I've never been a big Sonic fan. I didn't own a Genesis until about 5 years ago, although I did own a Game Gear prior to that and I enjoyed Sonic 2 for that system. Other than that and Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles, I didn't much care for the 2D Sonic titles. Sonic Advneture on the Dreamcast was my favorite game starring the spunky blue hedgehog, in fact.

That all may change soon. At E3, I played a lot of DS games. The DS probably had a better showing than any other system, in fact. The best game I played for the system was Sonic Rush.

I don't know how the Sonic Advance games play, but Rush was an incredible experience. Both DS screens were used for gameplay, which provided for levels twice the size of a normal portable Sonic game. Transitions between the lower and upper screens were seamless and fluid, and the level design was probably the best I've seen in the series since Sonic 3.

The 10 minutes I spent playing the game at E3 were enough to make me want to buy it. I don't have a DS yet, but Rush and several other stellar titles I got to try out at E3 have sealed the deal- I will be purchasing a DS just as soon as I can afford it.

You should all keep an eye on this game if you weren't doing so already.

Rush IS 100% incredible.

Everyone listen to this man. One of the absolute best games at E3.

I was thinking about getting sonic rush by looking at the previews and videos. but knowing that 2 cags already highly recommend it, that was enough for me.

it's mine when it comes out, along with the other 15+ must get DS games.

Wow, this is certainly good news for us Sonic fans out there.

Now I wish I never would have sold my DS. I know I'm going to have to go out and pick one up again pretty soon.

I play that one all the time too! Great old school hockey game! Seems as though we have similar tastes. The PSP is cool but if you've played the PS1 and the PS2 you pretty much know what to expect and the thought of buying games for 2 consoles (PS2 + GC) and 3 handhelds (GBA SP, DS, + PSP) is a bit much.

One of the many DS games from e3 that I need to buy. I laugh at the people who kept saying "but the DS doesn't have any games", because it looks like they couldn't be more wrong.

Link doesn't work.

I'm also looking foward to sonic. This along with the New SMB, it looks like the DS is getting some pretty sweet platformers.

DS is trouncing the PSP in terms of games in my eyes, I'm leaning toward the purchase of one now I think. Still undecided.

my take on the subject is if a game cannot offer any multiplayer, put it on a portable. portables are perfect for single player games, and if its a multi player game, put it on a console. theres no reason for games like devil may cry and tales of symphonia are on home consoles, when they offer little to no reason to be, aside from a larger screen, which sould be solved by some sort of ds/psp to TV connection.

obviously the size of the games are much smaller, and the gaming public wouldnt go for it, and game publishers would lose money by releasing less versions, but it makes sence to me anyways =op

I disagree, some single player games, especially the story driven ones, benefit from being able to be played for long periods at a time. Imagine playing RE 4 or MGS 3 or FF X for 5 minutes at a time? Chances are you won't be able to progress much or even make it to a save point in that short amount of time.

To me, the perfect portable game should be pick up and play. Something that can be enjoyed for short periods of time as well as long. No overly long cutscenes and nothing dialogue intensive. It doesn't matter if it's multiplayer or not.

To make portable games a blast they need a save anywhere feature... Disgaea might be a great portable since it has a save [almost] anywhere feature.

Pick up and play is important for portables, since that's what you're doing literally.

Single player games like MGS and Devil May Cry would not have the same impact if confined to a miniature platform.

im not talking about pick up and play games, obviously were ffx on the psp, it would require the same amount of time dedicated to the ps2 version, but what would the point be of having it on a console when you have it on a portable you can simply take anywhere.

The problem is though even with the single player games for the PSP I'm feeling they are watered down versions of the PS2 games. Spider-Man 2 for example...it plays like Spider-Man 1 for the PS2 but is extremely short and extremely easy. Although the graphics are right up there the actual game is lacking. Most people would cry foul if that was the case with Devil May Cry or Tales.

The shortness is most likely due to the battery restraints and reading data off of the disc. I didn't think the load times were going to bother me all that much because they don't on the PS2 but when I want to play a quick game on the PSP I can't always do that. Everyone bashes Nintendo for sticking with the cartridge format but I really believe now it is a better way to go with portables. Not only for the battery but also for the load times. There are still some on the DS but they aren't nearly as long like on the PSP. In a way it takes away from what a portable system is supposed to be.

When it comes down to it the SP is actually the best REAL handheld system to date. No loading times, a good battery life, and one kick ass library of games.

I am really starting to wonder how more taxing games will be handled on the PSP such as Grand Theft Auto. I imagine fans of the serious will like it but at what cost? I'm sure the load times will be pretty long. Mainly because there isn't really a way around it at this point.

Although the DS isn't technically amazing I really do like the innovative side of the system and from what it seems like the content (games) is going to make it a kick ass system.

