I don't think that's what K-town stands for... I've known K-town as the area close to Kimball and Lawrence since it's basically where most of the Koreans in Chicago seem to live... if you want some good spicy chicken, I recommend going to the 'Great Seas' Restaurant (on Lawrence, about 2-3 blocks east of Kimball)... ask for the lollipop chicken... also if you want, you can order the spicy sauce (in hot or mild versions but I recommend the spicy) separately... goes good w/ other meat products... I get that stuff almost every week

akilshohen
10-16-2004, 09:21 PM
Then it's 2 K-towns. I forgot about the Korean thing. But when I'm at a BSU (Black Student Union)
meeting at my school, it's this teacher always talking about how his uncle was a drug dealer and a pimp in K-town and now he has about 10 children.

Hello guys,

I live in the South Side (Oak Lawn)

I figured I'd help the thread out a little bit. There are a few places that I know of. Here is one place for now.

-----------------

Highscore (95th and Ridgeland Ave.)
Although some prices are a little bit on the high side, this store is great. They have everything you might be intrested in. Vintage, imports, rare accessories .. etc. Here are a few things I picked up the last month:

Sega CD/Genesis combo Model 1 in mint condition with two controllers and any 4 CD games 14.99 or less. They still have one more for 79.99

Star Ocean: The 2nd Story (Brand New PSX) for 29.99
I believe they have one more

Tales of Destiny 2 (Brand New PSX) for 29.99

Gradius III & IV (Mint used PS2) for 9.99

Used XBOX with three month warranty at the store for $100

I am sure you will find what you need. They have DVDs, Anime, Domestic games for most systems, DC Imports, PS2 Imports, Saturn Imports, NEOGEO, NEOGEO Pocket, LYNX, All the vintage Ataris, Posters, Wallscrolls, Gundam figures, trading cards, arcade sticks..........

-------------

Also if you are into the rare games like shooters and fighters, you might wanna check out the GameCrazy special order. You can order any game and they locate it at any store nationally and ship it for 6 bucks. It usually takes about a week to get a game. They also run for alot less than what you pay on ebay. I also had luck with the gamestop website.. I just search for a game I want and check if any store around me has them. I made a hefty amount of money getting games like Power Stone 2, MVC 2, GigaWing 2, Bangai-O, Mars Matrix, and Project Justice for DC. Not to mention the other platforms.

So good luck on your hunt

I posted this over in the VF4/Target/YMMV thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=517490#517490) already, but I figured that this might be the place to post for a Chicago-area deal. Here goes...

I've been looking for a cheap copy of VF4:Evo in the Chicagoland area (north side, preferrably) for a while now. I was originally looking to get in on the (thru Saturday/today) B2G1 free deal at TRU (along with Guilty Gear for the Xbox and maybe another $20 game... like Soul Calibur II or Xenosaga), but if the game's really $5 at local Target stores, then I'm be all over it. I'll try calling a store early Saturday, but I was wondering: the Target web site still lists the game as $19.99, so is there any chance I can still get it that cheap in-store? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Oh yeah, and does anyone know if a Chicago-area TRU still has any copies of VF4:Evo in stock? I'll call, but I'm not sure if they'll check other store locations for me or not.

Dang it, I still gotta get me a LE. Anyone know of any decent (trade-in?) deals for this coming week? Blockbuster/GameRush has got the extra $5 per game offer (for 3+ games) through this Sunday, I believe, but I haven't heard anything official from EB specifically regarding Halo 2 (except the earlier $10 trade-in deal which expired a few weeks ago).

Great news if it's true as I just ended up about $250 in BB credit as well.
One clerk mentioned GR's coming to Chicago when I was trading in some stuff but I figured he was talking out of his $#@.

Some advice to any Chicagoans trading at Blockbuster... if you put the credit on a gift card.. get one with the scratch off pin number on they back. They have ones with it and it's only good in-store while the others can be used online. The blockbuster website actually has some NEW new games for sale while the only new games I ever see in stores here are platinum hits from 1-2 years ago.

If any of y'all have been doing the Blockbuster trade in deals, you can get your credit put on gift cards that work online and order brand new games!!

