UPDATE 6/10/05
You will play as Tony Cipriani in the year 1998 in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PSP. Cipriani is fresh back in the city after laying low for a while, having offered a fellow mobster a favor for Don Salvatore Leone. The grateful Salvatore puts you straight back to work.
PlayStation 2 Official Magazine UK has broke the news on the new game with cover art featuring Misty, Joey's girlfriend from GTA III. Cipriani was voiced by Michael Madsen for III, and he will be reprising his role. In screenshots that I saw, I spotted Punk Noodles, the back steps of Luigi's Club, Salvatore's mansion, a bridge in Shoreside Vale, a PCJ-600, the same model of Police cars from GTA III, a sniper rifle, an Esperanto, a Swat Truck and more! Luigi's Club looks like it has been renamed to Paulie's Revue Pad for the era. The missions that the magazine was shown are as follows:
Mission 1
We're rolling through the Red Light District, and true enough, it's familiar but different. We're outside Luigi's strip club, Sex Club 7 - the first place you visit in GTA III - but Luigi isn't here yet. It's Paulie's Revue Bar and is run by JD O'Toole, a slimy pervert with links to the triads. He wants to get in with the Leone mob instead, so he tips you off about a Triad attack in St. Marks. It's nearby, so we head to AmmuNation and load up on Uzis.
We rock up in the Sentinel, and Tony's henchman jumps out and stand guard while we decide to head off the attack before it arrives. Two waves of angry triads and several drive-by shootings later, a bulletproof patriot reaches the casino and plants a bomb. Boom! It wrecks the place, but doesn't demolish it. It's not enough for the gangsters. Relentless, they send another truck packed with explosives, parking it nearby - this one will bring the whole place down if it blows. How can we save the casino?
Naturally we leap in the bomb truck and drive off, paying great attention to the timer and safe-distance meters. Once clear we park up and let it detonate near some innocent bystanders, saving considerable damage to Mafia property. Phew.
Mission 2
We're back in the Sentinel, crusing over to Don Salvatore's mansion. He wants us to retrieve some cash from the docks at Atlantic Quays, so we take a dirt bike from his driveway and head down the hill. Across the water we can see Shoreside Vale- the draw distance is extremely impressive.
Unfortunately, those bomb-happy Triads have rigged the warehouse, so collecting the cash packages is a race against time - allwhile fighting running battles. In the nick of time we dash out and the building goes up, damaging everything nearby. Ignoring the smoking cars, we steal a chopper, gassing it up and weaving madly to avoid the incoming wave of Belly Up fish vans. Eventually, with only minor civilian casualties, we reach the safety of Salvatore's mansion once again.
One of the quotes in the magazine from Rockstar was "when you see it on the actual thing (PSP), it looks f**king amazing!" I bet all my money that Dan Houser was the one that said that, mainly because he said the exact same thing to me back on May 19 at E3 2005. They were really excited about it.
Some buildings have been altered from 2001's GTA III to better represent the era. They say that "it's benefitted from improvements in Vice City and San Andreas."

Happy day!
Gamespot suggests a release date of Sep.1 (I can hear EB changing their release dates already) I just wonder how much loading the game will require. Liberty city is smaller than the other cities making it great for a limited space restrictions since ideally they'd need to limit loading to moving between islands and loading cinemas. But radio stations might suck for loading... maybe it'll let you use MP3s off the memory stick.
Is there a time period? I was hoping for a really gritty '70s GTA. I mean, Liberty City is a fictional New York -- and were better than NYC to use the '70s decade?
I assume it will continue continuity after the main character of GTA III hit the bricks. GTA III felt like '90s Euro, though.

Hopefully the main character will be able to swim and fly(effectively) around Liberty City this time. I'd like to see some type of wireless multiplayer, similar to the 2P modes in San Andreas.

I wouldnt be suprised to see wireless multiplayer, I'd bet the time period would just generally be "the present" or "near future" since they've already done the 80s and 90s (GTA3 was technically the early 00s). Swimming, maybe "Fido" (the only name he's ever actually referred to in GTA3) has learned during his time since his first appearance... heck maybe you even meet up with the other lead characters like JC and Tommy or possibly find out what happened to Donald Love (mysterious dissaperance left me going "Wha?")

Maybe the "stories" part of the title hints that the gameplay will be broken up into smaller sections somehow - you know, to allow for minimized load-times...

I'm curious to see how this is going to work on the small screen - don't you need the storage found only on a DVD to make a game like this? 1.8GB is a lot but I wonder if it is enough...

For GTA3, definitely.

well, also remember the resolution off the textures don't have to be as good as the PS2 since it's on a smaller screen. think of the Ps2 textures taken from %100 to %60 and that saves up alot of space right off the bat.

His name is Claude, it's in GTA:SA

I dont have any of the PC versions, but I've played with some of the modding... it's fun as hell! not to mention San Andreases unused code for a mini-game when you have "coffee" in your girlfriend's house.

Nice. I like how we get to play as Tony Cipriani, I always enjoyed his chats with Lazlow on the talk radio station in GTA3. Should be a pretty good game and it looks very nice right now. Can't wait.
Scorch, good for you, go play those mods if you don't like it.

yeah, when I played GTA3 for the first time, i right away loved the Tony character. He's probably the character I missed the most from the GTA series.

Oh, i'm sorry. Here I was thinking this was a board for posting opinions. God forbid someone bash Grand Theft Auto.
Wait. Who are you, anyways? Have you ever even talked to me in a PM, on AIM, on XBox Live or basically anywhere else besides my posts.. or do you just read my observations on a subject, decide that you don't like how my views clash with yours, and instead of having a decent discussion, immediately resort to name calling?
Regardless, it looks like the same old shit with the ability to play online and change clothes.. as I said, whoopteedo. You'll quickly learn how fun it is when you're playing against some 10 year old who camps whereever you spawn. GTA3 was fun in its time, but after playing San Andreas, it'd be like playing in a neighborhood. Have you tried to go back and play GTA3 or Vice City after playing San Andreas? It's almost claustrophobic.

Its gonna be a GTA 3 based game but with all the goodness that made San Andreas. Why would they take a step back on the PSP version?

Because the disk can't hold that much space.. I'm sure they'll find ways around it, but I doubt the city size would be improved.. i'll follow it, but I wouldn't expect something better than San Andreas.. seems like GTA3 with a few new missions, different clothes and an online mode.

Hey, bash GTA all you want - I don't care. An hey, I agree that a mere remake of GTA 3 would blow.
As for who I am, I'm just a faceless internet MB poster just like you. Seriously though, whether you 'know' me or not, I still see your posts all the time. And while you are correct in implying that i should not judge your character based soley on your MB posts, that's all I have to go on. So, sorry about that. I agree that a discussion forum is the place for civil conversation and debate, but it's not as though your posts are the most positive in the world. You are certainly entitled to express your opinion, and then discuss it with others. I just think that the nature of your posts is sometimes a bit...unnecessasarily negative and antogonistic. But hey, that's just my opinion, and you are certainly entitled to disagree!
No harm intended - it's not like I don't like you or something; like you said, I don't even know you.

actually this game is not just new sidestorys, it's a new era in Liberty CIty as well as a totally different story (takes place e few years or a few months before GTA3). SO this IS a totally new thing in a redone, better version of Liberty City... not to mention out of all the GTA's, GTA3's Liberty City was the most fun to drive around in.
