From Tom's Hardware... (http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050501_125730.html)
"Now here's a major technical fumble of the kind you don't see every day: Sony launches the PSP worldwide, touting its 802.11b support, and only includes WEP support! As you know if you read our Wi-Fi blackpaper (or if you've been paying any attention at all to wireless news for the past few years), WEP is garbage. Someone clever commented in a Sony message board thread about this issue that WEP is so insecure and fast WEP-cracking utils are so widespread and easy to use, that it's almost like there's a Ron Popeil product out that'll do it for you."

Dun dun dun...
What does this mean in laymans' terms? Could somebody hack/corrupt your PSP from afar?

lol. ok, then don't ever use the free internet at airports, schools, and coffee shops. They are *gasp* unsecure.
And yea, PSP has alot of sensitive information in those packets. Geez, once those hackers get their hand on a Wipeout data, they could potentially know what you call your PSP AND how fast you were driving in Wipeout. Pretty soon, Wipeout po-po will be knocking at your door. I DEMAND privacy about those things.

I think the complaint is that if you want to use your PSP at home, you have to leave your home network less secure than the techies would like.

Yeah, from my understanding PSP to PSP isn't a problem. But using a PSP with other wireless networks is.

I have to switch from secured WPA to unsecure WEP at home to play online with my PSP, which is pretty dumb and makes me feel uneasy.
I've gone as far as hooking up a second wireless router (thats configured to block all access to my intranet pcs) and only allow the PSP to go online.
And that's not even secure, if I leave that router on, someone could crack the key in half an hour and steal my internet.

This will just serve to increase the popularty of equipment that allows the creation of a security exception list based on MAC address. While it isn't difficult to clone and spoof a MAC address it would require that they be listening while the PSP is in use, which narrows the period of opportunity.

Duh, Sony is just going to release an add-on that you'll have to pay another $50 for later to "fix" the problem :)
