Thanks for the compliment. Wondered where you'd been .... wisdom teeth .... oh so long ago that I had mine out. Then again .... I'm probably the oldest one here still playing N64 ....

Don't worry about the Visa .... down to a little over $100 now so I'm making great strides all things considered. However, once I've paid it off I need to get

1. A cyan toner cartridge for my laser printer as I have 30 games in cases and no way to print covers for them at present ....
2. Some more cases as I have another 30 games needing cases from all the purchases I made for the cause. Had to sell off the game boxes to help reduce the Visa debt so they're sitting on my shelf loose at present.

After that I can start getting more games :)

Sooo little spending money vs sooo many things to buy .... sigh

Doesn't look like you would've needed to buy much right now with all of Schenley's recent purchases. I'm sure those'll keep you busy for a while.

Yeah .... I do seem to have become the defacto "Mr Convertorman" eh!!

I think I'd have been better of buying boxes than converting .... much less work involved :)

Oh well ..... while we're talking about boxes ..... here's Bassmasters 2000 ....

Still have 3 of yours to do .... Iggy's, Madden something and Ms Pacman ... all have a fair bit of work to do so they're hanging around like a bad smell. I have to be in the right mood for major editing .... don't worry though .... they will get done.......

A shiny nickel to the person that can upload Snowboard Kids 2!

You will find this is insanely difficult to find boxed in either NTSC or PAL format. Otherwise we'd have it already as the first one is one of my favorite games and I'd have got it already ..... I personally contributed both PAL and NTSC covers for Snowboard Kids (http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/gbacovers/n64_snowboardkids.jpg).

BTW .... The collecting of boxes for the purpose of creating covers relies on the efforts of everyone .... not just a few. "Ask not what we can do for you but what you can do for everyone" before making requests. It's long gone past the time where the boxes in the hands of members have been contributed. So every box that is missing requires someone having to purchase it.

If you can help by buying a game where a cover is still required .... Great .... otherwise just wait until it becomes available.

OK, more covers scanned and uploaded. www.brokenclavicle.com/covers/raw (http://www.brokenclavicle.com/covers/raw)

Since Valeman is exclusively working on the conversion, I will from now on PM or email him directly when I scan new covers - no need to make this thread any longer!

I usually check for updates on this thread. It's already excessively long, it isn't going to make much difference if it gets even longer :p

I can help by not advertising the covers I create from scans on the thread .... that'll save a few entries :)

Of course .... then you'll have to keep looking on Snack-bar to see if anything new has been added....

Alternatively ..... I could just save it until ALL the scans have been converted and just make one entry .... just expect it sometime next year when I run out of Schenley scans to convert.

Personally ... isn't this thread here for the purpose of keeping people up to date with news on the cover conversions etc? I dont care if it's 5 pages or 500... so what if it's the biggest on CAG. Just means we're a dedicated bunch .... or a seriously old bunch of no-hopers clinging onto old tech and too scared to move into the future :D

Nah .... I like the status quo ... so here's a conversion of Schen's Mia Hamm Soccer 64 .... never seen it b4 ......

That's great news from my perspective as it takes a bit of pressure off me on the conversion front.

UPDATE: Just looking at the file uploaded to Snack-bar it's only 1.6mb's ..... almost all of my conversions at 300 dpi are 5mb's or more so I had a look at his image and it's only scanned at 96 dpi.

Can you make sure he scans and uses 300dpi as this is the official requirement in the documentation. He'll need to redo the Pokemon scan too.

Cheers .....

Howdy Snowcone .... have a good 4th day off? :D Great Shuttle launch too!!

It may pay to check AJNrules scans in case he's already redone them at 300dpi. If he hasn't then they're gonna need replacing as simply upscaling resolution doesn't work very well.

Can you also have a look at Slash000's WWF Warzone (http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/gbacovers/n64_wwfwarzone.jpg). It's really crappy with blurred text on the rear along with typed over text in other blocks. As I submitted a clean US version of the box I think it would pay to delete it as I can probably get a clean replacement PAL cover and no way would someone print this one out in it's present state. Shame I didn't notice it before I sold my mint PAL box off ..... sigh

Okay. I figured out how to change the resolution of my scanner and redid the Pokemon Puzzle League box under what my scanner claims to be 600dpi, and I've uploaded it again. If it's still bad, then let me know and I'll raise the resolution once again.

