View Full Version : The PS3 Controller Looks AWFUL.

I'll reserve judgment until I actually play it but the controller looks awful. WTF are they smoking over there? Wireless is nice but if you aren't going to add or take away any of the PS2 buttons, why not just make the PS3 controller the same style except wireless? They already know it works...

Im gunna agree with you here... However, people were bitching that Sony didnt change the controller between psx and ps2... I liked the design myself, and I bet theyre going to have a bunch of people bitching about this one...
It reminds me of a logitec controller I saw once.
I think the console itself looks cool... but I wish it would be a little more rectangular as to stack nicely with my other systems.

The jury is still out on exactly why it's the way it is. But some are speculating that it has something to do with the legal battle Sony was in over the Dual Shock design, and that sounds like the most logical reason to me thus far.

Well, why fix what isn't broken. Unless your flawless design can no longer legally be produced...

as I already said in another thread, it looks like a friggin sidewinder PC gamepad, and I absolutely hated those things
Maybe I'll think differently when I get my hands on it, but based on looks alone, I'll stick with Dual Shock 2 if you can use it

the buttons are all pretty much in the same places, so it probly wont feel too much different, its just more rounded off and has longer handles

I thought that lawsuit had more to do with the vibration technology than the shape. Didn't Nintendo and MS pay them off? All the controllers are totally different except for the rumble... which Isn't really that creative of an idea, so it sucks someone can say they 'own' the idea for a shaking controller.
Well, why fix what isn't broken. Unless your flawless design can no longer legally be produced...
Is that to say these wont rumble? Or they'll use a different method? Maybe the weight on a stick was the only one that company patented. (If you have a clear controller, you'll know what I mean.) However... I saw pens with the same mechanism way back in the 90s... :-k Maybe they sued them too...

I thought the same. Even then though, with that excuse out of the way, what are we left with? Sony making chang3s for chang3's sake? It just doesn't seem right to me.
Then again, none of us have even seen one of these in person, so for all we know it's an ergonomic dream. It just doesn't really look the part.
I reserve judgement until I actually hold the thing in my hands, but it looks like a crescent moon?

Call me crazy... but all that ergonomic crap always feels uncomfortable. Those wrist things for typing/mice put my hand too high and my wrist gets sore. The ergonomic keyboards make me feel... odd...

Well, I didn't mean advertised ergonomics. I meant the meaning of the actual word. In that it will actually feel ok in your hands, regardless of whether it's advertised as being ergonomic or not.

People with regular sized hands dont have any trouble with the old controllers design. if you complain about the od Dual shocks your hands are either smaller than average or you dont hold a controller correctly (trust me there are plenty of people like this!)
The lawsuit was over the force feedback tech, meaning the way in which the controllers rumbled in accordance to things on screen. The double motor Sony used infringed on the pattent (though not on purpose) and this might have forced sony to concider a new way to create vibration which would have altered the internal design so much that they couldnt keep the shape as it was, Heck the motors were in the handles so with out them they probably fingured changing them was a good idea to try and fit with their new system design.
Whether any of this is true is up in the air but the fact is it's changed and we'll either get used to it or wait for them to release a different controller style. This is ofcouse assuming they dont have regular ports hidden under a covering in which case just plag in your old Dualshock2s and have fun.

I thought it may be boomerang shaped, to function as a movement sensitive racing wheel. Then i shut off MacGuyver, and realized how much of a dumbass i am for thinking it
i wish they had made the shoulder buttons more like triggers - i bet it would make playing killzone 2 (and any other fps) feel a lot better. on a side note, it could also have to do with balancing weight. iono much about tech stuff but most wireless controllers i've had are really top heavy and the ps2 controller is already the most top heavy of the 3 current systems. but personally, i just wish they had made it more fps friendly like the x360's (and current xbox's) controller.

I like my good old trusty Dualshock, so my initial reaction to the new design is "What the hell....?", but there's no way to know if it will be a good or bad thing until you actually get to hold it and try it out.
Is the PS3 console itself sort of rounded more than rectangular? Does that mean standing it up straight like in the pictures is the only option? Now that I don't like. I bought my PS2 on launch day, and have used it standing on it's side exactly zero times since then. Where I store it would not fit with the standing position.

