Make sure you have a good enough computer to run HL2. That'll give you a pretty good start on the multiplayer. Because you won't enjoy multiplayer as much if you run 15fps and everyone else is capsizing your body left and right. Other than that, I play a lot more multiplayer than I do single player for HL2. CS:S is fun if you didn't play it into the ground on HL1; basically CS:S and CS1 are the same thing, except better graphics. Deathmatch is a lot of fun using the gravity gun. I haven't played CTF yet, nor have I play any other mods, but I'm sure your purchase will be justified just by the single player alone nonetheless.

Awesome. Purely fucking awesome.
You can kill people with a toilet! The gravity gun is the best weapon in any game, EVAR! You can pick up a radiator and crouch behind it. It gives you a bullet shield and a weapon. You can see through the slots in it, but they cant shoot through it. So you just line up the shot and nail them in the head with a radiator.

Yeah, if you're on a laptop, you'll get owned.
As Kayden said, it's extremely fun.. if you get a decent group of people that don't kill you as soon as you spawn. I mean, seriously, say like an enemy is coming up.. whip out the gravity gun, pull that desk over and use it as a shield.. then fire it at him. It's a blast.
Not to mention that you'll ALSO get Counter-Strike Source. I don't play against people, but you can start a server and fill it with bots.. it's the craziest thing, they actually use the microphone. It's creepy. You can use the voice menu and say you need backup and they'll follow. If you install a custom map, it makes the waypoints for you, rather than you needing to download waypoints. It's just.. amazing when there's one guy left on the other team, you're the only human in the game, and a teammate (a bot) says over the microphone "Anyone see him?".. they also call out which bomb site they're at or which one the bomb is planted at.. or where the enemy is.. you just have to play it to believe it, it's unreal.
The CTF in HL2 is actually a mod.. I have it downloaded and installed but never play it.

I run it just fine on my laptop... although I have a P4 3.2 w/ a 128 MB ATI in it...
The single player is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Multiplayer is a bit chaotic, but fun nonetheless. Anyone know of some popular maps to download for MP?

I didn't mean graphically.. I meant it'd be hard to play with a built-in mouse on or near the keyboard.. if he has a seperate mouse that hooks in via USB or something, he'd be fine.