I do not have the link, but Snowcone can you check it out?

Yeah. It's here: Pokemon Puzzle League (http://www.snackbargames.com/uploads/ajnrules.n64_pokemonpuzzleleague.jpg)

Yeah...it's kind of disconcerting, because for the last scan, you said it was 96dpi, but my scanner said 200, so I'm not sure where the inconsistencies come from. http://forums.nintendo.com/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Here is the new one:

1. It looks exactly the same
2. It's still 96dpi

seems like the scans are coming in at the right dpi, but he's not saving the cover as such.

seems like the scans are coming in at the right dpi, but he's not saving the cover as such.

4tygames ..... ask him if he uses Paintshop Pro ..... if he does I can provide instructions on ways around it ..... essentially if he downloads a pic from Snack-bar he can easily paste each part into a selection without affecting the 300dpi of the base picture......

I know what he MAY be doing. When he creates the 3366x2100 canvas he's not changed it from the default 96dpi in the preferences. So although he may have his scanner set to 300dpi it auto's it down to 96dpi when pasted into the canvas.

Otherwise .... if we can get the raw scan's I'll do it .... although it would be much better for the cause if someone else is also doing conversions.

Another thing .... your post looks like you are posting a new cover but then the only link is the one inside the quotes from the previous post. So ....was that correct or maybe you forgot to put in a link to the new post and we haven't seen his new corrected cover?

SMMM

also, why don't you tell AJNrules to just get an account here so we can talk to him directly?

and, I'm eyeing a box lot on ebay that's ending soon. It's 11 boxes, but only 2 that we don't have (Mystical Ninja and Monopoly, both US). But I need that Ninja box, so I'll try to win it.

edit: I won it. Finally!!!

-International Superstar Soccer 64 (US)
-International Superstar Soccer 98 (US)
-NASCAR 99 (US)
-Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey (US)

In addition, I have a couple of Japanese boxes, including Sin and Punishment, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros., Star Fox 64, Paper Mario, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Party, and Yoshi's Story. I don't know how useful they might be.

How big are the individual scans?

If you can email them in less than 5mb lots you could send them to me directly and I'll scan and up them to Snack-bar. PM me if you want to do that and I'll give you my email addy.

Alternatively .... you cold create a free login at www.box.net (http://www.box.net) where you can store individual files up to 10mb's in size. Create a directory, upload the files, make the directory public and put the link here and I can pick them up.

Thanks guys. I didn't actually scan them myself. I had a friend at work do it for me, but I just noticed he scanned them in at 200 dpi, so I'm going to pester him to redo it. He gave them to me as 8 mb tif files. Slash has already offered to format the raw scans, so you guys don't need to bother. There are a few small scratches on the boxes and some creases, but they're in pretty good shape overall. Here's the 200 dpi scans so you can see the quality for yourself:

Very nice :)

Get your friend to scan them @ 300dpi but save them as a jpg with no compression. File size should be only 2mb's approx each so much smaller.

These are nice condition so easy to convert .... although the red sticker brigade might be a tad irritable with Sin and punishment being all black .... hehe

Cool, only thing I'd change is making the little boxes on the bottom back more whitish instead of the dirty yellowish.

Just an update .....

Things are hectic at home/ work at present but I'll get those 3 remaining Schenley files up when I can get around to finishing the cleanup necessary on each of them.

I have however, scanned some 50 game manuals and have currently converted over half of them to pdf's. These are good quality 1024 x 76x sized pages, aligned, straightened up and colour corrected to remove seethru so they look very nice compared to the ones typically found online.

Due to the scan size they do take some space up as each one is 5 - 12mb's depending on the page count. Where they are PAL I have scanned the English content only. I have probably 50 still to do and when completed will take up several hundred mb's of space. Geez I hope my HDD doesn't die on me as I haven't backed them up anywhere.....

Is anyone here interested in these? I dont know where I can store them as Boxnet has a 10mb restriction on individual files and I dont want to drop the quality. I could put them on DVD/CD and post to people though if we can work out the logistics ....

Hey SMMM .... that was a quick fire mock-up. No editing of colour or cleanup was done as a result. I just put it up to show what I thought the box looked like after choppingthe spine around to accomodate the current format. I sill reckon it looks good for the 300dpi conversion.... depending on what Slash does with it of course.....

