My pick is 6. Best story. Best characters. Best battle system. Best graphics for a 2D system. And the most fun to play.

I'd have to say FF 9 is my favorite, as it was the first rpg i ever really played.
I love them all, but 6 was the first I played, so it holds a special place in my heart (left ventricle, I think).

In order:
6, 7, Tactics, 9, 4, Mystic Quest, 11
I hated 8, as a FF game. If it were a standalone RPG, I might have enjoyed it. Just didn't keep the momentum that the series had started. A real buzzkill. It had some of the coolest summons too,... a real shame.
10 was just horrid. Linear and pretty. Nothing phenomenal, with an ending that took the award for worst EVER in my book. AND NO,... after 2 hours into 10-2, I didn't want to find out what happened to Tidus. (Although, I did want to dress up like dancer) COVERGIRL!!

#4 is probably my all time favorite game. Great story, music and characters. I wish everyone went gaga over it like VII, i'd love to seem them revisit those characters and make a bunch of spinoff games.

this is going to get ugly... 6 was a wonderful game, but i love 7... there was nothing else like it when it came out. watching the opening movie was amazing, the commercials on tv were amazing. in fact, when ff7 came out i was in a point in my life where i wasnt gaming, i didnt have any systems, it was if i stopped... but this game came out and i bought a psx, ff7 and gameday 98 (not quite as good)... and now im back into gaming full force

iheartmetal............. strange you say that.
I sold my launch PS1, and pretty much stopped gaming. Then, during I think the Superbowl, I saw the commercial.
I picked up my new PS1 and FF7 with my dad, and got him Gameday 97, used along with my stuff. He was handicapped, and loved Super Play Action Football on the SNES. As he could only stay inside mostly. Gameday blew him away.
Too bad he never got to see Madden.
That sparked up my gaming life again for certain.

agreed about mystic quest.
it's hard to argue with VI, it's really the only one with a female lead character, great character development (i sure was more into these characters than Cloud, Squall, monkey boy or the trite and annoying tidus- tho i beat and enjoyed all these games...cept for 8 ), the music was good, the opera scene is one of the best in gaming history, and the magic system was fun (tho lopsided towards the end).
Shadow's theme? nuff said.

Well,.... it was the only FF my family could afford to buy for me and my brother, asshat.
When you have to borrow games, like FF6, just to see them,.... you'd get into just about anything you could.
At $70-90 a game, we were sitting pretty on MQ.
Sitting in my attic all summer long playing that game made me appreciate it, whereas you fortunate silverspooners were probably at your beachhomes getting handjobs from hot latin women.
Eat my ass,... twice.
BTW,... I have the best taste in most matters,... you just Ito'd me, that's all.

7 was the most commercially succesfull. Play 3/6 on revolution when it comes out. All of squares games from snes days were the best. Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 2 and 3. The charecter development in any of the games that have come out afterward has yet to match there earlier works. Of which 3 is the best by majority those who played them. Even in Japan 3 or 6 is voted the best. This vote has been held before and it's usually the same. 7 wins because more people played it buy most if not all people who remember 3 know it's the best. With 2 being dam close.

I do beleive you meant Relm's theme.....
Enough said.
And yeah,... the opera scene still holds magic for me.
Finding out that you could've saved Shadow,... AFTER you beat the game,.... most joyous moment of all time. Getting to play the masterpiece all over again. Then,... finding out that you could catch FRESH fish, and not kill the old man.
What a game.

Didn't see this mentioned, but I highly doubt Square will put it's old games on the Revolution... espically when they can update the graphics, charge full price, and have people buy it from them so they get 100% of the profits.

Although I believe that FF7 is one of the greatest games ever made, I'd still have to say that FF6 is the best entry in the series overall. I've spent so much time playing both of them and it's difficult to pick one over the other. The original on NES was great for its time and was my first experience w/ an RPG.
All the FFs up to IX deserve to played. Once graphics became the most important aspect the series has declined. I felt X and X-2 were shallow games, the first truly produced to cater to a mass audience and not RPG or FF fans.
Great:
FF6
FF7
FF5
FF1
FF4
Good:
FF3 (played/finished this on DC)
FF8
FF2
FF9
Poor:
X/X-2

my first rpg was FF 6 I had to watch my older brother play it until he beat it. After he beat it it was my turn and I fell in love. Part 7 made my cry because how good it looked (at the time) and I loved every minute of it . But part 6 wow that game was freekin awesome. From most of the final fantasys I played it had that branching part where your team gets divided into 3 groups that was the best part.
The characters where great , not one of them was useless ( hmm maybe that sketch girl ) . The music was the best and my favorite monster name of all ( with the one if not the best boss theme ever ) ATMA WEAPON.

