Anyone pick this up today?
Gamestop.com is back ordered already it seems, and the local GS only got in one copy (which I was lucky to snag today).
The general consenus is that MS 4 is pretty subpar, but that Metal Slug 5 is a damn fine game. 39.99 for the package seems a bit pricey, but I'd rather not wait so I can save myself the time tracking this game down in the future.
It's gotten pretty good reviews so far, 7.5's and 8's (which is good for two ports of some old 2D games) so if you're interested, get to it.

Concidering the hit I took to my bank account and the fact that my local game store closed (I'll miss your low prices "32nd st. games"!) I'm going to have to wait for a deal on it rather than dropping 40 bucks on it.

I read in a review that the game gives you unlimited continues, hense making the difficulty of the game pointless, since a 5 year old could beat it with enough time. Is there an option to switch this mode off?

I'm waiting for the Xbox version as well.
I pretty much stoped buying SNK games for the PS2 after KOF:MI
The Xbox versions are always alot better and worth the wait.

I guess the point would be to then get good at the game by 1 crediting it. Metal Slug X used infinite continues as well, if I recall correctly. Plus, if you die, you lose all the hostages you've rescued, so there is *some* incentive... but not much.
You can blame so many whiny babies complaining about Metal Slug 3's continue system for SNK to go back and use infinite continues.
I haven't played my copy yet, but apparently there's no way to turn off the infinite continues. I assume the continue system will be the same on the Xbox one as well.
How hard can it be to add an option to turn this shit off?
(Only reason I didn't get this for Xbox is because mine broke, and I see zero reason to get one now... I might as well just wait for Xbox 360, and get the games I missed for Xbox very cheap.)

I know in the GBA version, if you collected a certain card and used it, it was considered a one shot one kill. And if you did die (with or without the card), you never got to keep anything you have collected in the previous levels....its kinda hard for me.

Yea.. there's 1002 prisoners to get in each game, and if you die ONCE you lose all the prisoners you've collected.
Different prisoners appear depending on how well you're doing in the level, as well.

Saving the prisoners suck. It never was an incentive to go back and play the game. I just ended up going back and playing when I wanted to have fun and not have to solve some lame ass puzzle in some other game.

.
Not quite sure what you're expecting... PS2 has no load times, and I'm not sure how the Xbox is going to have "better graphics" when these games are years old to begin with.

Metal Slug 4 isn't nearly as bad as that guy is saying in that GameFAQ's thread...
Metal Slug 5 is pretty awesome, though.

Why?
It's not like it's going to be rare, and you just spent $80 on an old ported arcade game.

This is true, but its still bullshit.
The only thing I can think of is that SNK simply ported 4 and 5 to the ps2, infinite continues and all, and will add in Metal Slug 3's continue system to 4 and 5 for the Xbox since they got to do it essentially from the ground up.
I know I'd buy another copy.

or you can use some creativity:
a drinking game! every continue, take a shot. First one on the floor loses (for 2-player)
or for the straight edge homeys: every continue crush your hand with a hammer!

Honestly, I'm not sure why this is such a huge deal.
Just, for a moment, read something from someone like me who is not an l337 gamer. If this is so important to you, stop complaining and Just. Don't. Buy. It.
I often try games like Otogi, Ninja Gaiden, and other games that, frankly, are far to difficult to be accessible to me, and simply didn't buy them. I also didn't log into this forum and harp over and over again about how the difficulty is 'lame' or some such.
In this case, the infinite continues will make the ENDING of these games accessible to me, and I'll actually get to spend time with each and every level. Possibly getting a chance to improve as I see fit. Perhaps I want to practice to the point where it only takes me 10 continues to play through.
If you want, every time you die, you can just start the whole game over again. In my opinion the sense of personal achievement should still be the same, even though some 'lamer' like me also got to see the end of each game.

The Difference between games like Otogi & Ninja Gaiden to games like Contra & Metal Slug is mostly the length. While the 1st 2 take 10-15 hours to beat, the latter two could be beaten in under an hour without an extreme difficulty. That's what games like Metal Slug and Contra have going for them. Ask any gamer about Contra, and he will tell you either 1 or 2 things. #1 is the infamous life code, and #2 is it's so fucking hard!
By giving somebody unlimited continues, you sort of take the challenge and even the magic out of the game. It's simply not the way it was meant to be played. Does anybody really play Metal Slug to view the ending? No, they play it for the old school arcade challenge.

Compared MS3 on the Xbox to MS4and5 for the PS2. It looks a lot less pixel-y, like they applied a antialias filter to the game.