I've got the 300 dpi scans, but we were kind of rushing (end of the work day and all) and I think there may be a little bit of cropping at the edges. These boxes are ever so slightly larger than the plastic mediashelving cases everyone is using, so I'm hoping it's not too terrible. If you think it needs a rescaning, I'll do it tomorrow. It's most noticable on the front cover of Bangai-O on the left. I saved them as jpgs, but they're still pretty big (about 10 megs). I had to split up 2 of them using winrar to get them to upload to box.net. Anyway, here they are:

Hey TheValeman,

You can always make a torrent and I would be happy to seed it.

That could be a goer but ... big but ... my broadband cap sucks ass so once someone has the file I'd have to back off or I'll quickly end up capped to 64k broad-less-band.

Once I've converted the 25 or so that are scanned and just need editing/ compiling into a pdf I'll get it underway. That'll give you guys 50+ manuals ....

To date I've pdf'd the following:

007 Goldeneye, Aero Gauge, Battle Tanx - Gloal Assault, Cruis'n World, Dual Heroes, Excitebike 64, F1 World Grand Prix II, Fighters Destiny, Jerry McGrath Supercross 2000, Jet Force Gemini, Mickeys Seedway USA, NBA Jam 2000, Perfect Dark, Ridge Racer 64, Snowboard Kids, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Supr Mario 64, Tetrisphere and WCWNWO Revenge.

Scanned and ready to pdf are ....

007 - World is Not Enough, Auto Lamborghini, Banjo Kazooie, Command & Conquer, Donkey Kong 64, F1 World Grand Prix, F-Zero X, Hydro Thunder, ISS 64, Major League Baseball, Mario Kart 64, Mischief Makers, Mission Impossible, NBA Live 99, NBA Pro 99, NHL 99, Pokemon Snap, Spac Station Silicon Valley, Star Wars Ep 1 Racer, Tarzan, Top Gear Rally, XG-2Zelda - Ocarina.

And I have a truckload of others yet to do thanks to buying all those boxed games for the cover project. :D

OK .... I've taken the 300dpi scans, kept the 200 dpi spine and merged the front/ rear covers after alittle cleanup work to get ......

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/5977/sinpunishmentsmalllk2.th.jpg (http://img80.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sinpunishmentsmalllk2.jpg)

Oh ..... and the off white colour on the rear is actually a pale pink/white I think and nothing to do with the scan or conversion itself although the owner of the box may want to clarify that

The off-white is indeed off-white on the actual box. Slash has created both red and black spine versions of my scans. Here's his post from another forum:

I created the N64 covers for those games you scanned. I created each of them with both a red spine version and a black spine version, because some people like their imported games with the black spine for whatever reason.

Problem with Slash is that he's an insertion-ist. He doesn't do much color editing/cleanup on the actual scans. I'd let Valeman at least handle the Sin and Punishment, which he seems pretty excited to do.

My eyesight isn't very good, but that looks like the same off-white to me. These boxes are getting kind of old, and I bought them used off ebay a few years ago, so I don't know. I'm pretty satisfied with slash's covers, but you guys can go nuts with the color correction and whatnot. I saw someone else was going to scan Sin and Punishment. Maybe his box is better?

I wish the Japanese instructions would fit in the mediashelving cases.

That would be ideal although it may be one thing hosting covers vs game manuals to big N .... although looking at their site they themselves put up the occasional manual for download so I think we'd be safe .....

[already scanned]... Cruisn USA, Major League Baseball, NFL QB Club 98, Shadows of Empire, Rugrats Treasure Hunt

For sure. I figured since we are such perfectionists we could just do covers for everything. Standard console games would be a good start and then we could shrink the spines and make slimline versions. One thing I noticed when I talked to SMMM this morning is that apparently the PS2 covers we have might be a little narrow and not fill out the game cases. We need to check this as the 2 covers I did for GC might be wrong and I mailed the games out to CAGers last night. Thoughts?

TheValeman

I'm too busy converting N64 manuals into pdf's to do anything other than N64 stuff at present.

Plus I dont own a PS2 or XBox so no real need for DVD covers in that regard. It's hard enough covering the bill for my N64/NDS habit..... :)

What I do know is that slimline DVD cases are a bitch when converting spines to as often the writing font size alone exceeds the width of a slim case. It's almost a requirement to actually create a generic spine for these or just put up with overlap onto the front/rear.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!

