View Full Version : Game Storage: Obsessive compulsive or just anal?

I've got a lot of games. Recently, I ran out of space in my DVD racks. I actually don't have the space in my apartment to buy another one. The carpet is too shaggy so it wouldn't keep up the ones I usually buy at Target. But thats beside the point:
I used to keep my games like everyone else... all touching each other, on their sides in a bookshelf or entertainment center. But as of a little less than a year ago, I started getting really anal (or obsessive) about the condition of not only the game discs... but the cases. This means, if they touch, they get scuffed and scratched, and it drives me freaking insane.
Anyone else suffer from this problem? Or am I just a freak? I really want to stop doing this.. it would be so much more cost effective, not to mention attractive, if I were to buy a nice big bookshelf and store all my games there.. of course the cases would get scratched, but I'd have to learn to deal with it.
Ugh. My brain sucks.

Yes, there's that just-unwrapped smoothness vs. the smoothness over time. Even cases that have been properly cared for for a couple years are never as smooth was the day you first unwrapped it. You not alone, though I've actually gotten over it. It took a while.

You could take the game CDs out and place them in a separate holder for easy access, and keep the game cases pristine by not having to constantly open them to get to the CDs.

Yeah, you may be going a little overboard with not wanting your games to touch each other, and I dont think that there's a storage solution out there that can really accommodate that request. However, I can understand the compulsion to keep your coillection as pristine as possible though, and I have been known to wash my hands repeatedly when handling my game cases to try and keep them clean and shiny. 8-[

Probably just OCD. I am the same way with not only games, but DVD movies as well. I usually keep a supply of PS2/XB/GC/DVD cases on hold so when I need to change one, I don't freak out.

I'm the same way. I don't have a single scratch on any of my games, and I try to keep the cases scratch free as well. Unfortunately, I've moved a few times in the past couple years, and that didn't help much. My games and cases are still in fine shape, though.
I'm like this with CDs and their cases as well. Magazines, even. I have several other OCD-ish habits.
Conclusion: We're all a bunch of nutjobs.

Same here. Soon as I buy a game the Discs go into a a CD-Wallet (I use 3 264-Disc wallets) and the cases go into a storage locker. I still the case from my first PSX game looking like it was just opened.

i put the games i am playing into slimline cases so i dont have to take the real game case in and out when i want to play the game. That helps the cases
The answer for you would be this.......Clear DVD Case Wrapper

i thought about getting some, but havent, if the next gen cases are the same i'll probably pick some up.

I keep them in great condition, but I have them in a bookshelf (so they can touch). There's really not much you can do practically (i mean if you wanted to like, put a sheet of paper-towel between each game, that'd be a little much).

You should get some of those wire tower DVD holders. The cases don't rub on each other so they stay almost as fresh as the day you pulled off the shrink wrap.

Do you guys have any ideas for any cheap ones that hold alot? I'm using bookcases at the moment, but I've got so many games (over 800!) that i've run out of room to have them touching, and have to stack them in other places.
It's quite a mess.

Yeah uh... I'll take a picture when I have a digital camera that doesn't suck.
Just imagine a mini wall next to my entertainment center, which is about 7 feet tall.

I try to keep my discs as flawless as possible, but cases might be a little OCD. I don't like my cases to look like shit, but a few scuffs aren't that bad.

Don't shelf and re-shelf your games too often and you won't have much wear on the case.

Where do these come from?
The cheapest I saw yesterday was one that holds 30 or so DVD's for around 25 dollars =/

here's a little help. if you trade in games, swap out the cases so the scuffed ones go to the store. they're all scuffed up beyond collecting at the store anyway.
OCD comes in different degrees, and as long as they're not hurting themselves or others, let's just let people be.

Don't overpack the shelves and they won't scuff for quite some time. Aside from that, there isn't much advice I can really offer you. I am ridiculously anal about my games and DVDs, so I feel the pain.

I'd say OCD/Freakish.....:). Sorry, not trying to put you down, but wow....but hey, at least your not alone, others are similar/close to you.
My games, I have them stacked on atop of another, touching...some are scratched as I buy used games, some are missing manuals, I think my collection would kill you....lol....

gopher, you might want to try something along the lines of this:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=48803&WT.mc_n=4&WT.mc_t=U
it may not hold many, or help your space problem, but the cases wont touch one another.

Ohhhhh, we're talking games here. I was, like, waayyy off the mark there.
And punq, he already has something similar to that I think. Even with that though, the wire frame will do the same, if not worse, than rubbing against another game case would.
I say, stock the hell up on spare cases. Once one gets just completely unbearable, switch the case.
