I was under the impression if you beat storymode on any difficultly level just once, with any character you would unlock a costume.
Similarly, if you beat storymode, with say, Ein, you would unlock an extra character.
I have now beaten story mode several times with different characters, and have yet to unlock an extra character or costume.
Is there some special trick like cannot skip cutscenes, cant press start when the credits roll or otherwise to that effect which must been done besides just beating storymode?

you can only get so many costumes at each difficulty level. You also need a DOA 3 save to unlock Hitomi, beat it with Leon to unlock bayman....this place has it all--

The thing is, 0 costumes have been unlocked. For argument sake, having beaten storymode, on easy, with Ayane, I should get 1 costume. So that afterwards I could select costume 1, 2 or 3.
However, after beating storymode on easy once with Ayane, no costume is unlocked and I can still only select costumes 1 and 2.
which doesn't make any sense.

Weird...try beating it on normal and with other characters first. A lot of people have had a hard time unlocking stuff in this game for some reason.

The number of costumes per character is staggering so far, and I just got the game last night.
I've unlocked every costume.
Make sure you're not screwing around with the options - set them back to default, except for the difficulty. If you mess with some things, such as the difficulty bar, it wont let you unlcok the costumes.

like hundred fifty to 200 costumes-- i think, haven't counted. each feamale character has about 15- 20 costumes, each male has 7-14. 3 unlockable characters and no unlockable stages.

If you're talking about DOA2:U, you'll save a ton of time by unlocking all of the costumes through survival mode, as opposed to beating the game like 150 times. Check www.gamefaqs.com for the details on that.
Yes, survival mode is a lot quicker!

oh yeah...forgot about that too-- spend like 4 hours instead of 100. though the 4 hours are quite agonizing

yes, this is the trick, both for costumes and for characters (since you have to unlock the 3 characters to collect everything, right?)

yep. to add to all the costumes being unlocked, you get the extra costumes for DOA 3, a CG gallery from DOA:Volleyball, and the Icons episode on Team Ninja(proof that developers aren't as pretty as the girls they create, if there ever was an argument on that)

How on earth do I get all 66 items?!?!?! There are like 10 spaces still left over for stuff in the collection, and I swear to God I've played with every character (except hidden ones) through Survival like 10 times. What do I need to do!?

Ah, I unlocked Bayman and played with him and got his three items. How do you unlock Tengu and Hitomi?