I don't believe this myself but six months after ordering some PAL games that never arrived what turns up? ...... Armorines-Project SWARM PAL ...

http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/1725/amorinesprojectswarmul2.th.jpg (http://img104.imageshack.us/my.php?image=amorinesprojectswarmul2.jpg)

wow nice job valeman. Have you ever been to replacementdocs?
This is the direct link for n64 manuals, but they have other systems too. I'm also trying to remeber another site that had torrents for manuals, hmmm.

Also, I fixed ukbeats... I just deleted the whole thing and started over. This time there is no login to add pictures so anyone can just add them by going there and clicking on the album, then click "add photo" no need to login.

Yep ... been to replacementdocs but found most of the manuals were scanned at really low-res so they looked "not so good" and lots were just slammed together so the pages were not straight etc. The only hi-res one that looked good is the Perfect Dark one I have in my lot until I get a copy at which point I'll replace it.

I came to the conclusion that if we're going to document the boxes for prosperity then I may as well do the same in a consistent manner for the manuals. So I scan the manuals at 300dpi [English only], straighten and resize to 1024x7xx res, color correct and merge into a pdf. In the case of F-Zero X I also included the Operation card. And I also clean up when things need it .... so a fair amount of work is involved.

I still have around 100 more manuals to do in my present lot so it's a work in progress. If UKBeats accepts pdf's I can fire one up for you to look at :)

Note: Being tht they are 300dpi s the common screen rez 75dpi they can be quite a bit bigger .... anywhere up to 20mb's in size.

started scanning mine in and then I realized that I was doing them at 300dpi, is this still the standard or should I bump it up to 600 or somethihg higher? Not sure if some of the parameters of this project changed. Before I do them all, let me know...

Also, does anyone have a quicky and easy photoshop guide for making these covers better (saturation and contract and all that jazz... I have read the terms, but don't know how to change stuff). I have some books on photoshop, but they're so big and it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Although perhaps I should just go with paintshop pro since the guide seems pretty handy that we have. Snowcone, you want the standard cover inserts for GameCube games?

I would be in the debt of anyone who would be able to scan a non-PC Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. It's the *only* PC/GH/PH game I have that I can't find an insert for, so if someone can get a scan, I figure I can just have it printed. Anyone? :)

I use Paintshop Pro so I cant help you there .... but scan the boxes @ 300dpi and if you want me to do them drop them onto UKBeats and I'll take it from there. As far as contrast goes .... I tend to adjust manually to get the on-screen color looking as close to the box as possible so there's no one setting generally that applies in all cases....

I just got back from a week in the New Mexico wilderness. When I got home, I found the 5 n64 games I bought. These games look like they were never used and the boxes are in pristine condition except that there was like a rental sticker that was removed on each of the front of the boxes. There are a couple of boxes (F1 Pole Position and Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey 98) that suffered a little bit of damage from the sticker, but I think that can easily be repairable in Photoshop.

I will scan and get the boxes up as soon as possible.

No worries .... hope you had a good break. Recharges the life batteries eh :)

If you want me to convert them make sure you dont crop too close to the edge of the box as I prefer to clean up edges as opposed to cropping.

Note that I'm away this weekend so any converting would take place next week as I'm taking the family to see the final Lord of the Rings (http://www.tepapa.govt.nz/TePapa/English/WhatsOn/ShortTermExhibitions/LOTR.htm) and Constable art exhibitions before it closes next weekend.....

Sorry 4tygames but I wont be able to get Rush done for you as your boxes have sticker residue on them which I have to work out a way to deal with background discoloration as a result. In fact I think I may be better off scanning my box which is mint and converting that one.

The best way I have found to remove stickers from boxes & carts is to use a blow dryer to heat them up and then peel carefully. This usually allows you to remove the sticker without leaving a bunch of residue (sometimes none). You have to be careful with 'goo-be-gone' or 'goof-off' as it will take the ink off the box and the cartridge labels. Rubbing alcohol used with a paper towel is not as stong and can be used to remove sticker residue, however it will take off the ink as well if you are not careful and rub too hard (also if you soak the box with alcohol it gets soggy.... duh). ;)

Schenley
08-20-2006, 10:41 AM
I second the use of the blow dryer. I also use some tweezers to grab the sticker.