It is pretty hard though for the PSP to be anything different from the PS1 and the PS2. I know that is what they set out to accomplish and there is no doubt that they pulled it off. It is really a monster piece of hardware. However the Gameboy may actually fair well because it offers a unique experience as opposed to what is currently on the consoles. Yes older technology but why would I spend $50 on a watered down version of the same game I could buy on the PS2? Portability? Maybe. I'm just not sure it's really worth it anymore.

But I only get to play my DS/GBA for short periods of time. It's either when I'm waiting in line for something, or before class, or when work is slow etc. . . nothing more than 20 minutes top. Playing FF X for short periods of time like this would only hurt the gameplay experience. What if I'm in the middle of a cut scene or a boss fight and had to stop all of a sudden? Leave it on and run the risk of draining your batteries or just shut off and do it all over again? Also if I had an hour or two to spend on a game why not just play it on a console at home on a tv?

What's funny is that I thought the same things - but then what I have been doing the last few weeks is playing my PSP and DS *on the couch*, a mere 12 feet from my 51" TV, and completely ignoring my GC and my relatively new PS2 (and all the games I have yet to play like FFX, KH, R&C, La Pucelle, Suik III, and many others). I do this late at night after the kids are in bed and after I've done some work and CAG. It is the equivalent of curling up with a good book - sometimes I don't want to drag out the console controller and turn on the big TV and sound system. It is more "cozy" to sit there with the portable. I also tend to play them with the AC adapter on so no worries about batteries.

I also plan on using the portables for gaming sessions when I'm on business trips (usually 1 week at a time with LOTS of down time in the evenings - much more than I ever get at home). So I would love to have full-blown RPG console-type games available on the PSP (and DS). But in the mean time, I find myself playing "pick up and play" games at home - Hot Shots Golf and Lumines for PSP, and Zoo Keeper, Yoshi, and Mario 64 for DS. As other have said, though, ANY portable game requires the ability to save, if not anywhere, then in no more than 5 or 10 minute intervals. I haven't actually had the nerve to take my DS or PSP on the road with me yet - they seem too valuable and delicate for that. So far I've been taking the SP with me. My next trip I just might take the DS though.

Oh yeah, to stay on topic - I've never been a big Sonic fan, but Sonic Rush sounds like a good DS title. I was worried for a bit about the future of the DS, but it seems it will be just fine with all the games recently announced.

Heh, thanks... Just to elaborate a bit - when I first got the PSP and had Untold Legends it was still fairly cold here. We have one of those switch-activated gas fireplaces. So I'd flip on the fire, turn off all the lights, sit on the rocker-glider (that my wife got when she was first pregnant), kick up my feet, and play for a few hours before bed. Sweet... Really set the tone for that game (especially when you walked around the crackling fires in the dungeons).

Midway published them. I know they could go with Hitz, but I was always partial to the Gretzky series since it was one of the first games I played on the 64, and it got played to death

I've been playing Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls for a long time and i'd have to say that I wouldn't play this game half as much as I have it was on a console. I think FFX would be completely different, but you can put a long complex game on a portable and have it work. FF:DoS is successful in that it has a save anywhere feature, battles are short, it has collectables (beastiary, special armor), and the story isn't too involved. I see your point though.

The problem with the PSP is that it seems to ignore the fact that it's a portable. It's trying to do what's on the consoles, but the consoles can do it better. Then you add the fact that it's harder to develope for and it's too expensive for casual gamers and you can see why it has a good chance of not meeting expectations.

On topic: I always give Sonic a chance and he dissapoints me everytime, but since everyone else is doing it, count me in. Don't crucify me for this, but I think the graphics might actually look better in Rush than in the early build of Super Mario Bros. DS.

It was pretty good at the Sega booth using both screens for sonic to run along. I'm glad they didn't try to force some half-assed touch screen controls on it.

Heh... I, the non-fan of Sonic, am so excited about this game that I'm playing through my old Sonic titles. That limits things to Sonic 2 for Genesis and Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast (can't find my Game Gear), but if I finish those with time to spare, there's always emulators and the Sonic Mega Collection Plus if I can't find the Genesis carts for cheap.

Sorry to bring up a 2+ year old topic.. lol but this seemed to be more or less an official thread.

So I bought this game with a $5 coupon at Best Buy when it was $15 (for $10 + $5 PriceGrabber..woot Sonic Rush = $5) back in February..and I just got around the past few days to picking it back up and FINISHING it 100% (I left off after world 2..so yeah lol)

Seriously. Great game! VERY much old school feel..I know it's pretty old now..but this absolutely has to be an awesome example of what Sonic was. I'm kind nervous about the upcoming "Sonic Rush ADVENTURE"..Ugh..hope they stick with what they did right the first time around.

So, anyone else who hasn't posted in this thread in the past 2 years..played it AND loved it?!