Square gave a lot of compliments to revolution at e3. Very possible that they'll give them to revolution owners. Possibly as a gift if you get crystal chronicles but they'll make them availible. Nintendo will fight hard for them so no worry's. Having backwards to nes and not having the final fantasys is like mario kart for ds with no online, Ninteno just won't allow it.

WHAT!? Relm is one of the best magic uses/magic defense. At the end of the game, if you've played it right, you can destroy kefka's tower using just Relm, Celes and Terra.
IF any character was useless in ffvi it was definitely Gau!

when ff7 came out i was in a point in my life where i wasnt gaming, i didnt have any systems, it was if i stopped... ... and now im back into gaming full forceMy story's almost identical, except for me it was FF10 & the beautiful Yuna commercials that re-awakened my desire for gaming. I skipped the N64/PS1 generation completely - jumped straight from a 16-bit Amiga (think genesis) to the 128-bit PS2.
By the way, why do people equate "my first" w/ "the best"??? My first was FF10, but I'd certainly never say it was the best . Best looking babes, but it's weak in all other aspects.

all the ff's after 6 were a big dissapointment to me, lotsa eye candy but other than that, rather drab.
chrono cross was much much better than 7,8,9 and 10.
10 was the biggest disapointment for me, because visually it was spectacular, but gameplay wise and story wise it was lame sauce.
the charcters were so hollow and boring.
Waka? no thank you.

10 was all right, just very hollow I agree. 7 had sufficient charecter development though. Not as good as snes versions, but it deserves a metion as the best game of the playstation versions. As for Gau, you could be right. I leveled him and Sabin up so much they were nearly maxed out. Sabin was my best mage because I leveled him up so much. 7 had the best fighting system in my opinion as well. Hate the job system. Mimic, he by default is the best. Mimic, Sabin, Gau, Terra, Celes, Shadow were my tops. With Edgar, and Cyan approaching in the numbers area. Anway it's no contest. Deryl's tomb, Lock's home town and girlfriend, Shadow Relm and Strago and the secret dreams and hints of their relationship. Sabin and his teacher, Edgar and Sabin's split up. Gau's father. Celes's underground castle scene. The opera scene. And that's just a few.
So much CDevelopment. All others pale in comparison. No contest.

dont forget mimic (i think that was his name).

his name was Gogo, and he was versatile, but he was jack of all trades, master of none. If i wanted blitzes, Sabin was better, if i wanted to steal, locke was faster, even Edgar deals more damage with the chain saw or drill than Gogo.
Terra is the best character far and away, if you max her out, give her the atma weapon and the excalibur, and then morph, you can deal 60,000 damage a turn.
i've beaten if every year for 11 years now, the first couple of years i would beat it 5-6 a year. i've done all the low level walkthroughs and the CES walkthrough (you just use celes, edgar and sabin for the world of ruin) so i'm pretty much done with everything, tho, i do still beat it every year, it's nice and relaxing.

Did you not see the scene with Gau and his father, he is a boy. gogo, he refered to himself as gau gau once, what are you talking about. 7 was pretty balanced. Plus you could alter stats by equiping magnacite at level up. So it's all which charecters you leveled up more. Double check man, his name is the american version at least was Gau.

I need to revisit the old ones-- I haven't beaten 6 yet. I felt like I played X and X-2 just because they were FF games....and I think they should go back to text for the dialogue, causes the voices just kill it for me. Square can make some good characters, but in a storybook way, which doesn't always translate to a movie all that well.
that said, I'm dodging the original question...
but I will say I fucking flipped out when I changed character class for the first time in the original FF. I was probably about 7 at the time and the Ninja blew my mind :)

two different characters, Gau the wild child, Gogo the mimicker.
Gau is discovered on the veldt in the world of balance.
Gogo is discovered inside the Zoneater in the world of ruin.

8 was blasphemy, as well as 10-2.
I am through with Final Fantasy, until they return to the traditional. I'm sick of metrosexuals, who play sports, and listen to rock music, in futuresque worlds.
If they are going to make games like that, at least call them something different.
Look how they ruined Tactics on the GBA,.... what a doop.
Square has so much money, and such a loyal following, that they can make a game about a homosexual peanut butter and jelly sandwich, from 20,000 leagues beneath the sea, who saves Prince Cattle Prod,... with an all reggae/John Denver soundtrack, and slap a $90 price tag on it,... and it'll sell millions.

Vivi's story was so sad, and then empowering. Then, when Alexander defended against Bahamut..... OMFG!!!!

