That Arc the Lad Complete Collection is mighty tempting. I see they have the Blue Seed Complete Collection in again. I'll definitely be picking up that one later today. Man, this time around they have so much stuff I actually want. So much stuff, so little money.

I've been ordering pretty regular from their daily sales (about 10 orders in the past month) and have had no serious problems. Same goes for the mother's day sale. I did have 2 oddities. First I ordered Megazone 23 discs 2 and 3. I received 2 copies of disc 3. They said they are sending a copy of disc 2 and I can keep the extra. 2nd today I got the Southern Cross boxset from them. In the bag with it was a loose dvd of disc 4 in the set. I opened the set and it has disc 4 inside also so I have 2 of them now.
Wow, that is a good price for Arc the Lad complete collection. I may need to get that one (finally).

Appleseed was made by Geneon, i thikn Geneon is the publisher.
product bar codes may be reconfigured, replaced or physically altered (including by means of cutting, punching or drilling)
What would they have to drill !

Yeah they do drill the upc. A tiny hole in the UPC, even on box sets. It doesn't bother me at all, I just want cheap anime so I keep ordering from them. When I bought a stuffed Menchi since he didn't have a UPC they opened his bag, but the toy was untouched.
They are also a bit slow sometimes but I have gotten everything I have ordered so far. Actually the shipping has been odd. I will get nothing for a week or 2, then suddenly get everything I have ordered in that period at once. Today I got 4 separate packages from them. Yesterday I got 1. Before that I got nothing for like 14 days.

Hmmmm, how is Neo Ranga? Is is worth buying?
If you do not mind having Hole Punched Promo CD cases and Drilled through artwork on your DVD cases, then this sale is for you. Otherwise avoid these ADV sales at all costs as their customer service sucks and if you are any sort of collector that likes mint stuff, you will surely be dissappointed.

Well what do you like? Action? Humor? Everything?
Here are some of my favorites from the sale:
I enjoyed Arc the Lad. It also helps that I played the games so seeing characters from the games were fun.
Aura Battler Dunbine is an excellent mecha show if you like those.
Devil Lady is a horror anime. Not a bad show and worth the $20 for like 26 eps.
Dragon Half is fantasy/humor and has some great moments.
Genesis Climber Mospeada and Southern Cross are old fashioned mecha shows (and the ones that were used to make Robotech after the Macross saga)
King of Bandit Jing is a funny show.
Robotech Macross Collection is a must buy if you have never seen it.
The 3 Slayers movies they have are good. I like the series better but they are fun fantasy/humor.
Soul Hunter complete collection is a great buy for 14.99. Since it's another 20something (probably 26) episode show that isn't bad.
I have the money, but no idea what to buy???

Let me put it this way... My friend Monica worked on the show, and she says it's the worst show she's ever been cast in. So, no, it isn't worth buying.

During a previous sale I picked up seasons 3-5 of Earth: Final Conflict. The only "problem" with the DVDs was that the UPC codes had a pin sized hole in them, which I didn't mind at all.
Also, I recomend getting the Gamera: Complete DVD Collection (http://www.advfilms.com/CatalogFilms_Detail.asp?ID=245). Those three Gamera films are easly some of the best Kaiju films of modern times. Anyone who has any intrest in seeing a giant monster movie should pick them up.

I've been ordering from them pretty regularly myself.
At these prices, I don't mind the small drill hole. I buy this crap to watch, not to display in a museum.
The only problem I've had was I ordered a Noir box set, and the box was crushed when I got it. I had accidently ordered another one (stuff takes so long to arrive, I forget what I order), and it was fine. So I traded in the crushed one, and got more than what I paid for it in store credit.
I just placed a $150 order myself, and I still have crap from Mother's day to watch.
I bought the first Nadia collection from the mothers day sale to see if it was any good. I love the show (as do my kids), now I wish I bought both sets, as the second set doesn't appear to be a part of this sale. oh well.

You can get the Nadesico Essential Anime DVD's for about 23 total bucks at Bestbuy. Vols 1-2 are 7.99 and Vol 3 is 6.99. Plus they fixed the hard subtitle overlays they used to cover up the writing in the original realese.

I received the thinpak collection with the big seed thing on the cover and the ribbed veiny stuff all over. the drilling was very well done, it only cut a small 1mm sized hole in the UPC, and unfortunately nicked the plastic of the front of the case for vol 4. however, it didnt even touch the art for vol 4, just the clear plastic.
very good value.

I've already ordered the Blue Seed Complete Collection, but this is the movie to the series correct?
http://www.advfilms.com/CatalogFilms_Detail.asp?ID=63
Also, I think I've seen two other movies at Suncoast and Fry's, so umm...how many are there?
Also, seeing as rightstuf is having a 40% off ADV sale on anime, which is the better version, the Blue Seed Perfect Collection DVD Set or the Blue Seed Complete Collection ThinkPak set. The former is roughly $33 at rightstuf and the latter is $23 at ADV with their current sale which is right around what I'm willing to pay. Is there any difference between the two at all?

