View Full Version : I made a wooden Revolution!

I actually finished this before the Rev's online download service was announced. Then Nintendo had to go and make it obsolete.

This was the basic idea. Move all my old consoles away from the TV so the controller cords would easily reach the couch. With a switch box inside, I only have a single set of A/V cords shooting out to the TV. Still not ideal, but much better than having to pull a system out onto the floor everytime I want to play it.

It took a few weeks of working in my spare time, but I eventually got it done.

The switch box is auto-sensing, so I just have to hit the power button on whatever I want to play. Plenty of room for extra controllers, bongos, and a zapper. Even a spot to charge my DS or SP when I'm not using them. The empty shelf there is awaiting the Revolution, of course. At the time, I was worried it might not fit, but I think I can squeeze something the size of 3 DVD cases in there.
I'm stuck in a tiny room for now, so I can't really use it as a coffee table yet, but it should be sweet after I move.

Nice idea. I wonder if it would be worth it to run the one wire to the TV under the carpet or something...

Any chance that thing has an RF Modulator? Or does it work only with A/V Cables?

Ha! I remember when people thought my 32" TV was huge. Still not sure when I'm gonna take the HDTV plunge but hopefully it's not too far off.
Materials....hmm.... I want to say it was about 140 bucks or so. But most of the wood was spare stuff the old man never used, so he just let me have it. I probably only paid about 30 bucks out of pocket.
I got the switchbox from Radioshack, same one Graystone linked. There's no RF modulator, but I'm using the Brick NES's A/V out and some spare N64 cables I had are on the SNES, so it worked out nicely. I had a hard time finding one with as many inputs as I wanted, but I couldn't be happier with it.
It's so tempting to play GameCube with the WaveBird and the doors shut, but I don't want to overheat my Cube.

this was the only thing i found problemmatic. next generation will be all wireless so maybe drill some holes in the sides to avoid over heating.
nice job otherwise!!!

Looks really good, although I would second the notion for airholes.

It crossed my mind when I was building, but I couldn't think of any way to add enough ventilation without screwing up the appearance. Leaving the doors open during play works fine, it's just not nearly as cool.

Not sure how much airflow it would provide, but you could put a row of fans on the bottom of each shelf with. Then put some brass fretwork on the doors. If done right it would not take away from the look. Then just add a power switch mounted on the inside hanging from the top so it's out of the way.

Hmm, are they are autosensing (or nonautosensing) switch boxes with a few more ports? I keep 8 video game systems hooked up by A/V, with two more, Rev and 360, on the way. I'd like to have them all work.

Not a bad idea, but I don't think it would be worth the trouble. I'd much rather just leave the door open while playing than worry about wiring up fans and such.

That one I used had the most I could find. There were some HD compatible ones that might of had more, but those were a few hundred dollars more. You could always buy two switch boxes and daisy chain them. If they were autosensing, it really wouldn't be any extra hassle on your end.

I'm a helluva lot more impressed by how nice it looks closed. I would have never guessed that thing would be used as an entertainment center, looks more likely to store classy books and whatnot
overrall an incredibly high class piece of furniture bravo