My biggest problem with VII (and on, I suppose) is that if I remember correctly, VII is the first "futuristic" Final Fantasy. They took a game involving strategic fighting with multiple weapons (spears, swords, ninja's throwing things, magic, etc.) and tried to mix it with a world where guns are a reality. That's the problem for me - it lost the "fantasy" part for me because it just didn't work in my mind.
I realize that hoping for the game to be "realistic" with respect to guns when you have people being bombarded by Bahamat calls from the sky is a bit of a double-standard, but having these people in a present/futuristic world was too much of a blurring of the lines for me. It would be like trying to put Frodo and Gandolf and company in today's world to destroy the "One Ring". You'd be like, "Dude, just hop on a plane over to Mordor, then get in a cab and have them drive you up to the foot of the mountain." If you're going to have the mystique of wizards and magic and "calls" you have to have the right setting to go with it, IMO. And if you're going to have guns, one shot needs to kill or severely incapacitate whoever is getting shot. The present or the future is not the right setting for thiis to happen.
Not trying to rant about VII, that's just why I coudn't ever quite get into it.

IX is my pick, it has the charm, feel and well-crafted gameplay of the 2d titles with the technology and allure of the 3d. Somehow it remains pretty underrated within the series.

Definitely going with 3/6. It wasn't the first that I played (FF1), but I can say that it didn't bore me at any point, even when I was levelling up in the Dino Forest. I'm gonna say 8. I'm sure if there weren't so many picky fanboys that didn't judge it simply based on the fact that it didn't feel like the previous games, it would get alot more votes. It was its own game, it's not like there were any sequels in the first place.
EDIT: And you know, now that I think about it, this was the first RPG that I played. I guess that would help sway my opinion.

8 was average. Even reviewers said it. 7-current have no depth in comparison to 2/4 and 3/6. 7 tech demo was neat. But if they wanted to remake 2 or 3 that would be sweet. There are so many things in both games that would make it worth it. And it's 16-bit graphics genius. And I think you're reffering to the first ff when it comes to weak story. 8 was good, but it should not have been a final fantasty it's part of a series dude. Saying it shouldn't have to feel like previous games is not the brightest comment.

I dunno, everyone worships Square like a god, but half of its worshippers barely approve of the Final Fantasy's past 7. I personally trust their judgement, and try not to be too critical. Simply removing the Final Fantasy title from 8 to make it a better game isn't exactly bright either.

if they wanted to remake 2 or 3 that would be sweet. And it's 16-bit graphics genius. Oh I see. You meant 4 and 6. (shrug) It's not my fault you can't use the proper *original release* numbering scheme, as shown in message #1:

3 - original nintendo (japan only)
4 - super nintendo (aka 2-u.s.)
5 - super nintendo (released as FF anthology)
6 - super nintendo (aka 3-u.s.)
When Nintendo mis-labeled FF4 = 2, and FF6 = 3, they really screwed up. (Just like when they replaced the red blood with with white sweat in Mortal Kombat... dumb dumb dumb.) There's no reason for us to carry on Nintendo's incorrect numbering.
I still think the first 3 8-bit games sucked. Final Fantasy with almost no story is quite boring.

They keep getting gayer and gayer.
Why not have a $$$$$$ fantasy???
Nothing wrong with gay people,... but I personally don't feel like being confused about characters' genders all the time. Or being made to feel like it's alright to be gay.
This is Square's main goal now, I beleive.
As MTV pushed as hard as it could to bring interracial, casual encounters to the youth,... Square's pushing the most famous game franchise in the world on us, promoting homosexual acceptance.
I cannot stand crusaders.
I personally don't care who does who.
Black, white, yellow, green, or the rainbow coalition. Sausage duels a-plenty! Who cares???
No one.
BUT,... when the point is finally made, the promotion should end. Kids don't care about this kind of stuff,... or at least they didn't. Now, because of the media, in all shapes and forms, sexuality has become normal for them. They are little gangstas, and pimps. They talk about their hot new rap CDs, and then they go out and act like an adult.
Walking around rapping, and being playas. WTF??
When I was 15, just sneaking beer was pujnishable by the belt. Now, 15 year olds are getting pregnant, doing drugs, committing suicide, shooting each other, and experimenting with much, much more than I even knew about at those ages.
Call me sheltered,.... but I came from the ghetto, and even the hardest brothas in town drew a line. Yeah, we listened to NWA, and Cube, then later Snoop and Method. ,, but we knew what was real, and what wasn't.
Pot,... some kids smoked. Beer,... 40s all around. Coke,.... NEVER! Sex,.... the first kid in my grade who got some was 17,.... that was in 11th grade. Gays,..... none that were open, if any.
Not to say that stuff didn't happen,... but I was cool with almost everyone, and word spreads quick in the ghetto. After rap, we had all kinds of incidents... knifings, shootings, murders, overdoses, drunk driving accidents, parental abuse,..etc.
I forsee Final Fantasy turning all little boys into fairies. Here in Japan, the bisexual/gay men are rampant. It's disturbing, like the current lead characters in the series.
All dolled up, and overly queer.
If you've ever seen a Japanese boy with fake eyelashes, batting them at you, you'd know what I mean.
And Musashi fans,... don't even get me started on Scribe Shanky..... uuuuuhhhhh.
I would like to see Square rerelease some of the older titles, keeping the upgrades to graphics, sound, and FMV.
Not like those HORRID FMVs from the Anthology either.
7.1 fully orchestrated surround sound, 1080i/p reworked palette, and high end cinematics added... that's it.
Maybe some side quests, and extra items, and bonuses,... only as rewards for playing all the way through to add depth and extra replayability.
Revived Aeris and General Leo would be nice. A side story for Vincent and Umaro. Just extra stuff that we'd like, BESIDES the game, and not crammed in, with the option to cram it in.
Ahhhh,... it's so late,... and I've gone places I guess I shouldn't have.