Then, if there is any residue left, I use a gel-based Goo Gone

http://www.magicamerican.com/gg_images/GGHS12_big.jpg

The Goof Off is the one that eats through a lot of stuff. The gel stuff seems to be better suited for cardboard.

Sorry about the delay getting these covers converted but:

1. 4tygames scans have sticker residue on the front of every one of them and they're big and messy .... so it takes a shiteload of editing to try and minimise the impact and ...

2. Schenley hasn't answered the question on the resolution of his scans

Hi Everyone:

Well, after many months of watching this project, I finally bought the cases and downloaded all the available covers for the games I have. Now I figure I owe something back, so I have scanned, cleaned (a lot) and made NTSC covers for:

Mission Impossible
Ready2Rumble Round 2
Destiny Fighter 2

I have purchased but have not received the following boxes:

Charlie Blasts Territory
Lode Runner 3D
Dual Heroes
Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.
I will scan them once received.

Hopefully my covers will meet TheValeman's high standards :)

Problems:

I have been unable to upload my covers to Snackbar Games... I get a timeout error. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, or if it is due to my slow (dialup) connection. The cable modem was probably the toughest giveup when we moved from the city.

Buck Bumble does not completely download, I only get about 1/3 of the cover and then it stops.

Thanks for any help.

TheValeman
08-23-2006, 04:27 PM
OK .... if you scanned the covers @ 300dpi when you created the finished product you'll find they average around 8mb's in size. You need to save the jpg with a slight reduction in quality.

In Paintshop I click on Save and there's an Options button below the SAVE button. Click on that and change the compression from 1 to 2 and see what size the file comes out at. Snack-bar (http://www.snackbar-games.com/uploadcovers.php) times out when the pic gets above 6mb's but usually for me a compression of 2 brings it down to around that size and all's well from there..... If you're familiar with all this stuff just forget/ excuse my explanation above ....

Hope that helps. Dont' worry ... a compression rate of 2-3 yields no visible difference in quality.

--EDIT-- Buck Bumble downloads fine for me. Try clearing your browser cache or use Firefox instead of IE.

Cheers for stepping up to the mark and contributing to the project. It's good to see people who benefit from the work done by us give something back to the cause.

And thanks for the nice comment :D

wshbrngr
08-23-2006, 11:45 PM
Well thanks for the help Valeman.

I was able to download Buck Bumble, clearing the cache worked.

You are correct about the size of my finished covers they are 8mb+
I do scan everything at 300 dpi. (I think that is your rule)
Photoshop gives me a similar option, so reduced the size, but they still will not upload. I am not getting a time-out. It looks like its uploading (there are a lot of bytes flying across space) but after a while, I get the 'page not found' screen on my Internet Explorer.

I may head into town tomorrow with my laptop and try using a high speed connection. They were supposed to have DSL available in our area in June, but just an empty promise so far.
After Al Gore invented the internet, he promised to get high speed to the rural areas... guess he got busy with other things.

P.S. what is the status of the manual project? I agree with you that the quality of the manuals available is pretty dismal... I am old and sometimes need the manual to figure out how to play the games. Plus, they are just nice to have.

EDIT to add: I tried to upload another, but this time I got an internal server error 500 - 'an internal server error has occured........'

TheValeman
08-24-2006, 03:39 AM
Wow ... dialup? One of the other guys here couldn't upload on dialup either due to the Server timing out from taking too long to transfer it.

I have DSL so no worries here :)

If you cant get access to a broadband cct to upload them wait until you get the other boxes, scan and convert them and maybe put them all on a CD and we'll get an address for you to send them to someone who does have DSL or cable. I live in New Zealand so it may be easier sending the disc to someone like Schenley to do the honors. You could also put the raw scans on as well in case someone decides to also have a crack .... although I think your covers will be just fine....

What I dont have currently is cases to store the carts in. Anyone got a few spares lying around?

Manuals Update? Well ..... I've now cleaned up and converted 32 into pdf at this point in time. What with Schenley and 4tygames throwing a truckload of covers to convert I'm a busy person as I'm the default cover maker at the present time. Dunno why or how that transpired but thems the breaks. No-ones complained at the quality of my work so I haven't felt the need to stand down but if anyone else wants to take the job I'm happy to step aside.

I have also got another 15 manuals scanned and just needing the pages straightened, sized etc so they can be pdf'd into a manual and I have on top of that another 50 odd manuals yet to be scanned. Hey ... I'm an old man and I need my beauty sleep too ......

