Ken Kutaragi Calls the Xbox 360 "not a threat" (Xbox 1.5 pt.2)

President of Sony (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8778#) Computer (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8778#) Entertainment Ken Kutaragi has launched a savage attack on Microsoft’s ongoing Xbox (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8778#) project, declaring the firm’s offering is “not a threat” to the PlayStation (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8778#) brand.

“Microsoft is trailing behind us and is not a threat," Kutaragi declared. "It is good at improving, but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology. Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a karate master and Microsoft is still not a black belt."

And Kutaragi-san, a well established proponent of anti-PR, wasn’t finished. In the same piece, as published in a Japanese newspaper yesterday, he continued, “"Like with Microsoft's operating systems, it might come out with something good around the third-generation of their release."

As regular SPOnG readers will know, Ken Kutaragi is the master of anti-spin in modern videogaming, with his strategy seeing off Nintendo (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8778#) and Sega’s offerings in the past. As to whether his voice in the specialist press will be enough to drown out Microsoft’s increasingly bold claims as the next few months roll by...well, it will be interesting to see.

That article pretty much translated to "Man, I wish our Playstation had an exclusive game that hundreds of people would buy a PS3 for!".. they're trying to do that with Soul Calibur 3, but here's the newsflash: Soul Calibur 2 is still rotting the clearance bins for ALL systems, Soul Calibur 3 will be no different.

Its a fighting game, what did you expect? for it to become rare? They're mostly destined to follow in the footsteps of Madden Collectors Edition.

Fighting games are all about a short lived and sweet competitive window.

Nintendo wasn't #1 forever. Sony won't be #1 forever. MS isn't going to win the next war, but if they do good in round 2 they might be able to take it in the forth round down the road.

It's only a matter of time before Sony fucks up.

Keep in mind though that this is the company that had to completely scrap the OS they spent tens of millions of dollars developers without ever coming up with something that wasn't already provided by existing proprietary and OSS operating systems. THis OS was supposed to be in every applicable Sony product and eventually be the basis of a PC challenge to Microsoft.

The line of crap they fed the credulous writer of WIRED Magazine puff piece a few years ago. At one point they spoke of a miraculous ability to teach the OS about new hardware that didn't exist when it was compiled. This would be accomplished with softwa modules. Hey Ken, they're called device drivers! While you're at, could you reinvent ranch dressing, too?

Why bother when Microsoft has the satisfaction of selling truckloads of Windows license for use on Sony PCs and portables?

Remember when the PS2 was going to become a home computer with demos of an AOL client and Netscape browsers at E3? Remember how those plans had disappeared as though they'd never been by the next E3?
