View Full Version : What are the rules for "return to sender"?

I placed an order on newegg about three hours ago, and I got home a little while ago to see it had already shipped. Great, right? Well...not really. I had two items in my shopping cart...one was a wireless B adapter, one was a wireless G adapter. They were both the same manufacturer, and in the shopping cart looked pretty much the same. I accidentally ordered the wrong one (removed the right one from my cart...d'oh!) so I called newegg. They told me that the only thing I could do was call FedEx with my tracking number and have the package refused. So, I got the tracking number and called FedEx.

The lady said they couldn't do that, and that I'd have to wait for it to be delivered and tell the carrier that I didn't want the package. I tried calling FedEx again, and this guy told me that once the tracking number was in the system (it wasn't yet) they could try to stop its delivery, but it wasn't guaranteed. I doubt I'll catch the FedEx guy, so what can I do? Can I write "return to sender" and drop it off at a FedEx facility or what? Stupid mistakes are pricey  I just don't want to be committing any kind of fraud here, and I have no intentions of opening the package before trying to send it back.

Even with FedEx you think? I could see doing it with USPS, but I'm not so sure how FedEx would take to it. I guess if worst came to worst I could just say that that person doesn't live there (I just moved in, so it may work unless they wanted to ID me :? ).

Ok,

I know you should be able to do two things.

Check the website and when its in the "on the truck for delivery" mode you should be able to stop at a manned Fedex office and refuse the package the clerk can message the driver and let him/her know.

The second thing would be to write refused on the packag if you miss the driver and dont make the facility and drop it off unopened.

I would give it a day and then call fedex to see if there are alternate options.

Yeah I don't think its a problem. Just right return to sender. but then again how do you know that once they get it back an employee won't keep and say they never got it? You might want to email them then send it back in a diff box with D.C. Just so you and they know it was sent back and you can get the other one.

This is what you should do. Write a letter stating I want to refuse this package from them to me with tracking number X. Tape it to your door. The fedex guy will see it and put the package back on the truck to get returned to newegg. I would not accecpt the package and try to return to sender later.

So you think that if I miss the FedEx guy I can just take it to a FedEx Authorized Ship Center (Postal Annex) and have it sent back? As far as an employee taking it for themselves, FedEx would still show the item as sent back unopened so it wouldn't really make much sense for someone to try and steal it. Frankly, I rather leave it sealed in the box (showing that I didn't even touch the product) rather than swap boxes (thus allowing someone to say that I shipped back something else, or nothing at all...maybe CloudSpekk works at FedEX, who knows).

That's actually a really good idea assuming the guy sees the note. I think I'll give that a try, and if worst comes to worst and he doesn't see it I will just try something else. Thanks for the tip.

Now that that is settled, I'm just kind of bugged that my card has already been charged the $57 and I have to wait for a refund...guess that's kind of good though, like a little savings account. The less money I have, the less I can spend...and that's fine by me.

You should've invited her in and asked her to help spread a little sour cream on your potato.
