I just got a PS2 and am looking for some good cheapass games to get started on my collection. I'm thinking about getting the first Devil May Cry, but have a few questions about it as I'm too cheap to rent it:

-My friend said that all the moves in the game you have to discover for yourself? Is this true? If so that sounds all kinds of not cool.

-Is there any button mashing (hitting the same button repeatedly as fast as possible) in the game ala God of War? Because that really turned me off of that game.

-Is it still that good by today's standards? It got great reviews, but that was 4 years ago. Is it worth just saving my money for another game or even DMC 3 when it drops in price?

-and about Devil May Cry 3; I hear the game is extremely difficult, and I like hard games in short bursts, but can someone give me a good estimate of just how far back you'll have to replay when you get a gameover (assuming you die at the end of a level)? Because if it's over 10-15 minutes I'm scared.

Other games I'm considering.

-Maximo & the Army of Zin
-Jak & Daxter: The Precurser Legacy
-Ratchet & Clank 2, or 3

These games look cool, but just wanted to put any fears to rest before spending more money on games. Thanks.

I've never been a huge fan of the DMC series, but I seem to be in a small minority on that one. I've got Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (the 2nd game in the series) in mint condition and would be willing to send it your way for $10 shipped. PM me if you're interested. It's a tremendously fun game.

By all means, purchase DMC. Even today, I consider it one of the best games on the PS2. You could buttonsmash in the game, yet that's definitely not the way to go. You do need to do certain combos to advance in some levels of the game. Go out and get it, one of the best blind buys I ever did.

There's a ton of "must-haves" for the PS2 including

Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Jak & Daxter, MGS2, MGS3, GTA3, GTA:VC, GTA:SA, Sly Cooper, Sly 2, Hot Shots Golf Fore!, SSX3, Katamari Damacy, God of War, Devil May Cry, Burnout 3, Tony Hawk (any), etc... you've got a lot of catching up to do... have fun.

it was one of the few flaws in the game for me, continuous button mashing. I'm fine with button mashing, but not for like 5 - 10 minutes straight. the part before the pandora's box with the conveyor belts comes to mind. I don't think OP got to that point in the game yet either. I guess I'm not alone thinking that god of war is a great game, but not the ridiculously awesome game that many others claim it to be.

as for must haves, if you're an RPG fan, FFX is a must have, even if it's arguable whether or not if it's better than FF7/FF6, it's still a pretty well polished game. I haven't gotten to the SMT: Nocturne or DDS yet, so I can't speak for those.

DMC series never really interested me at all, due to it being overly frustrating... though I do say that DMC3 was pervertedly hard, but with the amount of effort I put in, it was quite fun. Also, the game can be overwhelming the first week or so of playing, but after that, it becomes second nature.

some game recommendations:

Metal Gear Solid 2/3
Ico
Tekken Tag Tournament/Tekken 5
Soul Calibur II
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Sly 2
Gitaroo Man
... and too many other titles to think of...

it would help if you gave input on what genres really interest you.

I've been playing on Spartan difficulty, and I can tell you right now that from what I've seen, button mashing = death.

It will leave you open for some big damage attacks... I find it alot better to bust out some heavy damage combos and take the enemies out efficiently, rather than wail on the square button. I tried to button mash in the beginning, and the very first fight in Athens (the 4 skeletons you can't grab outside the ship) tore me to pieces every time.

It's only until I learned how to counter, roll, and bust out the right combos that I was able to make them my bitches.

I've already got/ordered Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, & Ico. And I'm going to pick up a copy of Ratchet 3 today or tomorrow at EB too.

Genres that interest me are: action-adventure games, plain action games, plain adventure games, platformers, shooters, and real-time strategy games.

Genres I don't care for are: turn-based RPGS (as well as turn-based strategy games), sports games, fighting games, and most racing games (though I'd consider Burnout 3 when it drops in price).

FFX is more of a movie than a game.

Ratchet and Clank 2 is way better than 3.

Fatal Frame II is the best horror game ever.

Red Faction is a good cheap FPS game.

Does anyone else feel Ratchet 2 is better than 3? Because EvilMrEgg is giving me a hell on offer.

Good, cheap action game? Seek & Destroy! Funny little game with these little tanks...and there is actually a lot to do in this game. Can be found quite cheap. Great action-adventure games that can be had for cheap include Rygar, and the Onimusha series, especially Onimusha 3.

