This looks like an awesome fighter for the DS, combining many characters from various mangas in Jump magazine.

What is the chance of this coming to the US and what is the release date in Japan? And how much do you think it will cost to import? I'm very interested in this game (big fighting fan) and may possibly import.

I think the japanese release date is August 8th, the same day the red DS comes out in Japan.
It has a slim-to-minimal chance of coming out in the US, since it would require many different companies and licenses, unlike in Japan, where only one company has the manga licencing (sp?).
I think www.lik-sang.com (http://www.lik-sang.com) has it for preorder for $48-50, dunno about the shipping. I didn't check any other import sites.

Yeah I will probably import this then, hopefully it's not too text heavy. Fighting is one of my top genres and I'm dying for some DS fighters.

If Nintendo doesn't announce plans to bring it over between now and then, i'll import. As for license difficulty in America, I don't think it would be so hard. Jump magazine exists here as well and features all these mangas. I could be overlooking something though.

Different companies own the rights to different licenses for the video games in the US.
I know Atari has the rights to Dragonball Z, I think, and the rest would have to be licensed out which would be more of a hassle.
Konami has the rights to Shaman King, also, as well as Yu-Gi-Oh. I assume they'd have to get the ok from companies in the US to use the characters.

Yep. That'll do it. Oh well, i'm positive that this will end up being the #1 imported game on the DS then. Unless Nintendo or another company feel like going through all the trouble.

I know of lik-sang and play-asia but I was wonderning if there are any US sites will be selling the game on it's August 8 release date.

I would think that this game would be like Smash, in that you really need people to get the full experience. So as much as I would like to play it, I may have to pass.
As I understand it:
Shonen Jump in America is fully owned and operated by Viz, and only shows Viz owned licenses. You won't seen anything by Tokyopop or Black Horse in "Shonen Jump" magazine in America.
In Japan, Shonen Jump will either broker a deal with a manga creation conglomerate like Bandai or get things straight from the small little manga-ka group, like Monkey Punch. Part of the agreement THERE is that they retain certain rights. This is why Jump Baseball was created for the NES in 1990.
I'd say the chances of a U.S. release are virtually non-existent. They would require some crazy deals being made. Not to mention that MOST of the characters are going to be unfamiliar to most everyone. Sure, you could emphasize Goku or anyone thats ever been on the Cartoon network on the cover, and it'll probably do alright though.

This game has been sounding amazing. I've been following it for a while. Even DL'd the trailers/teasers from Gamesarefun.com, but I can't seem to get them to work for some reason. No player so far will work with them, from DivX, Winamp, Quicktime, it just can't seem to work.
Oh and yes, I plan to import this game since it probably will never get a release in America. The thing just sounds so bad ass and awesome so far, not to mention it's a dream come true with all of those characters in it.

Pre-ordered today from yesasia.com, 'cause the cheap price is more important to me than getting it next week. There's no way this comes out in the US, for the same reason we haven't seen a Super Robot Wars game (which would be easier to obtain licenses for AND features more familiar characters).

I've had the game pre-ordered for a while at Play-Asia, and it recently shipped, but I chose one of their really cheap shipping options so it'll be a while before the game actually gets into my hands and ultimately into my Nintendo DS.
As for the "pre-order bonus," I ordered that book that they [Play-Asia] have just in case I don't get it with my game. If I actually do, I can just return the extra book I ordered.

They aren't comic strips. It's actually more like a card battling system to supplement the traditional SSB-style fighting. The cards, of varying shapes and sizes, representing battle, support, and help characters are arranged on a 4x5 grid (which limits the number of cards--bigger, more powerful cards take up more room).
Since there is already a FAQ up on gamefaqs describing what each card does (in very basic terms) I'm guessing I won't have any trouble using them.

Jump Super Stars Starts with a Bang

Nintendo has recently released their Super Smash Brothers "clone", Jump Super Stars, which consists of many characters from different animes all fighting each other. On the first day the game was released, it has managed to sell over 320,000 copies! Japan must really love anime, because this game is flying off the shelves.
Stay tuned to Nintendo Now for more updated sales figures.

How well is that compared to other top selling Japanese games of the past?

