I got Hot Shots Golf with it and it was worth every penny. I'm picking up Lumines on Monday. It is a SWEET system... I do have one dead pixel and it is making me mental so I will probably send it to Sony to have it fixed/replaced. No big deal to me as long as they get it right. It probably wouldn't bother me but it is in the middle of the swing meter for HSG and I get distracted easily. Oh well. I can't wait until the games start rolling out...

Congrats on that, I hope to get one soon.
But, doesn't Sony only replace it if you have like 5 dead pixels or something?

the last thing the OP is going to need is more dough. When you file in the tax braket he did, you ain't hurting with a PSP purchase;)

That's the only thing that's holding me back from buying one. Plus I much rather have Xbox360 than a PSP.
Maybe after a price drop I would consider it. But I refuse to pay $40-$50 for portable games.

first price drop and the PSP is mine. unfortunately, since i own two games, i can't wait much longer than that. hopefully I'll be stronger with the Xbox 360/Revolution/PS3, though that is unlikely.

Until we actually see some hard facts on the PS3 and Revo its a lot easier resist them... on the other hand once they DO drop some info and assuming it's kick ass info you might get weaker again atleast untill you look at your bank balance.
I'm just lucky I built up a bunch of reward points on my credit card, a 50 dollar gift card certainly takes the sting out of the purchase of a 250 dollar portable.

Fortunately and unfortunately, I can afford to buy them all at launch. And I'll want them all more and more as information leaks out. I just know that I'll bite, then kick myself later when it drops in price. This generation, I bought a GC two months before it dropped from $200 to $150, and I bought an Xbox three months before it got JSRF as a pack-in, which was the only game at the time that I really wanted.

I picked up mine yesterday from Best Buy. It's got SEVEN dead pixels. I purchased the two year warranty on it. Now I don't know what to do. I'm not sure if I should contact Sony or exchange at BB. Can I even exchange it since I got the warranty, or do I have to go through that. I'm afraid that if I send it to Sony they may send a differenty PSP and it will void my warranty with BB. I'm gonna have to talk with them.
With the warranty if anything ever happens they give you a voucher for the original purchase price, so 18 months down the road if the price has gone down $100 or so my PSP may just take a crap so I can get it for cheaper with new games!

I'll get one when the price drops to like 150.00$ but 299.00$ is too much for my wallet to handle right now.

If you buy the warranty you should be able to replace it withing two weeks without using up your warranty.

Just exchange it for different PSP... It came to you deffective so you have the right to return it for a perfect condition one. If they give you crap about it, talk to the manager.
I just got my PSP on Friday, opened it up and it had one green pixel. I decided to exchange it, and got one with four. I'm going again today.

why do the psp's have sucha problem with dead pixels?
did the DS have those problems as well?

They give you crap because of that whole "going back" buisness. One bad pixel dosent make it defective. Hell I have 4 and it isnt killing me or harming my gameplay. SOny's stance (as seen in the instuction booklet) is that 2 or 3 DPs is not a sign that the system is broken, which is what they figured people would think) They wanted to assue people it's an issue that most people would find and that unless it was horrendously bad with say 10-15 or more DPs, people should remain calm. Unfortunatly sony's bad history with sub-par manufactoring made people blow the issue out of proportion and start screaming for heads to role and replacments to be made.
Anyway the preveiling feeling is that Sony chose to go with the least expensive shipments of LCD screens which meant a higher probability of DPs as oposed to a zero failure rate which would have jacked up the price.
The DS has had DP problems as has the GBA buy Nintendo is in a position where they have to do more to hold on to it's user base so they offered instant replacments which made Sony's "it's not a defect" stance look even more shitty.

In manufacturing LCD screens the probability of a defect increases with size and resolution. The PSP screen is both much larger and much higher resolution than the DS screens. It also has greater color depth and that also increases the chance of defects that most often manifest as dead or stuck pixels. On top of this is the need to make the screens at a relatively low cost and drive that down over time. Comparing to LCD monitor screens for features per square inch the PSP screen is remarkably low priced and that makes it harder to keep up the quality. Somebody at Sony decided it was better to ship just about every unit and see how many come back than reject the bad screens during production and lose those units for sure.
Sony's supplier may get a handle on this eventually or it may take switching to a different vendor with a better production process. It's hard to say how severe the problem actually is without hard numbers. People with unsatisfactory units are of course going to be much noisier than those with no issues. (Mine appears to be fine.)
Nintendo has always been very conservative in their handheld hardware in sticking to things they know can be reliably delivered for the designated price point. There have frequently been more capable handhelds competing with Nintendo's products but the race doesn't necessarily go to the swiftest or the strongest.

I'm only returning mine because the DP appears in the middle of the screen near the bottom where the HSG swing meter is and I find it very distracting - otherwise I don't think I would. Should I try to return it at EB or should I contact Sony? I also have 4 DPs off to the right but they are only noticable when the screen goes black otherwise I can't really see them. The one that bothers me is black and doesn't change colors at all....

It'd probably be better to go to Sony with it because trading it at EB could end up getting you another unit with more pixels knocked out. As least this way you can specifically tell them you want it DP free and spend less time with returns.

Just got mine today, and boy am I amazed. Its like having a mini plasma screen with a few buttons. I cant afford any games right now so i just look at the trailers and stuff. Best $250 (actually $270 after tax) I ever spent.
I guess that pixel is very noticeable during gameplay? I have one near the top right of the screen and I thought it was horrible the first few days....but now I don't even notice it. The DS did have dead pixel problems as well. I was happy though that mine was dead pixel free. Nintendo is a little better in replacing said units but it is a fairly big misconception that Sony wouldn't do anything. I think you may need to have more than 1 though. As for bragging rights I got my PSP for free. Thanks TRU\EB.

Well, today I went and exchanged my PSP, about 8 times.... I bought it at Target and asked the person working in the electronic department if I could open some up and see if there were dead pixels on each PSP. I looked at a lot and all of them had dead pixels, even the one I ended up getting had a couple. I figure since I bought the warrenty, I can just turn it in, with a valid reason, when sony stops manufacturing them in that way. Anyway, damn its sexy. I payed full price but it was with birthday money so its not as bad as it could be :).

4 isn't bad, I guess... But I gone through 3 PSP before I got a decent 1...
1st. 8 DP & 1 STuck Pixel
2nd. 4 DP all bunch up in the Middle and very fucking noticable..., a bunch of dust in there.
3rd. 1 DP on the botton Corner & a Dead pixel top right, right trigger button gets stuck during game play.
I consider myself lucky w/ the 3rd... but FUCK Sony, for not saying this isn't a defect.

Seriously.... I mean yeah they are hard to notice while playing but you still are paying 250, usually, for a system. I want it to be perfect if I'm shelling out that much cash.

I've said it before the whole "not a defect" was meant to mean it's not an indicator that the system will break on you and force you to replace the screen or something. If sony had taken a no dead pixel stance they'd never meet consumer demand or the price would be 300 bucks or more to cover the cost of screens they dont use.