When Snowcone gets me the link to upload the PDF's you'll get them as fast as I can upload them.

As for Destiny Fighter 2 - that is kind of the way it looks... maybe I have a faded box, however I just did a side by side comparison with the box and my cover and you are correct, it could stand some enhancing.

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6876/fighterdestiny2alternatekr8.th.jpg (http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fighterdestiny2alternatekr8.jpg)

The front cover was scanned by gamescanner and I think is what the front cover originally looked like. This cover isn't totally ideal as although his resolution was 300dpi it lacks a little crispness although it'll probably lookjust fine when printed.

wshbrngr's cover is great apart from the discoloration and a slightly weird moire type look on the front cover. Unfortunately, as with the Battlezone cover .... adjusting one color in Paintshop Pro can yield unpredictable results on the rest of the palette. I don't know if Photoshop has better adjustments as I haven't used it much at all. Ideally what I need to do is copy the palette from one onto the other.

Anyway .... comments from anyone appreciated and I'm certainly not knocking the original scan .... just highlighting what may be closer to the oiginal colors. Oh to have a time machine eh .....

Its kind of wierd, the waviness is really pronounced on my computer screen when looking at the cover with irfanview, but not in photoshop. I am sure there is a high tech name for this effect... or maybe a lowtech 'operator error' :)

I tried scanning it again and get the same effect. It appears to print out fine, though. I am no expert in photoshop, especially all the enhancement/filters/etc.

For some reason Bio Freaks appears to have not uploaded to Snack-bar correctly. OK, I re-uploaded Bio-F.R.E.A.K.S. and it appears to be correct. The file on my laptop was corrupted, but everything is OK now.
I also rec'd a few new boxes today, I will scan and upload them ASAP.

Cool .... I have the manual pdf'd for Dual Heroes if you now have the game but no manual.

I have converted another two manuals .... those being Armorines - Project S.W.A.R.M and Disney's TARZAN .... bringing it to a total of 34 manuals at the present time.

I'll get onto Schenley's A Bug's Life cover in a day or so .... thought I'd get a few manuals out of the way first. Still waiting on Snowcone providing an upload link for these things .... but it'll need to be robust enough to accept 20meg files without timing out .... the higher rez really increases the file size.

Hey ... that's cool giving the option of cover or manuals. Uploading 007- Goldeneye - Aus as I type this.

How are you going to display them? Might be quite streamlined to simply add a "manual" link beside the "download pic" link for each cover to save having another seperate menu .... but thats just me :)

One point .... A manual listed as Eur/Aus could probably be slapped onto any available PAL cover for that game as I dont think there is any difference between the different Pal regions to be honest ... other than possibly different additional languages .... and I only scan the English pages anyway.

Query: How does the website handle the uploads? Just asking as it seems to take quite a long time after the blue bar hits 100% before the site advises completion.

Cheers .....

UPDATE: I get a Server Error 500 trying to up a 6mb pdf to Snack-bar .... similar to one when upping large pics.

Ok .... tried it again with a 7mb pdf and it gave me a " photo not a valid image file" error.

Sizing wise .... 8 mb's is ok for testing but it'll need maxing to 25mb's or so. It may be easier to send you a CD with them on it.

On another note: I converted another 4 manuals into PDF's overnight.

I'd happily look into it in a few days time when my boxes come in the post. I prefer to tackle these things in a block of time rather than piecemeal. However, the copy you made available is scanned or saved at only 96dpi .... not 300dpi as required in the site docs .... thats why it's so small.

If you upload the full 300dpi file I'll look at it sooner rather than later. Alternately .... try and get the raw 300dpi scans up and I'll create the cover for you.... although your's looks fine bar the resolution.

I like the idea of relaunching it as a new site. It's really grown to a whole new level since it first started as a small little project here at CAG. You'd probably get more traffic due it being the main focus instead of a subsidary and it'd automatically be the largest GBA and N64 hi-rez cover database on the net. Give it some more room of its own and exposure and it'll grow even more accordingly.

Sorry, I have not replied in a while.

College has started again and free time is a little more limited. I will get the list updated soon, at least by the end of this weekend.

Those boxes that I scanned earlier I currently do not have access to, and I tried to remove the sticker on the front, but it just would not come off. Those games I bought were new old stock so even though they had all the old rental store stickers on them, they were never used.

