That's your only option for now. They will start showing the series on Cartoon Network this fall if you can wait that long. If not you may be able to find someone to burn the episodes to DVDs and send them too you, for a price. Or you could just read the manga.

Yes, but it's a very long series and importing them is not a very practical thing to do, it will probably get real expensive real fast and I'm not entirely sure they are subtitled in english. To be honest I'd just wait for it to hit R1 DVD and TV in the fall.

But seriously, I haven't seen any of it mainly because it is so long. Not that that is an automatic "this anime must suck then" but there are lots of other series I have been wanting to see that are shorter. So I usually go with those first.

Fansubs. As already said before, it'll show up on Cartoon Network. HOPEFULLY, they won't mangle it as bad as I suspect they will. I'm fairly sure the ninja techniques will change names. They're not going to use Kage Bushin No Jutsu but something stupid like "Ultra Doppleganger Technique!" It loses its dramatic 'oomph' when using mangled English. Don't expect Region 1 DVDs to show up until at the very least by Xmas. Getting imports will ultimately be more expensive as well as badly translated. Sadly, I feel that the fansubs are better translated than the Region 1's as they're made by fans who actually care about translating instead of doing it for money. If you don't mind waiting a week to finish DLing each episode, then Bittorrent is the only way to go at this point. Your only other option is to wait for CN or the DVDs. Don't bother with the imports; they're not worth it.

I see this argument all the time...I feel a very solid majority fansubs are done by amatuers and are poorly translated at best. Leaving in things like honorifics and whatever doesn't make is a better translation. Often times it will barely be a stone's throw close to what the character means because it'll be some hacked up direct dictionary translation. It's not phrased properly when translated into english because fansubbers rarely pay attention to context (which is key to most any language but especially Japanese), and if they do they over exxagerate putting in what they think anime fans want to hear (like the needless addition of constant fucking swear words). Not to mention all the diffeent groups each which rush through and produce and different translation just so they can number one or whatever. There maybe a handful of good ones, but the time of poor studio translations and 3 year waits on liscensing have passed and fansubs are often in the wrong more. To be honest, if anime wasn't a medium that existed out of the East, we'd probably see a lot bigger crackdown on piracy and fansubbing like we have here with movies and music. Of course, I'm not a Japanese scholar or anything so that's just my opinion after looking at various independent facts.

Edit: Also I have to admit I don't watch that much fansubbed stuff now (or rather any), so perhaps I'm focusing too much on the older ones like when they started fansubbing Kenshin...which I shudder at the thought of...

When I was asking about the DVDs being released in Japan I was talking about official DVDs released in Japan and not HK bootlegs with English subtitles. I already have a fair number of region 2 DVDs. The ones I have don't even have English subtitles which would be nice but not totally needed since I'm learning Japanese and planning to get my degree in it. Some Japanese DVDs do have English subtitles but most do not.

there are people who are willing to burn their fansubs to dvd and mail them to you, provided you pay for the cost of the dvd and shipping. Just make sure they are sending you the ANBU/AONE versions, since the others all suck. I think the guy that talked about things getting really expensive was referring to the fun trend of 3 eps per CD, which I wouldn't really risk for an anime I haven't even seen. Definitely download the manga (which your connection could handle) before buying anything.

Some groups are better than others at translations. Most of the worse ones can be found on dvd rips, and by groups that try to come out with new episodes first. You can find groups for some shows that take the time to do it, but you'll have to wait longer for episodes to come out. The official subtitles on the DVD's are usually good.

Japanese is a strange language. It relies a lot on how one person is related to another and leaving honorifics in show how close they are to each other. Let's say you have a guy (Naruto) and a girl (Sakura). If the guy was to say, 'Hi Sakura-chan!', he's showing his affection for her. Same situation in reverse if she says 'Hi Naruto-kun!'. Now if they were fairly intimate (doesn't have to be sexually) and showing respect to each other, they would call each other by their names alone. The -san suffix is to denote respect for your elders or superiors. Sometimes they also use old archaic versions such as -sama (male) or -dono (female). So I think that they're doing right by using the honorifics because they're something that CAN'T be directly translated. Using "sir" or "ma'am" is not the same since it doesn't convey the same amount of respect and tone.

If you check out a lot of current fansubbing, a lot of the groups currently include cultural and/or contextual notes (before or during the show) on a particular saying so you can understand what meaning is being conveyed by a particular situation. As for the swearing, well, when you hear zakkenayo! or bakayaro! (forgive the spelling) that's pretty much saying 'fuck!' or 'shit!' but I haven't seen any recent example of overusage of expletives.

Well, in this particular case that's not true. The earliest Naruto speed subbers were admittedly bad but then they started getting weeded out and now only Dattebayo is left and I think their translations are well done (for a speed group). My own procedure is DL the Dattebayo subs to watch and delete and then save the ANBU/AonE versions (for the highest quality).

There maybe a handful of good ones, but the time of poor studio translations and 3 year waits on liscensing have passed and fansubs are often in the wrong more. To be honest, if anime wasn't a medium that existed out of the East, we'd probably see a lot bigger crackdown on piracy and fansubbing like we have here with movies and music. Of course, I'm not a Japanese scholar or anything so that's just my opinion after looking at various independent facts.

The time of poor fansub translations have also passed and although there are still many bad fansubbers, they are weeded out by popularity and/or attrition (nobody DLs their version). And in this particular case, the longtime wait still exists. Naruto started about 3-4 yrs ago. Since they crank out approximately 28-30 episodes per story arc and (at last count) are at episode 132, they've already gone through about 3 yrs of material (maybe less since their TV seasons are different from the US).

Yeah, Kenshin (and even worse DBZ and a lot of old skool anime for that matter) did suffer from bad translations. But you gotta remember also that fansubbing was in its infancy. Of course there are going to be bad quality and/or translations but more often than not, it isn't the case today.

I think Shonen Jump's name will be attached to it, so I would figure the translation would probably be similar to what you see in the translated manga.

The names of the attacks will be Americanized ie. instead of Kage Bushin no Jutsu it'll be Mass Clone Doppelganger Technique!

They'll probably also have to get rid of Naruto's harem jutsu, remove half the scenes with Jiraiya and give Tsunade a severe breast reduction. Also it'd be interesting to see how they handle Haku.

It all depends on where in Toonami it gets placed. Toonami airs Saturday nights starting at like 7 and running through 11. So if it gets placed towards the end, where Kenshin used to be, it might be okay for them to leave more blood and such in. I doubt it'll get that time slot, but still...

EDIT: And as for names, I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure not only were the characters' names in Kenshin left alone, they also left all of their techniques' names alone. I'm not a hundred percent, but I'm pretty sure they left the original names.

I guess referring to mme from earlier...Guess he didn't notice the part where I said don't really watch them anymore (unless I really want to see something and have no other way to do so, which is rare and 2 or 3 epsodes tops). And I don't totally dislike fansubs, I just don't think they are any better than the studio's work anymore (and distributing them is technically illegal, but so are lots of things living via the internet). I don't even watch Naruto right now (read it though :lol: ), it's just an opinion that's all...