Well I can't say for absolute certain, but as far as I know Blue Seed Beyond was the only movie, which is actually like a 3-part OVA, to hit DVD. Also I know the Perfect Collection and original releases had the omake theater things on it, but according to adv's site the thinpak complete collection does as well so they appear to basically be the same.

O.K., so let me ask all you anime afficianodos one last question, I've been really reading up on the Soul Hunter series and it seems to be pretty good from what I have heard. ADV has it in this sale for $14.99 for the complete series which seems to be a pretty good price point for IMO. Would you guys recommend it/what is it like?.
Also, I decided just to go with rightstuf and hard case Blue Seed Complete Collection since from what you guys have told me, there's no difference between the two and I prefer hard cases to sleeves.
Duo_Maxwell
05-30-2005, 02:42 AM
I never really thought of Thinpak cases as sleeves, but whatever's clever I guess. As for Soul Hunters I watched most of it on DVD when it came out a couple years back. It was kind of a mixed bag. It gets off to an odd and difficult start, then it got better, but I found the ending to leave a lot to be desired. Maybe it was a little too quirky or it was the fact that I didn't really get all the Chinese mythology references, it just didn't gel with me. I don't know how to compare it with something else or describe other than to say it's quirky adventure series with magic and action and the like set in ancient China.

Never mind, unless somebody posts some coupon code for free or discounted shipping or finds a way to change shipping for $6.00 shipping to something around $3 or so, than I'm just going to order the Blue Seed Beyond OVA/movie from DDDVD since they have it for $11 with free shipping. Would have liked to get the soundtrack with it also, but that $6 shipping just kills it for me.

Well instead of ordering Blue Seed thin pack from them and the movie, I went through rightstuf for the perfect collection with the hard dvds (I tend to like hard dvds over slim packs or sleeves) and Blue Seed Beyond through DDDVD. Probably could have gone with both through DDDVD since they have the complete collection marked at the same price like rightstuf, but I have rightstuf's anime membership. Came to a lot cheaper than going through the ADV sale and their astronomous shipping. Only thing I regret is that I didn't get the soundtrack that ADV had, but I'll just find it elsewhere.

Just so ya know I believe the Perfect Collection came packed in one big alpha-pak case, or at least it used to. Meaning it won't have an indvidual cases for each one. No big deal, just thought you should know in case you didn't already cuz you seemed kinda concerned about the packaging.

Umm..what do you mean exactly by "one big alpha-pak case"? Is it the type of case that the Dai Gard Complete Collection came in? If so than I'm cool with it. I just don't really like thin packs/sleeves. And thanks for all the info so far man.

Yep, same as Dai-Guard's Perfect Collection (with less discs though obviously), unless they changed it as it's been a while since I saw one in any stores...but I really doubt that, otherwise releasing the thinpak edition was kinda pointless then.

and you should only order from ADV when you've got a large list, otherwise it isnt cost effective. but, when they sell things like the complete Nadesico collection for ten bucks, they can charge me whatever the hell they want for shipping, wouldnt you think?

I think it's to make it so people don't order them then try to re-sell them or something, but there's really nothing to stop people from just sticking a new barcode on it or just putting a price sticker on the front.

Its so you cant return them to a retail store for full price.

I think it's to make it so people don't order them then try to re-sell them or something, but there's really nothing to stop people from just sticking a new barcode on it or just putting a price sticker on the front.
It's actually so retailers cant buy them at a below wholesale rate from ADV and then turn around and return it to them through retail channels as unsold stock and get refunds. Especially when most of these sales are due to retailers returning more unsold stock than ADV knows what to do with.
For example, if retail prices for a standard DVD volume of a random anime series cost retail stores 12 dollars, and they sell it for $30, they would normally make $18 profit, and ADV would make those $12, minus expenses.
If that particular dishonest retailer decided to take advantage of these sales and buy that same DVD volume for 6$ (without drill holes), they could:
1) Sell the retail-bought stock for $30 (ADV gets $12)
2) Buy ADV sale items for below wholesale based on what was sold. (ADV gets $6)
3) Return the ADV sale items as "unsold retail stock", meaning they'd get their 12 bucks back. (ADV loses $12)
Essentially, unscrupulous retailers could make extra money on the side by taking advantage of sales meant to clear inventory. the drill holes mark it as a product that has been sold directly from them at an obscene discount.
This was an individual example, but you could imagine how bad it could be for business when you've got ADV selling Nadesico complete sets for 10 bucks during sales, and then buyers who deal in bulk.
Anyway, long story short, drill holes = cheap anime. I remember when I was younger, my local comic shop would sell comics that were normally 1.50-4.95 for 10 cents, just to clear out space. the only thing was we had to deal with markers crossing through the UPC. same thing. If you don't like it, dont buy it.
Blade
06-28-2005, 02:11 PM
That makes sense, but I could still sell them on ebay. They basically drilled holes in my stuff for nothing. ;)
I'm keeping these, but on the next sale I could ebay them and make a profit.