FF2 was the best one, to me.
I think I almost shed a tear when Palom and Porom turned to stone to save everyone.
But FF3 is extremely close behind it.
Couldn't agree with you more. Palom and Porom's moment is a great memory and so was Kain betraying you and stole the crystal. I was very surprised and sad at the same time, I was like how could he do that to me, I thought we were friends. Great memories indeed.

(IMHO it would have made more sense to keep the original numbers and simply say, "We decided not to release 2/3/5 for America." Now because Nintendo mis-labeled the games, many people are thoroughly confused.)
BTW, to the person who complained about Square's gay characters (which there are none): Don't buy the game if it bothers you so much. Vote with your dollars, and Square will stop making gays in their games.

Did you play it when it first came out, or later? At the time, FF1 was fairly revolutionary. The story was quite good (compared to Dragon Warrior 1 or Ultima 2 for example), and there were lots of innovations in the gameplay. I just played through it again a few years ago, and I still enjoyed it, actually (though nostalgia might have been partially responsible).

There's a quick and easy fix for PS2 owners: In the main menu under the PS1 Driver, there's a setup option for "Fast Loading". When you turn that on, the game will load as fast as the original cartridge did. Problem solved."
With fast-loading, you won't experience any slowdown, except when calling summons. It truly amazes me how many people have no clue there's a "fast load" option for PS1 games. It makes these games run much, much faster.

FF Origins (1/2) <---yawn
FF Chronicles (4 - also Chrono Trigger) <---great
FF Anthology (5/6) <---awesome
Note that when you play these games, they actually DO say, "IV" "V" and "VI", in the opening title screen. These are the actual, original Japanese games, translated to English.
Also, because they're Japanese, they're quite a bit harder than the Super Nintendo versions (for example, FF6 doubles the hit points on all bosses).

Story: FF6 ----- Graphics: The newest FF that was just Released(FF22?) ----- Sound / Score: FF7 ----- Coolest Summons: FF6 ----- Battle System: FF6 (real-time & balanced between physical & magical attacks) ----- Characters (both best & most): FF6 ----- BadGuy: FF6 (I love his manaical laugh... besides, he actually succeeded - he burned down civilization!)
So ther eis no way to play 3? Is it just a bad game or something?Well, I'm biased. I think the first 3 on the original 8-bit Nintendo are all bad (not enough story to hold my attention). Still, FF3 is the best of the 8-bit games. It takes the best features of FF1 and FF2, and combines them.
Short Story - You can play FF3 via an illegal download, that was translated from Japanese. The story is rather bland... about as bland as the "Mario beats Bowser" story.
Long Story - FF1 and 2 were upgraded to run on the 16-bit Wonderswan portable, circa 2001. It was easy for Square to write an emulator and run those upgraded games on the PS1 & GBA. (Also, Square lost a lot of money on the Wonderswan games, and they wanted to recover some of it, via targeting PS1's & GBA's ~120 million userbase.)
FF3 was not upgraded, and Square must have thought 8-bits were too primitive for modern audiences. So, it's not available.

