I know everyone has been talking about the possible Xbox 360 console designs and the pictures from ourcolony.com - but has there been speculation on the PS3 design? I've found a few pics myself (some are obvious artist concepts):
Concept art:

This picture I've seen in "Video Store" (now Home Media) magazine:

And this one is my personal favorite. It's sleek and sexy:

Anyone know if any of these are actual prototype PS3 consoles?

Playstation is a familiar brand name no reason to change something when it works. Hell, Nintendo went from NES to Super NES that didn't make it any less cool. Gameboy's had the same name with added subtitles for 10 years still one of the most beloved handhelds in existance.
A so called "original name" dosen't make it better just harder for none gamer parents to recognize when they go to buy games for their kids.

Let's test that theory:
Nintendo
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
Gamecube
Gameboy
Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance
Gameboy Advance SP
Nintendo DS
Hmm, I see a pattern in there somewhere.
I dont care what it looks like. I want a boring black system that I can stack in my entertainment unit.

Let's test that theory:
Nintendo
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
Nintendo Gamecube (officially) Or Gamecube Nintendo... depending who you ask.
Gameboy
Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance
Gameboy Advance SP
Nintendo DS (The DS isn't a Gameboy!!!!! Just because it plays gameboy games and its portable doesn't mean you can call... it... err.... yeah, what a weak ass arguement there Nintendo... )
Hmm, I see a pattern in there somewhere.

I think the first three are garbage, but the fourth one doesn't look too bad. Of course, you can't see all of it. The last one is OK, but nothing special.

Let's test that theory:
Nintendo Entertainment System - NES
Super Nintendo Entertainment System - SNES - Super
Nintendo 64 - N64 - 64
Nintendo GameCube -GameCube - GC - GCN
Gameboy - GB
Gameboy Color - GBC
Gameboy Advance -GBA
Gameboy Advance SP - SP
Nintendo DS - DS
Hmm, I see a pattern in there somewhere.
Proper Edit
So, they use their company's name and the Gameboy name, but at least they don't use Gameboy, Gameboy 2, Gameboy 3, ad infinitum.
And the use of the company's name is an offense that all are guilty of. Sure, in conversation I would say, "Let's play Playstation", but if I were to go buy one it would say 'Sony Playstation'.
I also included the common use names for the Nintendo systems, and the only ones that overlap are GB, GBC, GBA and NES and SNES (although personally, I always say Super).

A better example would have been Sega. Their systems had the coolest names around.

Well, they had the most different. Some were cool, but others (DreamCast? Don't get me wrong I love the Dreamcast, but it is a shitty name) were very middling.

I thought the Dreamcast was cool name considering what was out there at the time. The name Playstation was bland and N64 was unimaginative. But I guess it's subjective. Sometimes I wonder had they made another console, what they would have called it. I guess we'll never know.
So, they use their company's name and the Gameboy name, but at least they don't use Gameboy, Gameboy 2, Gameboy 3, ad infinitum.

Still, I figure just about anything is a better name than Xbox 360.
In my opinion the worst shape is that mushroom-ish Ps3. What I liked about my old Ps2 was that I used it to stack my N64 and GCN on it, and seeing as I have limited space, something as abnormally shaped as that would really screw over my console space. I hope that Sony just goes with a squattish, black utilitarian box. I mean, if you want a flashy case to play games in, waste your money on a fancy PC.

Actually if you look at sony's design mentality it'll probably have a similar design to the PSP(and no, I dont mean a huge screen in the middle... but maybe that's where the disks will go and it'll probably be black with silver highlights). Basically I say this because that most recent PS3 fake (http://engadget.com/entry/1234000563038640/) had one thing going for it, that it was actually based on the shape of one of Sony's digicams. Also if you look at the DVD remote it also shares a similar shape to the PSP, a rectangle with rounded ends.
But this depends on whether they feel they've exhausted the desogn possibilities of this general shape and want to move on to something else like they did going from the original Playstation to the Playstation 2.
