Well, considering the article says the Lon Johns took out insurance I think they got a hell of a lot of free publicity. They might be the ones making out like bandits. They are only out the cost of insurance.

Apparently they estimated people would eat 2 plates max, but most were eating 3-4.

This doesn't sound near as bad as that promotion. (Depending on how much one battered jumbo shrimp costs LJ. Are they really jumbo shrimp or a bunch of tiny shrimp 'pasted' together to form a fake jumbo shrimp shape?) Anyway, most people will probably end up ordering something extra as well I guess. (Like a drink.) Although 2-5 isn't really eating time for many people.

Pretty sneaky.
I guess it's actually pretty good business sense.
Their slow hours are probably 2-5. So they'll either have people who would normally come in 11-2, or 5-8, come in at a different time which should slow down the 'rush hours'. Or they'll get people in for 'a' free shrimp, and most likely very few people would go into a restaurant just for a free shrimp, without buying at least a beverage or order or fries or something. Which means they're giving away, what, 30 cents worth of shrimp, but they now have a 1.00-5.00 sale they didn't have before. And the free shrimp probably falls under the advertising budget....
Mmm...LJS...we have one now, but it's about 30 min away, which is a long way for lunch [and a free shrimp].