Turning on the PS2 fast disc read thingie does help the load times, but they are still painful (same with Chrono Trigger)....they are still no where NEAR a cartridge...and the lag is still very much present in the emulation (esp. Sabin's powers)
My list:
FF6
FF4 (very close, I almost like FF4 better because it doesn't have the everyone can do everything problem like most of the FFs past #5)
Dragon Warrior IV (oops, wrong franchise) :D
FF7
FF9 (none of that everyone can do everything syndrome, back to roots!)
FF10 (great story and some good characters, but LAME difficulty)
FF5
FF1
FF8 (never played more than 10-15 hours of this, ick)
Played only a little of FF2/3.
FF online...err...I mean FFXI not included, it isn't really an RPG in the traditional sense.

FF10 and FF10-2 are roughly equal:
- FF10 has a better story, but weaker fighting system (fixed jobs).
- FF10-2 has a weak story, but a better fighting system (active-time battles, like FF6/7/8/9, and a FF5-style job system).
FF10 was better for story, but FF10-2 had better gameplay. FF10-2 made random battles fun again! My favorite part is the 100-floor dungeon. A real challenge!
BTW, Grand Theft Auto did NOT invent non-linear quests. That style of playing dates back to 1987's Pirates, and possibly earlier. So it's wrong to say FF10-2 copied GTA. FF10-2 was copying earlier games from the 80's.

I don't know. Don't own a "slim" PS2.
But on the original, you turn on the system without a disc. It goes to the floating blue box screen. Select "system settings" followed by "PS1 Driver Options".

OK, um...let's see...favorites:
Final Fantasy Tactics
God, do I love this game. I'm an enormous fan of different jobs and classes, though. This is arguably by favorite Final Fantasy ever.
Final Fantasy VII
I marvel at this game. To this day, I think this is the greatest masterpiece I've ever played. There's just something about it. It had just a plethora of hype, and yet, the game seemed to live up to it. It was constantly entertaining to me. If you got bored, there were dozens upon dozens of side-quests to do. Things never got stale. They always threw unique things in there. Calling the dolpin with that whistle...the huge snake you had to avoid, and having to catch a chocobo....the motorcycle chase...the love-shack hotel segment.
I can't describe how much this game meant to me, in terms of me growing as a gamer. I just fiended on it when it came out. It was the game you had to have. When I played it, I was completely enthralled and go not let go. There's just not enough I can say about this game.
In my opinion, this game was so great simply because things were kept so fresh. I'll give this the nod as my favorite RPG ever.
Final Fantasy 6 (US)
Alright, this game rocked! Very entertaining. Really loved all of the diverse characters you could recruit. Kick. Ass. Game.
Final Fantasy 5 (US)
Basically a fanboy for these job-based games. I absolutely loved how you could use them in an ATB system!
FF1: Haven't really played. Is decent..and respect it for being the mother of this huge series.
FF2: Haven't played.
FF3: Never played.
FF4: Didn't ever really get into it.
FF8: Nah. Didn't like the more serious approach it took over FFVII.
FF9: Was entertaining, but didn't really captivate me as my favorites did.
FF10: Hated it. Seemed watered-down and directed towards a more mainstream audience.
FF10-2: After my pure hatred for FFX, I didn't even bother to play this one. I plan on keeping it that way.

With FF7, you can use graphics smoothing, but the fast loader will make the game crash after about ~1 hour of use. So now I only use fast-loading if a game is slow (like the Super Nintendo ports).

What's the best? I don't really know if I can say since I haven't played all of them. I can say that my favorite (and my favorite videogame of all time) is FF7. That game completely changed how I thought about and played videogames. When it came out I was in 7th grade and I remember going over to my friend's house every night to play it. I still vividly remember the night we finally beat it, and I'm sure that's gonna stick with me for a while.
Before I played FF7, I was never really into RPGS, and playing it opened up a whole new genre to me. After playing it I went on to play FF8, Xenogears, and FFT, and eventually became an RPG addict.
I dont think any game has affected me the way FF7 did (possibly Myth 2: Soulblighter), but I remain hopeful that another game will come along and do so.

I'm not saying they copied it or anything, it's just the influence. GTA created a trend of moving some games to the same kind of non-linear pick-a-quest approach and the wander-around pick-a-quest. Ala the newer Jak and Daxter (I think it was 2), etc.
I like the job system quite a bit for some things...FF5 was pretty good. And having only 1-2 jobs available at once is better than FFVI/FFVII's do-everything problems. But I like characters to have more strengths and weaknesses you have to work with, and less make-them-what-you-want. I don't like seeing dumb fighter characters throwing heal and destroy-stuff spells, etc. Some customization is good, but like the above person said except I don't like it...Barrett throwing 31 fire spells in a round is silly. Little Black Mage in FF9 doing it - fine. Big Fighter Guy with machine gun doing it - silly. If it wasn't for that kind of thing, I would like FFVI a lot better.
