Well, on Tuesday I'm going into Basic Training for the Coast Guard. I'm sure nobody cares too much about it, but I'm sure there will be one person over the next 2 months who wonders where I am. I would also like to hear from others who have gone through it, and hear any pointers you may have. I'll miss being on here just about every waking minute of the day, but I've been doing that for around eight months now.

That's awesome man. Congrats with your decision to do something in your life that'll make a difference. Stay strong out there and remember what the USMC say:

Pain is the feeling of weakness leaving the body.

Have fun. I went through basic with the army, not sure of the differences. My advice to you is to not let them get to know your name. If they know your name you are doing something wrong. If you have an opinion keep it to your self, if they wanted you to have one they'd give it to you.

And never polish your boots so they look better than the drill instructors.

Thanks for serving your country.

We also have this saying: Pain is temporary, pride is forever.

Edit: 16 weeks of training for basic what did you join? Marine Corps is 12 weeks of training, then Marine Combat Training is about 2-3 weeks, I took 4 because I was awaiting training because I went in during peak season (summer), so it was winter when I was in MCT waiting to actually do anything. Then went to Military Occupational Specialty School (MOS) and that took 3 months as well.

We didn't have weekends off during basic, but I do know other branches like the army do. I do not know about the Coast Guard though. Katt is joining the Air Force during the summer, so she is the next to go. The military life is not a bad one, but of course there are hardships that you will have to overcome. Just remember, that no matter what branch you are in, you still represent the United States and all of its people. Take honor, courage, and commitment with you. You will meet up with shitbirds, personnel in the military that should not be wearing the uniform. Steer clear from those, and always maintain your uniform and be proud of wearing it. You are doing what some won't do. Pride in excess is a sin, so you will have to be humble also. I know it seems contradicting what I am saying, but you will understand.

You'll do great in basic and in your technical school. Most of all try to enjoy yourself, whenever you feel down or if you think you won't make it, think of those that are counting on you and waiting for you to come back home. Don't get discouraged. Don't do the minimum. Strive to be the best. Good luck, and God bless st0neface.

Unless things have changed the Army does not have off time on the weekends during basic training. But I went through it back in '95.