Only the top-side has a round surface. The bottom is flat. You can lay it flat or stand it up, just like PS2. Just imagine it has a hunchback. ;)

Might be good, might be bad.
My two cents:
I know two things however.
The left Stick and D-pad need to swap positions. And secondly, the sticks need to be concave ala the Xbox. They just become a lot easier to do precise movements that way, ala the Xbox controller.

Since it's boomarang shape, maybe it could come back to me after I hit my umm...--- friend with it. But yea the old layout woulda been nice. Unless it hooks up to something and used as a steering wheel then Mm that would be interesting.

I really dont like the concept of altering the controller just to make it easier for FPS lovers, not everyone plays them or even wants to. You want a special control for you favorite genre then I'm sure there are plenty of 3rd party controllers for your pleasure. And swaping of the dpad and left analog is unnecessary because most people have no trouble with them where they are and the symetrical design is pleasing to the eye.

I am glad it's longer, as I found when I would use the PS2 controller, the controller handles would tend to grind into the palm of my hands.
So this should fix that, except it may now be too long...For me at least.
PS: I have small hands.

I loved the n64 controller, and the gamecube, and well as the xbox S one, is pretty good. I've always hated the playstation ones, but this is even worse. I've used controllers like this and the feel is absolutely horrible.

I dont think the PS2 controller is bad but it doesn't come close to the comfortability of the GC or XB (duke or Controller S) controllers. If they just switched the fucking left analog stick with the D-pad and added a trigger like button that would help greatly.

I'm thinking this is a Duke level controller catastrophe. I'm sure there will be a some who like it, but I don't think I'm going to be one of them. As someone above said, I've used controllers like this before and have always found them uncomfortable. Of course, I haven't held this controller yet and reserve final judgement until I do, but I'm thinking the outlook isn't too good. The DualShock was never an amazing controller, but it was the most standard of the controllers and always got the job done. Heaven knows why they fucked with that.

I hated the triggers on the DC controller they were a bitch and a half for anything other than FPS games and I have FPS games. And I'm sick of hearing the "switch the Dpad" garbage, move your thumb a inch and a half to the right and quit that crap.

at least when i throw the controller down in frustration it will come back to me!
I agree, the controller is pretty weird and funky. I also don't like the way the D-pad slants to the right....reminicent of the original X-box controller face-buttons.
I was REALLY hoping Sony would completely redesign the Dual Shock. Yeah the new controller looks weird, but its basically the same core design but the casing is just in a banana shape. I was really hoping that they would stick the left analog stick where the D-pad is. IMO the Xbox 360 controller looks like the perfect controller, even better than the controller S. In fact i'd love it if Sony just ripped off the 360 design and made something similar. However, a new design like that would screw up some of the backwards compatibility games and alienate or PO some PS fanboys who are just very used to the dual-shock.

The whole system looks awful. This new generation looks like crap for the most part, with the Revolution looking the most sleek but also the most plain. The XBOX360 imo looks the best, with Sony dropping the ball completely with this ugly PS3 design.

Yeah I think it looks horrid. The dual shock controller is the closest anyone has come to designing the perfect controller and I don't like that they are breaking near perfection. All they had to do was lower the L2/R2 buttons to the natural finger placement and there would never be a need to design a new controller, ever.

I seriously doubt this controller design is final. I'm betting it's slightly close, but Sony still has a year to tinker with it; just as the early PSP shots were slightly close, but not at all the same as the final product.

One of my friends got to see the PS3 at E3, the line was too long for me to waste the whole day, and was telling me about the controller and how different it looks from the DS2. Believe me or not, but he said it's not that much bigger than the DS2, as the handles are slightly longer and thinner. Other than the radically changed aesthetic design (slick, curved design), it's not all that much of a radical change to the size of the controller and placement of the button. It may just be my crappy way of describing it, but it seems like seeing it in person, it's different than how the pics make it look.
markholladay
06-09-2005, 02:32 AM
I think it is pretty ugly too. But I wonder if it will be good for all sort of hand sizes. For instance, if you have a large hand, hold it more near the bottom, that way your fingers have plenty of room to stretch up to the buttons. Or smaller hands can grip it real high.
I have no idea if that is what they are thinking. But it is what I thought when I first looked at it.