And here's a few other reccomendations:
- Ace Combat 4 or 5 (great flght sim [could be considered a shooter])
- Ape Escape 2 (great, really unique platformer)
- Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu (suprisingly good beat-em-up)
- Beyond Good & Evil (incredible adventure game...buy this one. Can be had at Best Buy for $5, with the $5 PSP/PS2 coupon (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45296))
- Gungrave and Gungrave Overdose (two insane, brain-rattling action games)
- Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil (beautiful platformer)
- Kya: Dark Lineage (decent platformer, especially if you can find it at Toys R Us, where it should ring up $1.99)
- Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (difficult platformer...remember Ghosts and Goblins? This is it's spiritual successor)
- MegaMan X8 (easily the better of the two X games on PS2)
- Primal (really tops adventure game. One of my favorites. Don't let it's "gothic" look fool you, cause it's not really like that; it's really quite silly at times)
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (action-adventure masterpiece. Avoid it's sequel, POP: Warrior Within.)
- R-Type Final (masterpiece of a horizontally-scrolling shooter)
- Gradius V (see above)
- Castle Shikigami (another great shooter)
- Silpheed: The Lost Planet (suprise! Another great shooter. Also vertical.)

You didn't mention a preference or dislike of action RPGs, but if you do like them, I'd definately reccomend Kingdom Hearts and Dual Hearts (no relation).

Well, they totally differ when it comes to gameplay, IMO 3 is slower and harder, and 2 has the fun run&gun platformer gameplay.

But 3 has free online multiplayer with vehicles.

You might like the PS2 Version of Castlevania. I never played it though. Try the Onimusha games too. Onimusha 2 is only for $10 new and 3 is for $15. MGS3 is a great game and I'm glad that you decided to pick it up. The best PS2 game that I ever played.

If you button mash in God of War on anything higher than Normal difficulty you will get your ass handed to you.

Id nab Kingdom Hearts, Castle Shikigami 2 and Monster Hunter (to be played solely online). There thats at least 3 months of solid gaming for about 65 bucks.

.

If you're going to get Ratchet 3 at EB as part of the "2 GH games for 30" sale, I hope you have a second game picked out... EB won't sell just one for 14.99.

You might as well get Ratchet 2 and 3 for 30 when you go, or PM Ratchet 3 at CC and get it for 17.99.

I might try Onimusha 3 somewhere down the line. I hear the first 2 have RE style controls which really turns me off, but the third sounds better. I'm more into buying games for quality over quantity right now, so I'm trying to narrow it down to just a few titles on my wish list.

You might like Contra: Shattered Soldier.

I loved it, but opinions are split. It should be real cheap by now.

If you like shoot em ups, Castle Shikigami 2 is great for only 9.99 at EB and Gamestop.

RYGAR!

And Jak & Daxter and the Sly series. I'm currently playing through Jak 1 and its one of the better platformers I've ever played.

I love the Onimusha series, you can get 1 & 2 for from EB online for $6 each AC. The movement is limited to the D-Pad but its better/faster than RE movement. All 3 are great, especially 3 but I'd still pick the original over it because of the whole time travel story.

I PM'd CC and got 2 copies of Ratchet 3 for $30 (they don't do the 110% thing when it's a buy 2 deal). I was going to sell one here, but it seemed like everyone and their mother already knew about this deal, so I went to ebay; if for no other reason to get over my crippling fear of selling games on ebay.

I haven't opened my copy yet as I'm not sure if I'm even going to keep it. I hear the controls are a little loopy. But my question is this: Is Ratchet & Clank 3 even worth it without a network adapter? I'm mostly into single player gaming, so would I be best off selling/ returning Ratchet 3, and buying Ratchet 2 for $10? Or is Ratchet 3 a great game anyway and worth it for its single player alone?

well the NA used is only 13.50 and I would say it is worth it.

UYA has a pretty good MP component that is ruined by the high amount of kids that play the game. I really enjoyed the beta, but after playing with a ton of kids I got turned off. Though with that said, there are a lot of older people playing as well, and when playing with them, the game is a hell of a lot of fun

UYA is definately a good pick-up for single player action as well. I must agree with a few of the previous posters in saying that 2 is a little more fun/innovative--- but I played 3 after two, so most of the things that they put I had already seen done (sometimes better, in two)...

If it's your first Ratchet game, then I think you'll be wowed, and will enjoy it a lot. Though try and find 2 when you have a chance.