What would be a good name for the new site? Personally, I like http://www.covers.vg .

Dont forget to migrate the ftp server for those manuals I'm uploading too as it certainly made it easier than the html method where large files are concerned.

Are you migrating the existing layout?
This may be a good time to look at altering the format to a name based structure .... one name with all associated covers and the manual nested underneath. That way a visitor can see all items available for a particular game with one click.
But then again .... I'm no site designer so maybe it's too hard to do this? .... just a suggestion anyways.......

That is already on the agenda. I am not worried if it will be tough or not as it needs to be done. I plan on having it listed as you suggest with a notation of what type of DVD/game case the cover image was designed for as well as what region the original game was from. This will also include manuals.

As far as the layout, I am scrapping all of it and doing it from the ground up. I have been laying things out all day trying to get something that I am happy with. So far I haven't hit the paydirt yet.

If you wanted it up fast you could take a simplistic approach something like....

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4406/layoutwf1.th.jpg (http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=layoutwf1.jpg)

Not much reprograming required .....list on the left altered to show the individual game .... pic displayed could be pulled at random from available covers or default to USA being the most popular and clicking on the cover type brings up the appropriate image. Download button would initiate the download for the highlighted image etc. PDF button should open a new window with pdf displayed seperately. We could nest individual region manuals under the image buttons so users would know a manual is for japan if under the JPN image button etc... a little nasty I know ....but .....

It may be an easy implementation for you in the short term and allow you to get a final version up with all sorts of extra information at a later date. I think it would be great to structure a page to show information about game type, release dates, interesting facts & figures etc .... sort of a one stop shop for information about the game along with the covers, manuals etc. I would also like to see the ability to show the labels for the carts as well if possible. After all ... I cant be the only one which ex-rental carts that would love to replace ripped, damaged ones with a nice shiny new one :-)

ROFL ..... I checked my imageshack page and it currently stands at 216 images. Taking off a few for misc stuff I think it still comes up on the high side of 200. Jeez ....

Still .... I may have contributed a heap more than 100 scans personally taking into account the volume of PAL covers submitted and a big volume of US ... but there's still 70+ probably where you guys submitted raw scans and I merely created the cover ..... so kudo's to everyone whose contributed to get us to where we are today.

That's the plan backlash. Get a nice solid foundation and then move from there and add features until we crush everyone.

In my searching I did find a site with some decent scans, but I am not sure how that would play out being a competitor.

http://www.covergalaxy.com is the only site that seems like a major player in this market. All the other sites are out there to make money and shove ads in your face first and then provide covers.

A big problem with Covers Galaxy though is that they're all/most are direct scans. They don't seem too fond of templates. Notice how they're all different sizes and such. Plus, the site design is pretty awful.

Yep. The nice thing about these projects, and your new site, is that they are about covers, not just scans. The jpgs are tailored to look like each other (in most cases) and to be used in very specific cases. Your site should definitely have an extensive faq and how-to section regarding both using the covers (how to print, where to buy cases, etc) and how to contribute (how to scan, how to edit to the template specifications, etc).

Instructions on how to make covers? Yep ......

However, the way we're going at present we'll have all the covers done for N64 really soon now. Once I've paid off the games I just purchased I'll be buying another lot for the cause. wshbrngr has chimed in with some nice covers also recently so momentum is going nicely at present. Schenley also has a few more to go from his recent purchases. Nate is AWOL but has also purchased covers too.....

Still .... must be a bazillion GBA covers and NDS and so forth .... dont think I could afford to help out there so getting people onto those covers is probably higher priority than N64 at present....

I'd think the priority would be games that are commonly found without cases/boxes. Most people probably have their NDS cases still (I'd hope). GBA, SNES, even old-school NES would be more helpful to most people, I think.

Probably PS1 as well, since those are very commonly found as disc-only. Of course, the cases for PS1 are just CD cases, so it wouldn't take nearly as much work to fix up scans.

Probably PS1 as well, since those are very commonly found as disc-only. Of course, the cases for PS1 are just CD cases, so it wouldn't take nearly as much work to fix up scans.

If you want them in DVD cases it will :)

I've always been of the opinion that things like PS1 and Dreamcast would be better served by getting hi-quality scans of the original cases as opposed to creating DVD cases. I can see the point for N64 boxes to get better protection than the cardboard offers and the fact that the original boxes die due to their fragile nature.

