View Full Version : Is Sony no longer using factory seals on the top of PS2 games?

This has been mentioned briefly in a few other threads but I wanted to know the deal about this without causing those other threads to go off topic. When I was at Best Buy recently I noticed that NOT ONE of the following games had top factory seals: Area 51, Cold Winter, MX vs. ATV Unleashed, Lego Star Wars, and Motocross Mania 3. ESPN MLB had some copies with the seal and some without. It has been reported that Stella Deus doesn't have the seal as well.
So what's the deal? Is this only affecting third party games or are Sony first party games also without seal now? Anyone know why Sony decided the seal wasn't important anymore? Are they just taking a (rather misguided) cue from Nintendo?
Sony's import game doesnt have the seal, but it does have sony mark on the warping.

Well, regarding your Nintendo comment, compared to the pretty much standard DVD cases Sony and MS use, Nintendo's Scanavo-provided cases are much harder to steal from, despite the lack of security seal.

Thing is, without the seal, it is much more difficult to tell if a product is truly new vs a re(shrink) wrap. Sure a Sony mark on the plastic wrap would help, but the seal is IMHO better. Dunno maybe it is just me (I save the seal and it put inside the case).

Despite not having the security seal anymore, it is fairly easy to tell if the game has been re-shrinkwrapped of not.

For the most part, yes. Though all copies of certain games seem to be reshrinkwrapped. For example, check out all the copies of Scrapland for XBox at Best Buy. At every BB I've been to, all copies of the game look reshrinkwrapped (though I'm pretty sure they came from the factory that way). Same thing with any copies of older Ubisoft GameCube games (XIII and Worms come to mind).
