I have made custom PS1 DVD case artwork for the following games. However I need help with a batch of new ones. First, this is what I've made. I will provide pics in the following pages. If you come up with one off my "need" list, that would be cool. I will post the pics in the reply after this.

Nice work! Very impressive.

However, wouldn't we want to use CD cases for PS1 games (since they were all originally released that way)? If I had a bunch of disc-only games, I'd prefer to use cd cases so I could display them along with my other PS1 games that are in the original cases.

I guess that some people like to have all their games in one type of box, so that they're all even sizes on a shelf.

Those look pretty nice, though a couple, like the FF9 box, are a bit sparse. Keep up the good work.

Yeh, as the poster above stated with DVD-sized PS1 cases I can put my PS1, PS2, and XBOX games all on the same shelf. So I can have all the Final Fantasy games together, all the street fighter games together, all the Rayman games together etc. I already have original CD art for all the above games, idea was to resize it so it matched the boxes of modern games. Looks nice for a collection :)

i would love to use these, tho some of the 4 disc games are gonna be too hard to get into dvd cases

The 4/5 disc covers are specifically designed for the dimensions of the Alpha Multipak 5 disc version

The multipaks hold 4 pr 5 discs depending on the configuration of the hard plastic "pages" you insert and they have a spot for the instructions :)

The FF7 cover is designed for the Alpha slim 3 multipak

edit: TEMPLATES MOVED TO FIRST POST IN THREAD

Just worry about the cover/spine/rear artwork. I can throw on the little logos like the NTSC, ESRB stuff, # of players, and whatnot. For the games I need artwork for I have no images atm, I usually hunt on the net for pics or scan text from sequels to get the right font. Or I find the japanese art, or I crop the CD art.

I will probably start work on SFA1 and SFA2 next.

So anyone working on anything? my SFA1 cover art should be up in a couple of hours.

Also, I accidently uploaded and old, lower quality PS1 single DVD case template, which is now fixed in the above link. Modified SFA3 cover to match SFA1 as well.

You need to have a photo editor capable of cropping, bilinear resizing, and cut/paste functions. Since most PSX covers are CD-sized, just stretching the cover would look terrible. So you have to find art on the internet and mess around with the case to make it look cool somehow :)

This morning I've been trying to learn how to use the GIMP and find some images. I was trying to look for art of Legend of Mana and Einhander. There's not that much. I've also been trying to find wallpapers, which I could use some of the art from those.

That Street Fighter one is pretty good. I just wish I could find some more art like that front cover.

SFA1 was pretty much a straght scan from the box with the appropriate logos added.

SFA2, the front picture was art from a fansite, which I superimposed the SFA2 logo on that I copied off the NA cover of the game.

Darkstalkers 3: Done, May need to fix the back up a little bit, and needs proper sized ESRB Items. (Cover art is beautiful on this one.)

I'm working on a Legend of Mana cover right now. Here (http://img66.echo.cx/img66/1729/lomcaseexample0im.jpg) is the cover so far. I really only have the front cover done. I just added the back part to see how it would look. I need to work on that.

I've been using the GIMP. I've had to figure out how to do somethings for the first time. The legend of mana logo was on a white background. I put it on a separate layer from the front background and erased the white background. That was quite tedious to separate that logo from the white background. Does anyone know an easier way to do that? The only way I could enlarge the image was to use a tool that stretched the image.

I think I did pretty good for my first attempt. I just need to work on the back now.

I've modeled mine after the PSone long boxes...if you wanted the true feel...you should host my .psd and you can make them look like an actual PSone game except a PS2 knock off.

Sweet Xenogears cover. How about some love for Parasite Eve 1 and 2?

If you printed some of these off, I would most definately buy them from you. The spine on the earlier ones (Final Fantasy) seem big, though.

Yeah. If they were printed on high glossy paper, i'd definately buy some of these from you. My brother would love something like this.

I thought the same about the big spines also, but Ruined mentioned that those are for the Alpha Multipak(sp?) DVD cases. From this link (http://www.inetdvd.com/store/tmp_product_new2003.asp?id=16208) its a multiple DVD/CD case.

