View Full Version : Hot Shots Golf?

I saw this today at CC. I need to pick a game to get for $29.99 using the GR trade-in deal, and was thinking of this. Anyone here got it yet? The only golf game I've ever played is Mario Golf on Gamecube and GBA. I like those quite a bit. Don't know anything about the Hot Shots series though. I am definitely NOT interested in the "realistic" golf games - but it looks like this might be more in the Mario vein...

If you enjoyed Mario Golf, you'll enjoy Hot Shots Golf. They're very similar in swing meter, physics, and fun. It's gotten great feedback and should be right up your alley. Enjoy.

Yep...the fact that both were made by the same developer (Camelot) is probably why they're so similar. :)

I love both Mario Golf and Hot Shots Golf (mainly the original).

It's got an 80 rating at metacritic, which is pretty good (5 reviews that range from 70 to 85). Don't care TOO much about scores, but the average of several reviews is at least some measure of quality. Now I'll actually go read some of them to see if it's something I'd like, but sounds promising so far. Hopefully my Gamerush will decide to carry it - they aren't going to get Pac-Pix for some reason (yet have 10 Atari Retros!).

Well, I have to mention that Camelot only made the first HSG for PS1 ($4.99 at EBgames.com). But Clap Hanz, the current developer for the series, has done a good job in keeping the gameplay consistant with the high standard that Camelot set with their work on the original HSG. So, even with the new developer, they're still very similar.

I like Hot Shots Golf more than Mario Golf. It seems to have a little more to it overall. Although I started with the Hot Shots series first and I didn't spend much time at all with Mario Golf. I got the PSP version yesterday though and it is great. The graphics are beatiful and load times are very short.

Hot Shots Golf is one of my favorite series'. I've played all the games and they are much more fulfilling than most golf and other sports games in general.

Buy it...

Good to hear that the loading times are short. Tiger Woods PSP has ungodly loading times.

Hot Shots Golf (particularly 3 and Fore!) are the best golf games I've ever played. They have incredibly realistic physics engines and yopu really get a sense of accomplishment after chipping in from 150 yards, sinking a long putt or getting to the green in 2 on a par 5. I still play Fore! at least once a week and I always pop it in when I'm looking for a 20 minute video game fix. I'm seriously contemplating buying a PSP just for this game so I can play it whereever I go. If you liked Mario Golf (I did but it doesn't touch HSG, IMO) you will most definitely like HSG.

Yeah that's what I don't like about THUG 2 Remix. HSG PSP is pretty quick though...even the boot up isn't that long and from hole to hole it is pretty seamless.

How many courses are there and are there mirrors too? I know it is less than Fore! but I hope it is at least as many as 3...

I moved my preorder from ATV to HSG .... and I just don't know if I want to pick it up. Besides for Lumines and MGA, I'm just not too interested in my PSP.... HSG is HSG, nothing new or innovative to the series since its pinnacle at HSG3. I don't think that I'll pick it up....time to move it to another game.

I just got the game yesterday and it is very fun. There are 6 courses to choose from, not sure about mirror yet. The best part is the amount of unlockables you can get, which keeps me coming back playing the same courses over and over and its fun! There is a challenge mode with three different challenges at a time (1 against an opponent and 2 tournament style), and they are all only 9 holes, so its great for a quick game on the go.

The graphics are just as good as HGS Fore, maybe even more so because its widescreen. It's really amazing that they got this good of a ps2 conversion on a handheld. I bought the PSP for this game and am very impressed.

I love playing HSG (which is obvious from my sig). I just got HSG4 ($20 at EB plus $20 voucher) and I'm ready to take my game online. If anybody wants some, PM me and we'll have a match.

i picked hot shots golf, and i am really dissapointed. can someone give me some tips? i find it impossible to make a putt over 20 ft. games boring IMO. if you are into the hot shots golf series, then you should definately get it. obviously im the odd man out with my opinion, so if you like the series or golf games in general, get it

I'm still debating on picking it up.

I have it preordered at EBgames from the previous trade in deals (They actually said the game would be $53.99 when I did the preorder!).

I'm debating on holding out for Tales of Eternia at the beginning of June instead.

Decisions Decisions...

Any more impressions?

You can play this online like twisted metal right?

I think that I'm with you on this one. I'll pass for now. Maybe I'll trade for it with Twisted Metal, etc.

I picked this one up and Lumines at GR today and
so far this is better than Lumines..

I've never played any Golf Game in my life and don't even know the rules..
I just bought it because the game received 8.8 from IGN.

Its only downfall is the lack of Infracture mode..
Other than that, i can stick w/ this tilll Coded Arms
or other games come out in June.

Not bad at all!

It's a really great game, the load times aren't long (around 7 seconds or so). I just have trouble putting. I get the wind confused and hit the ball in the wrong direction. It's really my fault on it, so it's not knocking the game, it's more or less knocking my gaming skills. I haven't played a HSG game since the first one on PS. The custom stuff is cool, I haven't unlocked much only won the first challenge mode.

I'd say it's worth it if you have any interest in golf and/or HSG.

Was very close to picking this up today--but i've played the heck out of Hot Shots Golf 3 for PS2, and the 6 courses/10 characters thing with HSG Open Tee just didn't do it for me.

Yeah, I have no interest in golf either, but I think the HSG series kicks ass. I can't wait until I get paid so I can pick this up.

Practice. You aren't supposed to make 20ft. putts all the time - just like playing real golf. You will get better at it though. I play a lot of 3 and Fore! and 20ft. is just about my range for a gimme - but I'm not perfect all the time either. I probably make around 90% of all putts inside 20ft. I always feel like if I did one more thing right my score would have been a stroke better - just like playing real golf and ultimately the reason that it is so addictive.

I'm playing this right now. I've always enjoyed the HSG series, and this game is no different. Its about as addictive as Lumines for me.

Even if you don't like golf in general (like me), you should at least try it out.

I thought about this too, but the courses are very well designed and all the characters can be customized extensively through the unlockable items (over 250!) so one character can be many.

My Rio is a baseball player, for example, someone elses may be a rocker.

And the courses are so well designed you won't mind there's only six.

Easily one of the best PSP games out there right now.

And to whoever said Tales of Eternia is coming in June? Prove it. I can't find it on any website. Maybe you meant Ys 6 instead?

I own both and it really depends on your taste..

If you loved diablo and do nothing but collect items and sell,
UL is the game for you. Im loved diablo but this game gets bored once you beat it.
And its same thing over and over and over..

W/ HSG, its a sports game w/ lots of unlockables, this would last more.
Personally i recommend this over UL..

"so far RR owns all"

I got HSG:Fore the other day due to EB's mail in rebate. I had been debating getting it for a few weeks since I bought 3 a long time ago for my PSX and enjoyed it a bit, but eventually hit a point where I just sucked too much to get any further. Not seeing that problem as much in Fore so far as I've been able to go under par consistently on a number of the courses.

The PS2 version is great since load times are almost non-existant, the only times they're really noticable is when the entire course is loading.

If I had a PSP this would definately be a game I'd love to have on there.

I'm impressed with this game, it's ALOT of fun!!!

Putting is hard in the beginning but I'm getting the hang of it.

All in all a good buy, This is one of my favorite games now, I love how you can pick it up, play 1 hole then just shut it off and continue where you were next time.

Also the load times ROCK, there is like an 8s load time for a whole 18 hole course and that's it.
