I picked up NFS Rivals with the TRU coupons......it was either that or Ridge Racer.
I realize they're not the same type of game......but does Rivals blow chunks or is it a decent game? I was figuring it was the "deeper" of the two games.......I havent played a Ridge Racer game since the PS1.
Or given a choice: Wipeout Pure or Ridge Racer?

Well, if you're looking for customization and you like driving ricers, then NFS is a good choice. However, Ridge Racer is the best game I've played on the PSP, no question. Everything works well despite the fact that it's a glorified compilation. I'm actually mad at myself for not picking this one up at launch, this game deserves to be played. The controls are perfect and serve as a good showcase for the analog nub, the graphics are excellent (outside of the color bleeding), and the game progresses at a perfect pace. It just feels as if this game were meant to be on the PSP.
Wipeout pure is an awesome game as well, but I think it is limited when it gets down to coming back to play the game after beating it.

If you're going to get a racer for the PSP, get Ridge Racer or Wipeout. My vote goes to Ridge Racer

just get ridge racer, excellent drift game. Rent wipeout pure cause it's not that good its not one of those games that have a fun factor to them, and for nfs just forget about that dont waste your money

Why bag NFS......its seems like its got good graphics, good racing, what blows about it....
Framerate? Sense of Speed? Longevity??
I've removed wipeout from my list because I never played the first game that much to begin with (PS1....it was cool, but I could never get into it).....

none of the above - i don't think racing games really translate well onto the small screen

I wound up picking up NFS Rivals, Ridge Racer and Twisted Metal. I'm not really into those puzzle games (I can sit around playing a racing game for 3 hours, but sitting around playing tetris for some reason seems like a waste of time...<SHRUG>)
Anyhow, I haven' tried any of them yet, but I'm looking forward to checking all of them out.
I'll pick up wipeout when it hits the $25 range....and probably Tony Hawk as well, just to have a fun generic time-waster kinda game. I could never get good enough at that game to remember all the special tricks and combos and stuff......

Yeah then this Tony Hawk isnt going to help you much... I mean they give you a tutorial level and stuff but there are times when they ask for a combo to complete something and you;ll just turn it off after 3 tries. Combos are a pain in the ass even with manuals.

Ok, in that case I'll be passin on this until its in the $9.99 region...thanks for the tip. I've enjoyed the previous TOny Hawk games, but I never got further than level 2 or 3 in any one of the games. Because after that, even with interesting places to trick off of, it went kinda too far, where the only way to win was to endlessly trick..and trick..and trick..and trick...its like "enough ENOUGH!"

Guess I find myself in the minority....I think of the two Rivals is the deepr game...RR I just feel like its how to control a powerslide and not bump into cars. Rivals I feel like I'm actualy racing, controlling a powerslide is just one of the elements of winning. In RR I feel like steering along the track is almost unnecessary, its just about negotiating the powerslides. The other cars aren't really racing you, they're just in the way like obstacles to get around.
I dunno....my take on it. I'm still glad I bought both :)
