Story takes place 1,000 years before Lunar Silver Star, following a new hero; gameplay will take advantage of the portable's dual screens.
A new installment of Sega CD's hit Lunar role-playing game series is coming to the Nintendo DS. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Marvelous Interactive will release Lunar Genesis on the double-screened handheld on August 25 in Japan. The game is being distributed in North America by Ubisoft sometime between July and September.
Lunar Genesis will play as a new 2D RPG rather than a port of the previous two installments released on the Sega CD in 1992 and 1994. The game takes place 1,000 years before Lunar Silver Star, with a new adventure following Gien Campbell, a 15-year-old delivery boy that works in a port town. Party members in the game include Lucia Collins, a 14-year-old, magic-using girl that's who is like a sister to Gien, and Gabiriel Ryan, a half-beast girl that's good at claw-fighting and has the ability to absorb and use enemy attacks.
Gien's story starts off when he one day receives a request to make a delivery to the town of Heelritz, a place also known as the town of half-beasts. Excited about his visit to the legendary city, Gien makes his way there despite of a lot of hardships. However, what he sees when he gets to Heelritz is far from the utopia that he had imagined.
Lunar Genesis takes advantage of the DS's hardware, letting players move around the map by just touching to the point where you want to go. The battle uses both the top and the bottom screens to show the enemies on the ground and in the air. One interesting feature is that players can order their characters to run away from battles with the DS's microphone. Whether the player can also order other battle commands via voice is currently unknown.
Development of Lunar Genesis is currently 90 percent complete.
Well they say its 2D thats should ease some peoples worries, no screens though....

They're not even the ones making it, it's Marvelous Interactive which is not Game Arts so expect this game to suck.

Thats strange. A few days ago Ubisoft had a page officially naming it Lunar: Dragon Song, but they took it down. Remnents of the change remain on some media outlets, but for some reason Gamespot and IGN didnt report it.

Marvelous happens to be the developer of the successful Harvest Moon games.

I'm just hoping that they will make the release date some time in July. That way I will be able to get some RPG-goodness on my DS before I have to go back to school (thank God I only have one more year of college, until grad school :( ).

Possibly bad news, from www.the-magicbox.com
"Marvelous Interactive released some details on the DS RPG Lunar Genesis, the story takes place 1000 years before Lunar: The Silver Star; the character designer is Toshiyuki Kubooka. The game will have a card battle system; two players can battle over wirelessly."

If so, I will definitely not be picking it up.
Also, are you guys tired of playing as bratty-ass kids in RPGs? What is the obsession with all this coming-of-age RPGs out nowadays? Why can't they just let us play as an adult?

According to IGN, Game Arts is the developer. Marvelous is just the publisher for the Japanese release. Ubisoft will distribute it in the US.
From IGN:
GameArts is handling development on the title, with Marvelous Interactive serving as publisher in Japan.
As for information about the battle system, IGN doesn't have any details and neither does GameSpot. Both GS and IGN mention that the microphone can be used for issuing commands. Wouldn't it be strange that you could issue commands if it was a card-based battle system?

It seems like the two player card battling could be like a bonus feature. Maybe you collect cards like FF8 and 9?

Lunar's always had young protagonists. But I do agree that an older main character cough Setzer cough would be nice in another RPG series.
And now for everyone else: having a battle system based around cards is TOTALLY AMBIGUOUS and could mean ANYTHING. You'll probably be collecting weapon cards instead of weapons. OMG!
What the hell, why not wait until more details are revealed before being all OMFG? Do you really think Game Arts is going to fuck up a new game to their most popular series??
Indeed, you all must have FAITH George Michael. He wants your sex.

The GameBoy advance Lunar was insanely butchered....I hope the translation is as good as the Playstation Lunars.

I REALLY hope that the microphone isn't necessary to play, I feel/look/am like a total frigging idiot playing the mic games in Feel the Magic..
