View Full Version : Killzone 2
Okay, so I figure there are CAGs faster than me, but I potted around a bit, and didn't find a post on the release of the Killzone 2 video.
This morning, a friend of mine ( whoknows ) ran down the hall at school hollering at me to watch this disc. So we went to the computer lab and opened Windows Media Player, and watched the in-game demo of Killzone 2.
To put it mildly, I shat my pants with delight. The graphics are better, in my opinion, than HL2, and the game mechanic is so unbelievably kick ass. I mean, guys catch on fire, and it looks so damn good, I just don't have the adjectives to describe it. Anyway, I dunno where he got it, but maybe you could PM whoknows for a link.
:bouncy: I can't wait.

I still have my doubts as to whether it was in-game or not.
Video is on IGN and probably Gamespot as well.

Gamespot, it was. I mean, although the usual HUD elements were absent, I'm pretty sure that it was in-game.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't in-game footage.
Why would it not be? I mean, Killzone 2 is set for Ps3 launch, and this could be the newest footage out of Sony's new system. Give them the benefit of the doubt, eh?

It was cinematic footage, but that dosent mean it wasnt using game models. Ideally it'd be one of those things where you get all this great stuff when you start the game going "man that's great FMV!" just to have it end and the hud pops up making you go "HOLY CRAP THIS IS THE ACTUAL GAME?!"
What makes me believe it's realtime graphics is a lack of CG bluring during some of the more faster paced points of the video. When things explode they hit and bounce as if they were programed that way rather than animated by hand. Of course it could still actually be a FMV but it could be in the same way some cinemas in Xenosaga are handled, where they still use game graphics but they enhance explosions in post production or add other effects the highten the drama.

yeah... it most def is not in game... if it is going to be then there will be alot of crap filled pants in this nation.
gamespot seems to think it's in-game footage and but it would be too quick to assume that it's EITHER in-game or pre-rendered. i think it's in-game particularly because of the first person view and the way the reloading sequence looks. it's possible that the first landing part is pre-rendered and then flows right into the gameplay seamlessly (unlike xenosaga's slight lag). but just judging from the way the camera moved in first person, the dude reloaded, and then shot at a dude on top of the stairs (especially with the bullet ricochet effects) makes me think it's actual gameplay footage.
guess we'll just have to see

Everyone is forgetting that while the graphics looked nice, the first Killzone was a shit game.
It can be pretty all it wants but trying to play an FPS using the crappy PS2 control scheme is going to automatically knock it down a few pegs.

I don't know what game you were playing. And while the game goes look updated the gun model looked like it hadn't really been upgraded. Maybe it's just me.

Totally agree. Plus the new controller doesn't seem to help things any either.

Agreed. This is one of the many games from last year that I'm waiting for that great $19.99 price point so I can GGC it.
Almost bought it brand new since I loved the game so much when I rented it. Better than Halo2 IMO.

I liked the first Killzone, and enjoyed it a lot online. I personally like the PS2 controls better because, well....on the Xbox controller the black and white buttons just seem out of place to me. I don't want to take my hand off a joystick in order to use the black/white buttons.
The PS3 controller on the other hand doesn't look too good, but who knows, it could be really comfortable (kinda like the GC controller).
And the Xbox 360 is basically the PS2 controller with the one joystick and D-Pad having swapped places (not saying thats a bad thing though)

how can someone say the ps2 controls are crap and xbox are better when the only real difference is the swap of digital and analog controls, which isnt difficult to manage, imo. and there are still buttons in all the same places esentially.
i even heard this on a video game show. i just dont get it.

If you've played more than a couple of Xbox games you'd know that the black and white buttons are hardly used in most games anyhow. They're typically for secondary functions like bringing up a map or turning on a flashlight.
When it comes to FPS games, there's no comparison - the Xbox controller is much better because of the positioning and added sensitivity of the analog sticks.

As to positioning I call bullshit.
"OOOH! my thumb has to move a whole damn inch and a half to the right to move my character! OHH GOD THE PAIN!!!" Please.
As for sesitivity the PS2's analogs were more sensitive than the Playstation's first analogs so maybe this one will be better who knows untill we get actual hands on impressions.