However, CD cases are common as muck and sites like www.cdcovers.cc (http://www.cdcovers.cc) often have covers with wide variances in quality. And covers with just the front etc. So I think we an opportunity to differentiate our project just as much by offering hi-quality scans due to having members using a consistent approach in scanning etc.

That's just my opinion however.

+1 for me.

I have over 100 PSX games all with the instructions and in the CD cases.
The cd cases are easy & cheap, you just have to locate the totally clear ones, which I find at Walmart. I personally do not see the advantage (especially the expense) of converting all those CD games to DVD cases.
(That is just my opinion, other results may vary)
The other down side for me is that unless you use the slim dvd cases, they will take up much more space that the CD cases do, and I am not sure you can store the manual in the slim case.
I think they look nice on my shelves in the CD cases. I have had to print some rear cover art/inlays for them using some not so good scans, but overall they look pretty good.

I also have a bunch of NES games all with instructions. Mostl are originals, but I had to print some of them from scans I found online (Which were not the best quality).
I might be interested in storage cases for the NES games, but I dunno how hard it would be to find original boxes for artwork or if the cases would also let you store the game manual inside.

I am willing to scan all my manuals/case artwork for the cause, though.

This has become somewhat of an addiction and my wife just mentioned that she would like the name and address of the person who started all this..... :)

One thing to think about if we go down the CD case path is that there are two parts .... front and seperate rear/spine .... compared to one combined for a DVD/ GBA/ NDS case.

We'd need to work out a format for posting both as one pic if Snowcone only wants one file per game. Or else the upload page is going to need another rework to specify seperate parts etc.

I sorta like the idea of pdf's if only one file is an option as you can size the pictures up and have front and rear on one page but obviously it requires the ability to create a pdf in the first instance. Only issue is page size as you US'ers use letter or legal and us PAL'ers use A4.

Still .... I'm probably getting a tad too far ahead of everything here ....

I'm looking forward to seeing the individual pages too. Maybe you could whack up a mock up N64 page with one cover and manual to give us a idea of your intentions.

On another topic altogether .... but dear to my heart .... my PAL Dreamcast has given up the ghost and wont read disc's anymore so.....

Anyone here purchased one of these items?

and can tell me what the manufacturing date is? I don't want a non-mil cd version, eg, cant play audio CD's although you guys probably know what I mean :)

I have a fair few original PAL games and I'll need a bootdisc to play them on a US console ... something the non-nil consoles wont allow.

SO if anyone can shed light on these "brand new" consoles I'd really appreciate it given that the seller isn't answering any questions.

Cheers ....

But ..... I think you need to make manuals also available on the same page. That way a user can get both the cover and a pdf manual from the one search. Maybe they should be listed below the cover list?

You'd have to ask Valeman and company. Just make sure you scan at 300dpi when you do it. I haven't made one of the SNES covers so it would probably take me a little while to do it.

I'm exclusively converting n64 boxes and manuals so cant say whats required for SNES covers .... SMMM or Schenley have submitted scans I think and could help there .... but as a rule Snowcone's right about the 300dpi requirment for scanning the boxes.

You dont need to take the box apart. As a general rule remove the inner cart holder, flatten the box so that one spine is showing with the front or rear and scan both sides. That way you end up with the whole box scanned in 2 parts. Pic below illustrates what you should have as a result .....

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/8628/nhlbreakaway99smallgh0.th.jpg (http://img218.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nhlbreakaway99smallgh0.jpg)

I still prefer the " click on the cover to see it" interface of the original site myself as you know exactly whats up for download but I have to say it does look cool except you may want to do something about the static picture as you end up looking at 2 pics at any one time. Maybe making the web 2 pic a smaller thumbnail will make the screen somewhat less crowded?

Just an opinion .... that's all!!

I haven't had a chance to look at those manuals yet, but I haven't seen anything from you that wasn't super high quality so I have no reason to worry. Also, for you and the other admins I am going to go ahead setup FTP accounts for you to push things up as well as maybe login to the backend and help manage the actual data.

I saw another idea on Cover Galaxay that I thought was interesting. People that donate more than $10 get a 7 day unlimited FTP account. They had lots of people that had donated. Might be a way to help me cover the hosting costs of this site.
