First off, Fucking Hastings is on my fucking Hit-list. Chronicles of Riddick, which I bought from them "new" during some deal awhile back, is now stuck in my Xbox. This supposedly new game , which has sat on my shelf for months, came shrink-wrapped, not original wrap. There was a fingerprint on the disc and sticky residue on the top of the disc.

When I tried to take the disc out of my Xbox, it won't leave. The tray opens, but the disc is GONE. Apparently stuck to the inner surface of the drive. I tried putting another disc in, but it won't read with 2 discs in the same drive. Chronicles of Riddick is all I can play. While I'm sure it's a good game and all, I need variety.

So I'm screwed with Hastings, because its been at least 90 days since I traded for the game (did one of those trade 3, get 1 deals). And my Xbox is going to be useless unless I can figure some way to open the drive myself. I'll contact Microsoft support as a last resort, since I'd rather not pay to ship my Xbox.

Anyone know anything about how to open a Halo edition Xbox without doing any lasting damage?

You'll void your warranty, but its easy. There are screws under each of the 4 rubber pads on the bottom, and two underneath stickers. After that, take the top off.

For detailed instructions, you might check out http://www.xbox-scene.com

To remove the screws on the bottom of the xbox you will need a torx 20 screwdriver, then you can take off the top. Then you can unplug the cords from the back of the dvd drive and remove it. Check out this site for help on taking apart the dvd drive http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_repair.htm

Try a putty knife? They're pretty thin, maybe you can get it in the tray while its shut and pry the game down.

How much has to be done on the inside of an Xbox before Xbox Live becomes impossible?

Is the line drawn at installing a modchip?

Yeah, it's really easy to do once you are familiar what's plugged in where.

Thanks for the help everybody. unctennis' link (www.llamma.com) had the best directions, but with a little probing I knocked the disc loose and eventually was able to pull it out using tweezers, a couple flat screwdrivers and a mini-maglite. thirty minutes. Game is now useless. Xbox plays fine.

Note scratches along bottom, next to a new thumbprint.
