Here's a new spin (at least I think so, I don't pay much attention to the system boards) on an old, worn out question. If you had to pick one company, nintendo, microsoft or sony to stop making console systems AND games (no 3rd party stuff), which would it be? I think this is different than picking your least favorite, since each one does something different and you may like one better overall, but there's one thing about another that you just couldn't give up.
edit: they could still make pc games, though I think microsoft is the only one that does that.

If I chose Microsoft, would they have to stop publishing PC games as well or is this just consoles? If it includes PC then I'd have to say Sony since I rarely play any of their first party stuff. But if it's just consoles, than I'd have to say MS, since their console first party games with the exclusion of Halo, tend to be mediocre compared to the other two.

God of war to prove you wrong.
Anyway, EA games. They swallowed and destroyed so many of my favorite developers :(

I'm not good at these kinds of hypothetical questions. I can't help but ask myself why I would have to choose to get rid of a company when each brings their own talents to the industry and better it as a whole. To remove a company would be to reduce competition which would only lead to mediocre games from the two remaining companies leaving both essentially crappy and disposable. So when you vote one out, you vote them all out.
I'm going to sleep.

This is a video game topic, this is not a place to think. If you want to use your brain, please leave.
Though it seems like I was right. I figured nintendo would be the least favorite, but they're so unique I figured they'd be the last one people would choose. Xbox seems to often just duplicate sony, and they released halo on the pc anyways.

I accidently put Nintendo so take one away as my vote would go to Sony or Microsoft. But that is hard. Probably Microsoft as they could go back to PC and we wouldnt lose anything.

Games - Microsoft (Sony made Ico and God of War)
Consoles - Sony (Most unreliable company ever)
Overall - Sony

Isn't the obvious answer Microsoft? Is there a single game that they make themselves that you just couldn't live without? The Xbox is a great system and all but I think Sony would have you covered if Microsoft suddenly withdrew from gaming altogether...

What a fucking retarded idea for a thread. I think the more competition the better, each company has their strengths.
^^ That fact that most would want all 3 to keep going is what makes it an interesting problem.

Sony, since they have no clue how to make hardware. If you sat there with a gun to the back of Ken Kutaragi's head and told him to make a dependable home gaming console or die... well... there's about an 85% chance of death in that forecast.

Id have to say Microsoft, because the PS3 beats down the XBOX360, and nintendo's First Party Titles Pwn every one else

id have to say microsoft.... nintendo games are fantastic, and regardless of sonys ability to put out a solid system on the first run, they have WAY more games that i enjoy, and i think someone named ICO and God of War already, man those two games are better tahn anything ive played on xbox (except for ninja gaiden)

Microsoft. They can easily just pump out titles on PC, and could sell PCs at a loss like XBoxes if they really wanted to.

I don't like Sony's hardware but the PS3 does look promising. I have bought PS1 and PS2 close to launch and haven't had a problem but I know that they definetly exist. I think I just got lucky. As far as games go, I can't think of any note worthy games that they have released. Although I dislike Sony's hardware, I really like their games (Ico, God of War, soon to be Shadow of the Colussus). Nintendo has great games and very durable hardware.

^^^ Nokia is really the best answer so far.
as for software, i'd go with Crave Entertainment, or Crave Games. Makers of hit titles such as Trigger Man, UFC, and Future Tactics: The Uprising. When I see their label on a game, 'it's like a disease.'

I wouldnt want to get rid of any but no XB = no XB LIVE and Nintendo makes awesome games so Sony is my choice. Sony also comes out with peripherals and doesn't support them (HDD, Eyetoy). Their new controller wont help, it maybe comfortable but it is one of the ugliest monstrosities i've ever seen. I'd rather be caught with the DS from last years E3 than that thing.

Infinium Labs...What's that? They still haven't made that crappy Phantom console they've been trying to hype for two years now?
Well guess I'll go with Microsoft, but only cuz I don't play that many of their first party games.

It was a tough choice, but I had to vote Sony...only because the background color of the PSP home screen is determined by the month. :P
But seriously, my vote for Sony was because it seems many of the Japanese companies don't want to develop for the Xbox (though that is changing), while the American companies had/have a hard time surviving in the Japanese markets.
Solution, nix one of the two Japanese companies, so we keep 'nice' flow of Japanese titles and American titles. I picked Sony instead of Nintendo even though I own more PS2 titles than GCN titles, all of my PS2 titles are 3rd party games. Most of my favorite GCN titles are from Nintendo or one of their properties.
The only reason japanese/non-japanese plays a role is because they tend to produce different styled games than the other. For instance, most non-japanese RPGs are an action RPG (Fable, Elder Scrolls, Gothic); while the japanese RPGs are usually in some form of select the command to act. There are exceptions to the rule of course, LotR: The Third Age and Star Ocean.
And would you seriously think a non-japanese company could produce Katamari Damacy?