I put up links to stores you can buy the actual cases in the first post in the thread:
http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1039269&postcount=1

The FF cases have big spines because the cases hold 3-5 discs plus the manual depending on the FF game, while a regular sized DVD case can only hold 1-2 discs plus the manual.

As for purchasing, I cannot sell the cases because the would be copyright infringement. Also, I do not use high gloss paper because the gloss sticks to the plastic of the DVD case and looks terrible. I recommend using Epson Matte Paper Heavyweight, when in the case it looks the same as original artwork. For cutting the paper I recommend the Dahle 507 rolling trimmer, much better than the choppers or low quality trimmers. For a printer I would go with one of the Epson Photo inkjets.

im all for it, i freakin hate dvds cases

to make things easier though, we should leave out the "behind the disc" art, because it would be hard to line it up properly, and it would be more expensive to print

this could be fun though, the whole "downsizing" aspect of the artwork could allow for an esier use of custom covers.

You don't like DVD cases? But CD cases always end up cracking and what not. They should make DVD cases around the size of NDS boxes, that would save up some room.

Argh... I keep trying to make a cover for Digimon World but GIMP 2.2 keeps freezing...
and my computer is built for heavy cpu usage like this!

One question - are you re-typing the text from the boxes or are you reusing the text from the boxes? I found reusing the text would cause a blurry mess, while re-typing it stands out more.

I don't know about needing to use them for the playstation cases, but some Saturn DVD cases would be cool as well. I was bored and did a slackjob one for Croc on Saturn. What do you think:

So I'm new here, had some friends from PA I knew that posted here and I got started making these covers. Not that great at it right now but yeah. The few I've made are a little rough around the edges at parts.

I took down the hi-res version of my green VR Missions case. There were a lot of mistakes that I couldn't really see until I printed it out. I'm going to fix it then repost.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c279/ShimSham2/VRgrnsm2.jpg

(high resolution version has the spine text positioned slightly differently from preview above)
I also noticed this one looks awful printed in black and white. I'm going to print it in color tomorrow. If it doesn't look right after that, then I might just scrap it.

I hope Ruined doesn't mind but I took his FFVII cover, which I loved but changed the front and added the 3-discs to the spine.

At my Kinkos it costs $0.20 per minute to use their computer and then $1 per color printout. Sizing is the key part, make sure you know beforehand what program printing under what options will give you the right size, otherwise you'll go there and waste money. Information on the right paper is on the first page.

For those of us waiting for Resident Evil DVD covers.. this may be a stroke of genius (at least for those of us who need RE2 and RE3:N).

Take the GameCube DVD covers for those two games and just copy the stuff onto a PS2 template. You'd have to replace a few things, like the Nintendo seal of quality, but I bet it could be done rather easily. I suck at image editing, otherwise I'd give it a shot myself. I might even make a lameass attempt later.

oh snap I just realized all of your case have a Black background on the PS logo on the spine when it should be a white...

yeah, i actually did that on purpose. it helps to make a distinction between the psx and ps2 games.

i.e. -

ps2 games have the white background
psx games have the black background

now what really throws it off is that ps2 greatest hits games also have the black background. *sigh* (of course, the red spine stands out though on these;)).

you may also notice that i didn't include the slus # on the spine (cause i didn't want to be that anal ;)) and the front cover "header" block is a bit thicker (vertically) than ps2 games. this helps reduce the amount the front image needs to be stretched, and also a small visual distinction between psx & ps2.

p.s. - also, some of the earlier ones i did have the back cover cropped too close on the left and right sides, thus truncating some text. this is because i had trimmed them down before i decided to start scanning them & making covers. just an fyi in case you want to use these.

whats a slim dvd case.. are they the normal dvd cases?

gamerdude5
03-27-2006, 05:07 PM
are they the normal dvd cases? no

whats a slim dvd case.. slim dvd cases are literally half the size of a regular dvd case. do you know how they started making "slim" cd jewel cases? same deal but w/ dvd cases.

you can't really tell the size difference from this link, but here are the ones that I personally buy. (memorex slim dvd cases - clear)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001MKU48/002-1491316-8794412?v=glance&n=172282

you can also buy these in-store at:
k-mart (cost ~$13.00/25pack)
staples (cost ~$20.00/25pack)

note: you can buy these in black or clear. i personally like the clear because it hides fingerprints on the plastic better, and allows the possibility to print an image on the inside as well as the outside.

p.s. - to get the clear, slim "double" cases (holds 2 discs)... i have only seen these at staples (staples branded) (cost ~$16.00/20pack).
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?prodCatType=1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=102420&cmArea=SEARCH
i have not seen these anywhere else in the "clear" variety.

http://home.comcast.net/%7Ecowanpestcontrol/vagrantsmall2.gif

So I made this.