Its not just the positioning, its also the triggers. The Xbox controller is the first console controller to truly come close to the keyboard/mouse in terms of having accurate control over your character in an FPS (even though its not QUITE up to keyboard/mouse standards yet). The PS2 controller is fine for some stuff, just not FPS games. Anyone who has played an FPS which has come out for both systems (XIII, Goldeneye, etc) will tell you the same thing.

What I'm saying is you want to change the controller from an all around controller to one that only fits one genre of gaming, this is ludicrous. What if Nintendo's controller were only good for racing? or the XB controllers only good for 2D jumping games?
The XB's controller was designed the way it was because they expected a lot of FPS coming from a PC game background that's why it works so well for them. The PS wasnt looking to focus on a single genre and thats why the Analogs are additional to the Dpad rather than replacements.

In game, maybe an opening movie, that could be considered in game by sonys terms

Becareful or MorPhiend will come in here and wave his "article" at you.
The problem is how do you drum up interest in a system if you dont have the final unit to show imediatly? The XB2 looks unimpressive to me, if I was on the fense it'd push me away. Sony on the other hand came in with Big Beautiful videos of what they hope to accomplish. Some of it might be prerendered, some of it might be running on emmulated hardware and some might be flat out CG renders but it's a hell of alot mroe exciting than Nintendos little black box and the "Meh" 360 stuff I'm seeing.
If this is even remotely indicative of what they can achieve I say bring it on. It may not exactly be this but atleast I know they have a serious intent to try and entertain us.

Meh, good for a console game but I am spoiled by HL2.
I am sick and tired of crappy facial expression, poor lip synching, lackluster textures, and run of the mill physics.

Looks amazing, but I didn't like the first game at all-- the entire dynamic was far too slow for a FPS.. Seems they got the timing right on this one.
Looks crazy.

well, whatever this trailer was, either in game or not, it got me going back to my killzone re-enjoying some of the awsome moments in that game. Though the game still lacked alot from what some other FPS have, it really tops all others in mood and atmosphere. If the trailer is even a hint of how things are going to be... i'll be damned happy.
also, as a side note I think the Killzon series is the only FPS that I have ever played where the more you are familiar with your guns, the better you are at playing. The way each gun is played with just makes for a cool experience.

Anyone still doubting that Sony has lied to us when calling that KZ2 footage as real game should take a little step back to before the PS2 launch. Sony would show off dozens of games, of course showing cinematics only, and then call that real gameplay footage, just to get people hyped up. Don't be so gullible people.

I dont think anyone here doubts it's cinema but people are trying to it's cinema done in engine. Anyway Untill we see actuall pics of a person playing the thing it's not going to be resolved, I actually see another (better) instance of what pic seems to suggest but I'm not going to bother pointing ot out with visual evidence because someone will just try to discover a way to debunk it.

actually I change my mind now about thinking this is not in game graphics:
after wathing the Sony press confrence, it makes perfect sense that this is in game graphics... it does not mean this is how the game will be exactly (in terms of gameplay) but this is what it will look like.
if you need a good example to compare to, look at insomniac's FPS for the PS3... i think that's enough evidence as is.

I liked it, but a lot of people thought it was "too slow" and things like that, as in you cant just go in running and shooting and expect to survive, you have to take cover and stuff like that.

It's good for a while, then it gets boring after a couple of weeks. Renting is the best option, I think.

Killzone requires at least 3 shoulder buttons / triggers. It has sprint, primary fire, and secondary fire all 3 should not be face buttons. Half-Life 2 does as well, I'm curious as to how they will port those controls over to XBOX.
BTW, to anyone who doesn't know Killzone has completely customizable controls.
EDIT: On topic, the video was a demonstation. I don't think it can run ingame on a PS3. Also, demo vids are sometimes much cooler than the actual game turns out to be (Halo 2).

Don't mean to drag up a dead topic, but I'm curious if anyone has any links or more news about Killzone 2 yet? Like story wise, are the same guys going to be returning, or is it a whole new story? Any new footage movies? Anything?
I searched around the net and could only find the same E3 movie for it and not really anything new news wise.
