I'm looking for a strategy RPG along the line of FFT and Vandal Hearts which is not dragged down by menu after menu of boring stats. I'm partial to liking this game anyway (I'm a whore for this type of hand-drawn graphics), but I'm wondering if it's relatively easy to pick up in comparison to Disgaea (which I couldn't get into).
Any thoughts?

I would have to say it's very similar to Disgaea based on what I have read from other people's reviews.

It's nothing like Disgaea.
The only stats you really have to worry about are assigning new skills to people (which is easy), upping stat points if you wanted (also very easy) and item fusion, which is also very easy.
It's got a good learning curve, and after the first battle or so you should know what the game is all about. It's got a good story so far (with a serious tone), and the only reason it got such average reviews is that it dosen't do alot to improve the genre.
It just takes what's there and does it's thing, and it does it well.
It reminds me a bit of Shining Force, with the whole rank up system for characters (i.e a character can go from Swordman to Swordmaster with the right item).
But it's definately not as stat intensive as Disgaea, not even close, and focuses a bit more on the strategy side of things, rather than upping stats for characters / items / whatever else.
I think you would it, based on the games you mentioned above. I'm not a fan of Nippon Ichi's games at all, and I'm having a blast with SD.

No problem!
Everything in Stella Deus is REALLY streamlined, so it's very easy to get into.

It is very much like the original FFT. The music is done by the same guy, and sounds similar. It plays very similarly also. The storys are a bit different though, and I find most of the characters to be a little bland, maybe because I'm spoiled by the likes of NIS. Its solid, but nothing groundbreaking in the slightest.
It did take me a few battles to figure out what the whole team attack business is all about.
And also, there is this repetitive catacomb of trials that you almost have to use to level up between story related battles. For me anyway, it was too hard if you just stick to the story mode.

Stella Deus should be perfect for you since it's not a stat or menu heavy game like FFT. And yes, it's alot easier to pick up than Disgaea, which is more about power leveling, than actual strategy.

Lovely game. If you're into Strategy RPGs, you'll love Stella Deus.

It is good, but IMO slower than Disgaea and La Pucelle because you have to move more in bigger maps. But keep in mind that I'm still in the early going, maybe fought about 10 battles total, and mostly in the Catacomb of Trials.

God I would love to get this game. Unfortunately I don't have $50 bucks to drop on it even though I know that game is worth it. And with the reputation Atlus has with the lack of price drops, looks like this game will never make it to my collection.