I picked M$, their games aren't the greatest, and sonys console is just too popular to stop making. Nintendo doesn't get considered, as everyone should know they are arguably the best publisher (my personal fav.) and without their consoles, there wouldn't be nintendo games.

microsoft, no question, they brought nothing new to the table this gen, and next gen seems to be more of the same, they're just a carbon copy of sony's computer entertainment branch
I'd have to say Sony. PS2 is the weakest system of the current generation, and they don't make the best games. They do make money, though.

no question microsoft , I think I could count all of microsofts good first party games on 3 fingers. Meanwhile sony has god of war, ICO, Wipeout, Hot shots golf, and Socom just to name a few.

i really dont see how you can say the eyetoy is not supported, did you see e3 at all? there were like 4 eye toy games announced, in addition to the 3 sony already put out and a frew from 3rd parties. i dont know how much more support you want...
the controller argument is null and void, looks mean nothing. if its comfrtable, point for sony, if it sucks, point against sony. we wont know for a year, so it dosent matter.
the HDD was a failed expariment, easily admitted, but the best part about the hdd option is using it to load games onto, sure, sony dosent support it, but its a useful feature none the less.

It's good to see that M$ is catching up to Sony in this poll. There are just too many great games available on the PS2 to wish them out of the industry. Sony first party titles have been above average in terms of quality for the most part. The majority of good games on the XBOX are available on another system, with the exception of a small few(NG, DOA, Otogi, Halo). The same will be the case with the next generation XBOX.

Nintendo is content with being 3rd place and 3rd rate. They might as well get out of the race.

Be honest. The PS2, despite its technical shotcomings, has more *variety* than any other system. Can you find Final Fantasy on another console? Or Space Channel 5-2? How about Mr. Mosquito (quirky but fun). Or Ico? Kingdom Hearts? Rez? RC Flyer?
(shrug)
Maybe it's just me, but I don't care about how "powerful" a console is. I care about the games, and I care about the variety. The more variety, the better.
IMHO if you don't own a PS2, it's like sex with just two women. You limit your pleasure.
If you *do* own a PS2, it's like sex with *many* women..... african, american, european, asian, hispanic..... tons of variety! Every genre is represented.

ANSWER FOR POLL: I think Nintendo should follow Sega's path, dump the console, and concentration on marketing their masterpieces like Zelda and Mario and Metroid for the PS2 & Xbox.
On the other hand, Nintendo has more money than any other company, so maybe they're actually smart to continue a console-oriented strategy? Perhaps consoles allow Nintendo to lock in an audience (esepcially the kids).

Well the GC has a Final Fantasy game and Space Channel 5-2 and Rez can also be found on the DC (non US releases of course ;) ) But I agree with you on the variety in the PS2's software library.

Nintendo. I can't stand Mario and his utter ridiculousness.
The music in every Mario game has sucked for the past 10 years. Always MIDI, always annoying. Mario Tennis. mario Golf. Mario kart. Now at E3- Mario Soccer, Mario baaseball.
mario Party. Mario toilet paper. You name it.
Link could have a voice, dialog (spoken with voice acting), and fully orchestrated music. Instead they give you the same game we have been playing since the N64 with a new gimmick. Sailing. horseback riding (a throwback to Zelda 64), or turning into an animal.
nintendo speaks of making games instead of advancing power but all they have done in the past 6 years is release countless number of sequels, re-release games from older platforms, and release a million different versions of the gameboy (GB micro, SP, advance, color, pocket, etc).
The Nintendo DS, although cool, has very, very few games. Somebody put this company to sleep or force them to make games for another system.

1) Jak & Daxter, Jak 2, Jak 3, Jak X
2) Halo: CE, Halo 2 ... [Halo 3]
3) Ratchet & Clank, R&C: GC, R&C: UYA, Ratchet whatever-it's-called
4) SOCOM, SOCOM2, SOCOM3
All the same game with some tweaks/gimmicks, with a little cross-genre action thrown in to boot (Jak X). The only difference between what Nintendo does and what MS and Sony are doing is that Nintendo has been doing it longer than either of them combined. Releasing sequels to established franchises is easy money for these companies.
