Personally I have never seen a record get one star in Rollingstone before. Hopefully this is the death twitch we've all been waiting for. The death of a god-awful musical phenomen.....

For comparison's sake the new White Stripes got 4 1/2. :D
EDIT:
If you happen to be a rock band, and you don't happen to be either of the White Stripes, it so sucks to be you right now.

Backstreet Boys/N*Sync trend > pop-punk trend. At least the Backstreet Boys had vocal talent. I can't stand all this Good Charrolette, Ashley Simpson, New Found Glory crap.

The sad thing is the music labels slap these bands together, and all these horny teenage girls go oh my god he said he loved me in a song. I need to buy all of there albums and merchandise. it is like clockwork. the record label knows it will make them a couple hundred million or the band will bomb. so to them it's worth a shot.

This is doubly insulting to the Backstreet Boys because, not only did their "HUGE COMEBACK ALBUM" only get one star, it got one star in "Rolling Stone". I've never seen Rolling Stone give a review for anything short of saying something akin to "This [game, movie, album] is a tour de force, a triumph for humanity, and nothing short of an utter masterpiece".

Actually, I went to high school with one of the BSBs. He could sing. Don't know if he would have had a vocal career if he hadn't got into the 'boy band' thing, but he was in a few of the advanced choirs.

I would agree with the OP, this is just a slap in the face of a dead pop group, whoms attempt after "breaking up" to score some more cash to fuel their raging drug addiction have failed.

On a perfect day I know I can count on you...
One of my all-time favorite R&B songs.
Anyway, I don't see what the big deal is here, the awful reign of the boy bands ended abruptedly after Justin's departure from Nsync. He then broke up with Brittney and the dream was over  Seriously though, boy bands seem to have fallen off the radio about 3 years ago.

Please don't lump the Beatles in with the rest of those. At least they were writing their own material not just learning new choreography.

They were all in their 20s, had been playing together for some time, wrote their own songs and weren't put together by some svengali. That certainly sets them apart from boy bands like New Edition, NKOTB, Backstreet and NSYNC.
And quality of music is never irrelevant.

Well yes and no. They had Boy band tendencies because they caused an uproar in the female population. The girls in the audience at the Ed Sullivan show went crazy when the Beatles came on stage.
What sets them apart from the New Kids on the Block/Nsync/Backstreet current boy bands is the fact that they wrote their songs AND played their instruments. Also they successfully made the transition from boy band to rock stars.
So you are partially right. In the beginning they were a boy band; In the end, they were respected musicians.

I used to drive an older guy in my office nuts by pointing out the simalaraties between the Beatles and the backstreet boys. I'd have him close to hitting me before I'd stop it was funny. Don't forget they were both popular overseas before they got here.

I'm not trying to discredit The Beatles' talent. But every documentary ever made about the beatles addresses them as the Boy Band from Britain. Millions of screaming women seem to support that label.
Beatles = Boy Band. Period.

Is that your only criteria - millions of screaming women? If you look at the Ed Sullivan footage there were also some guys in the audience screaming as well, they were just drowned out by the shrillness of the young girls. The Beatles always sold well across gender lines.
Boy Band Criteria: Screaming young girls fan base, dancing choreography, not writing the vast majority of their own songs, not playing instruments, being pre-fabricated by a huckster, meteoric rise and fall, homoerotic videos.
The Beatles fail that test completely.
When you can tell me a boy band who has their equivalent to Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper's or Abbey Road, get back to me.

Beatles were a boy band in the sense that they were a "band of boys." The definition has changed since then, and now applies to any 5 person group of metro's that dont write their own songs or play any instruments.

I'd say that was true ... for about 2 years ('63-64). After that they started in with the artistic merit.

man backstreet boys is straight up wasted talent,
they come out with one real awesome song, The Call, yet none of their songs match that style
instead they focus on crappy ballads and teeny bop pop...
but... then again theyre not the ones in control of their music,
regardless if molded correctly they coulda been real good