Most stuff is regular price, but I just got Taiko Drum Master (with drum) for only $49.99!! Its listed at $69.99 @ Gamestop! I also ordered Donkey Konga.

If you do get the giftcards, make sure you get the ones with the scratch off stuff on the back, the ones that are in set amounts WILL NOT WORK!

Hope this helps tide y'all over til we get a Gamerush out here ;)

Went to the Best Buy on Howard (right on the Evanston/Chicago border) and picked up my CE pre-order about 10:30 or so this morning. Maybe one or two people ahead of me in line at customer service, and they were probably there for returns or exchanges. No go on the strategy guide, but I wasn't expecting that anyway. In and out, no biggie. Nice.

Hey all-- just signed up for this forum-- good to see a massive Chicago post!

All I can really add to the store list is pawnshops-- ya never know, check em regularly. I've caught some good stuff. My prized find was Tobal 2 for the PS1-- $5-- at a pawnshop in wilmette. it's a japanese import fighting game.

Speaking of which, that's where i live-- in wilmette with my folks while i go to community college. Only about a year and a half till i'm out of this boring ass town again, heh.

see ya around! :)

[quote="WeaponX2099"]Okay then. Post away bub. Lately I just go to a few stores:

Matteson EB (sucks Horribly)

Wait, wait, wait. EB in Matteson does not "suck". At least south burbs had a second choice for getting a good selection of games- and I know for a fact on the day after Thanksgiving they weren't busy at all, despite some good deals, which is a good thing- backdoor shopping through the front.

At least you don't have to wait in line, unlike the GameStop down the street. Not to mention they won't give you "elite" attitude.

Not sure if anyone realized, but Reckless Records buys and sells used games. There's one on 3161 N.Broadway that has a pretty good selection. On sunday, they had a Zelda OoT GC disc for $25 and Morrowind for $10, among a bunch of other games. there's also one on 1532 N Milwaukee(Near North Ave. + Milwaukee, by the Double Door) that doesn't have much. There is a pawn shop down the street from it though, that has a lot of games too-- all at an even $15.
Reckless keeps up with their prices, so they know when they have a rare game and price it accordingly, but you can find some really cheap ones too. On top of that, they have a TON of used DvDs and are the best music shops in the city, I highly recommend Reckless records.

Btw, if anyone can help me out-- I'm desperately searching for Xenogears and a Zelda 4 in 1 promo disc for gamecube...if anyone finda one of these at a decent price and wants to help me out, i'd really appreciate it! :)

Yeah it's right on montrose and harlem. I been there a couple of times. They have quite a selection. Vintage systems, sealed DC and PSX games, and a really good industrial resurfacer are some of it's pros.

BTW, does anyone here rent games online? What's the fastest and best service for IL.

Well, it's not quite "in" Chicago, but the arcade in the Golf Mill mall (next to JC Penney?) has a few machines for sale, though the owner doesn't want to part with them for cheap. I just went two nights ago, and it was the first time I'd been to an arcade in years.

Chicago Ridge Mall has a new name!!!...

I went to Chicago Ridge Mall yesterday (January 7th) and, to my surprise, it has a new name. Right when you walk in [the Eatery], there's a message on the door that reads: "Chicago Ridge Mall is now Westfield Shopping Towns". I was like "WTF!!!!". I admit, I was pissed. I was JUST there on Sunday (January 2nd) and it was still called "Chicago Ridge Mall". So whatever they did happened in just 5 days, maybe less! I'll never get used to saying "Westfield Shopping Towns". I'm still pissed. Oh well, times change. Just thought I'd let fellow Chicago [area] gamers know about it.

Made some rounds this past week of FYE/Coconuts and so far the only one closing I've seen is the Saturday Matinee at Old Orchard.

Checked and still going....

Golf Mill - FYE
Rand Road - FYE
Harlem/Irving - FYE
North Riverside - FYE
Cermack/Harlem - Coconuts
Lake/Harlem - Coconuts
Diversey/Sheffield - Coconuts
Randolph/Wabash - Coconuts (Slim model PS2 in stock!)
Belmont/Kimball - Coconuts
53rd St/Lake Park - Coconuts

Meant to check the FYE at Ford City but it blew up - They phased out games few months back anyway so no bother.