Here is the high res version. (http://home.comcast.net/%7Ecowanpestcontrol/Vagrantbig2.gif)

The only thing I don't really like is the contrast I have between the front/spine and the back.

Not to mention, Vagrant Story wasn't made by SquareEnix, like it was in GamerDude's cover. It's Squaresoft, this is pre-2002 or so.

i like it except does the glow of the spine need to strech onto the back of the cover too? Yeah that wasn't intentional.

I'm not exactly the most experienced with Photoshop, and in photoshop, the glow on both the front and spine wasn't as big as it ended up being when turned into a jpg.

I just haven't felt like trying to figure out why and fixing it.

GameScanner has tons of scans of Playstation games. Many we cannot use, but there are some good ones in there!

This is an awesome undertaking! I just found this thread thru Google on accident and now I can't stop thinking about changing my PS1 games over to PS2 cases, heh. ^_^

Question though: I don't have access (that I know of) to a fancy printer - anyone on here print these covers for others (obviously for a fee)...? I might be interested.

If anyone is interested in having the video game inserts that are available for download printed out but don't have the resources to do it I'm offering a print service at a cost of $0.35 per insert plus a small S&H fee. I can print them out on a thin, glossy cardstock that will hold up better than paper. The printer I use is a high end commercial grade color laser that's as big as a washing machine, no kidding, and it does an incredible job. The only thing I ask is that you order a minimum of two inserts because the sheets I use are 12" x 18" and this will help prevent wasting the cardstock. If you check my feedback you'll see that I already have two very satisfied customers.

There ya go

Yep. All you need to do is PM Speed Racer. He does real quality prints on professional cardstock for 35cents each (about half as cheap as anything you'll get at a Kinkos). Great stuff.

First off what the nun?

Second off those jobs are really good.

Third off I could really see where you are going with this and would help out but I don't have the time at the moment. Personally I like the regular cases when compared to the DVD cases.

I mean they break apart too easy, I could see the Disc print on the other side of my cases. If I threw a dart at any DVD case Vs. any CD case the Cd case will allways win.

Once again great idea and if I have the time I will try to put in the effort.

I've been trying to find scans of HDadvance 3.0 (the blue one) ever since I got the CD and DVD set. Mine never came in a package so I can't scan them in myself so I was wondering if anyone could provide me with high resolution scans or the complete print-ready PS2 Coverart. Thank you if you can and thanks anyways if you can't. :)

I currently making a "Vs. Series Anthology" case of sorts in my spare time. It's gonna have X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, and Marvel vs Capcom. Or if I do 5 disc, I add X-men Children of the Atom in there as well.

Good or no? I hated the orginal front and back so much that I decided to go 100% custom. Kind of a PS2/GCN hybrid.

Edit: Uploaded a more updated version
Edit 2: Changed the upper back. It's actually readable now! =) Also updated the hi-rez I posted later down there...

Or you can go right here:

The style was inspired from me trying to convert the GCN RE3 cover to a PS1, which is finished and right here:

I'm going to try to do all my games in this style now. No requests of games I don't have plleaase. Mainly because these took me a couple hours at a time.

So I finally have a (crappy) scanner and access to my limited PS1 games. I can scan what I have if anyone's interested, and if someone is willing to adjust the images (they seem a bit washed out when I scan them) and put them together into a nice cover. So, would anyone be willing to help with:

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Spider-Man
Spider-Man 2 Enter: Electro
X-Men: Children of the Atom
Marvel Super Heroes
Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal
Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue
Power Rangers: Time Force

I also have the "Weskers Report" disc from Resident Evil Code Veronica X, if anyone's interested in doing something with that. So...anyone? :)

hey, we all gotta start somewhere. My first attempts aren't much better. Out of the ones you've posted though, I'll definitely be making a new Evil Zone cover in my style.
