They are both playing tonight in the city (I think). I can't be in 2 places at the same time... or can I? Who would you go see?

The Mars Volta, but I am saying that just because I am a huge fan of At the Drive-in and The Mars Volta. I never really liked Sparta that much.

Depends on your mood. If you feel like rocking, go see Mars Volta. Although I have to say that when I saw them two years ago, I noticed that their style didn't carry over so well in an arena, especially since everyone was there for the Chili Peppers. If it's a smaller venue though, where people are there to see them, it should be good. But if you're feeling a little more low key, go check out the Decemberists. I will be doing so later this month (yay!)

I would say Mars Volta, but I haven't heard very good things about their live shows. But I love their music so I would still go.

The Decemberists...I personally hate the Mars Volta (although loved At the Drive In) while the Decemberists are a great band. My friend saw Mars Volta and said that they yelled at the audience for singing along because they didn't "understand" the songs...pretentious assholes if you ask me.

Haha, that sucks.... although probably true... their lyrics are so out there they could be interpreted in so many different ways.

Ditto. Haven't heard the Decemberists yet (but will soon), but I have to choose them simply because of the amazing awfulness of the Mars Volta.
Seriously, every time you give the Mars Volta money, baby Jesus cries blood.

I've given them enough money to float myself to the moon on a sea of baby Jesus blood...
...and that is beautiful.

As much as I enjoy their albums, the Mars Volta is horrible live. See the Decemberists.

Decemberists
I have to go with the Decemberists. I saw them when they came to town, and it was a fun show. they sounds great live (no downgrade from the album) and some songs like The Bagman's Gambit and Mariners Revenge song were awesome live.
The Mars Volta are good too....well, lemme rephrase, Deloused in the Comatorium was good, Frances the Mute really kinda blew.....too much filler. That and I have heard Mars Volta are pretty much assholes at their concerts, once kicking kids with cameras that were taking pictures of them on stage.
Plus, the Decemberists are probably my most favorite band to come along in the past 5 years or whatever its been, so I am biased.

The Decemberists. Mars Volta isn't even as good as At the Drive-In, so why skip the Decemberists to see them