If anyone wants to post other stores that are still going, I'd appreciate it.

Videogame Exhibit Debuts at Chicago Museum
Press Release
Feb. 15th, 2005 10:55 am
Game on: The History, Culture and Future of Video Games, will make its North American debut at the Museum of Science and Industry on March 4, 2005. This major exhibition explores the vibrant world of video games from 1962 to today and the effect that these games have had on our contemporary culture.

In an interactive environment full of projected sights and sounds, Game On details the game design process, including conceptual drawing, character design and sound. The exhibit also investigates how geography and culture play a role in game development by examining games in Japan, the United States and Europe. A look at developments in gaming hardware— from the colossal computers of the early 1960s to the recent consoles such as Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2—helps to illustrate how content and technologies work together to create amazing new products.

Along the way, children and adults alike will be enthralled by the interactive world of gaming as they have the opportunity to play more than 125 games that illustrate the exhibit content.

Game On is powered by Exelon, proud parent of ComEd, and sponsored by EB Games and Pepsi.

“The video gaming industry has had a unique influence on the world’s culture,” said David Woody, the Museum’s director of design and development. “Visitors to Game On will discover how the video game phenomenon emerged from both an artistic and technological perspective, not just in the United States, but around the globe. They will also be able to see how that phenomenon has influenced other aspects of popular culture, including movies, magazines and music.”

Game On runs through September 5, 2005. The exhibit consists of 17 “levels” or areas, each one introduced by a different member of the “Game Family”—a mother, father, sister and brother who take museumgoers through an exhibit tour. As guests move through the exhibit, they will discover the key creative people who make games happen, including graphic designers, programmers, 3-D modelers and engineers. The illustrations of Chicago artist David Lee Csisko will bring the Game Family and the exciting, pulsating world of video games to life with a flurry of color, movement and characters.

“Game On gives kids a new view of an industry that has come to the forefront of our popular culture,” said Jean Franczyk, the Museum’s vice president of Education and Guest Services. “Many children today have grown up with video games, but now they have a chance to learn about the history, science, art and technology that is behind those games.”

In Level 1: Early Games, guests will learn about the genres first games. The area features the 1962 game SpaceWar!, the first game to be developed on a computer with a vector monitor; 1972’s Pong; and rare artifacts such as original publicity materials and early merchandise.

It takes up to 40 people to build and market a successful game, and in Level 4: Making Of, guests will learn why. The game design process from concept drawing to packaged product will be examined in this area, focusing on some of the most important games of recent times including the Pokémon phenomenon and Tomb Raider. Each display will include original artwork of character sketches and environmental designs.

How does sound and music enhance the game experience? Level 9: Sound will explore early music from the 8, 16 and 32-bit eras, sound effects and composed music for games. Visitors will be able to play games that have made music their theme including Rez and Space Channel 5. Additionally, this area looks at how game developers and publishers are now showcasing new bands and artists in their game titles, and even hiring film composers to write game soundtracks. Guests will be able to listen to tracks that illustrate this music.

Level 10: Chicago Style will demonstrate Chicago’s role in the video game world, which has been significant ever since Midway Games starting publishing arcade games in the mid-1970s, including Space Invaders in 1978 and Pac-Man in 1980. Guests can play games like Incredible Technologies’ Golden Tee Live, 2005 from these native developers.

A range of emerging technology and content trends will be showcased in Level 14: Future Games, indicating the shape that gaming may take over the next decade. This section will include Japanese “communication games,” PlayStation 2 USB camera technology—a revolutionary new type of games interface from Sony— and the latest 3rd generation phone technology.

Game On was organized by Barbican Art Galleries, London in collaboration with the National Museums of Scotland. The exhibit will have an additional charge of $5 per guest. To ensure a positive experience for all ages, Game On will not feature any mature (“M” rated) game content.

It says that the RSVP must be sent from the same e-mail address that originally received the invitation.

The funny thing is that I don't buy too much from EBGames, I occasionally buy some rare classics from their morning updates but I'm usually miss out on the better games. Buy some games and maybe you'll get an email invite as well.

Hope to see some local CAGs there!