NanoNils - 08-11-05
Hang on, I found a list that'll help make the comparison easier:
Top sales this year, I believe
01 PS2 Gran Turismo 4, SCE, 1,051,961

03 PS2 Dragonball Z3, Bandai, 639,950
04 NDS Nintendogs, Nintendo, 494,330
05 PS2 Winning Eleven 8 Liveware Evolution, Konami, 458,626
06 PS2 Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song, Square Enix, 443,005
07 NDS Sawaru Made in Wario, Nintendo, 398,380
08 PS2 Mobile Suit Gundam: One Year War, Bandai, 384,762
09 NDS Super Mario 64 DS, Nintendo, 355,013

11 PS2 Radiata Stories, Square Enix 293,413
12 PS2 Devil May Cry 3, Capcom 278,649
13 PS2 Dragon Quest VIII, Square Enix 276,604
14 PS2 Another Century's Episode, Banpresto 254,527
15 PSP Minna no Golf Portable, SCEJ 231,933
16 PS2 Monster Hunter G, Capcom 229,966
17 GBA Mushiking, Sega 222,199
18 NGC Resident Evil 4, Capcom 220,704
19 GBA Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon 218,574
20 NDS Touch! Kirby, Nintendo 208,40
This means it's already the tenth best selling game at this point.

Actually, the odds of it coming here are still pretty slim, since all the anime licenses are spread out among a bunch of different companies. It would be a licensing nightmare trying to get rights for all the different animes from all the US publishers.

The american rights to those anime charecters in video games really that spread out. With sales that well and a lot of those charecters being pretty popular over here combined with it fast becoming the best selling ds game on the system I think the chance is pretty good. Yeah, same question for me. I'm importing Ouendan and something else. Either Band Brothers or this. I was considering Electroplantkon, too. Hmm.
For those who never import a game there are only 2 things to look out for. First is the mission objective, which you can just use gamefaqs to easily figure out
The second is the Koma, which requires you to match a character with his or her quotes. I use this http://parasyte.info/jsschars.html Just match the character's name with the quote. It took me a bit to figure out but I played games with more text.

Yeah, same question for me. I'm importing Ouendan and something else. Either Band Brothers or this. I was considering Electroplantkon, too. Hmm.
Go with Jump Superstars. Band Brothers might come to the US (supposedly it's coming to Europe) and if not, you'll want to wait for it's expansion to come out so you can get the bundle, assuming it will be bundled. Electroplankton is coming to the US in November, there is really no reason to import.
Rocko
08-13-2005, 10:29 AM
You've sold me on that, PArathod. I know Electroplankton is coming to US, so that would be a wasted 20 dollars. Ouendan looks awesome, but Band Brothers is just another music game. I'm sure they're both great, but I'd rather get them...not together, or I'm afraid they will get dull sooner.
My only concern is the language barrier. Are the FAQS and GameFaqs and such good enough? I've never imported a game and can't speak a word of Japanese at all.

The only important thing to know in Ouendan is that on the main menu the difficulty goes:
Very Hard
Hard
Medium
Easy
Other than that, you'll only miss out on some story (if you can't figure it out by looking at the self explanitory pictures).
Mine should be here soon, along with Jump Superstars, so i'll do a double check for you.

Thanks Parathod. I appreciate your help, and that'll save me some anger when I try Hard expecting Easy. =P
But actually, the language barrier issues I was referring to was for Jump. I've heard that the cards, or Koma, you can get and such are a little frustrating being in Japanese and that it could turn the game on you in a second. When you ge tit, sometime, could you possibly clue me in on how it works, and if non-Japanese speakers like myself will still enjoy the game?
Thanks a lot.

Read this on another board of another site. The licenseing issue has the same problem is Japan if you check. And viz releasing this game is a real possibility. Especially if it goes on to sell even better. Over a million copies, which is more then possible given the numbers then i'd say it might not come over soon but it will eventually. Maybe not even in it's current form but eventually.
near as I can tell, the situation is this:
Viz, the company that releases Shonen Jump in the US, is likely the only possible licensor for any as of yet unlicensed Jump titles. This is because Shueisha, the publisher that releases Shonen Jump (among other titles) in Japan, is also one of the two primary owners of Viz (I believe the other is Shogakukan). Therefore, as far as release of this title in the US, the licensing issue seems very simple: this game is based off of the Shonen Jump manga line, and therefore Viz (and ultimately Shueisha) are the only people who need to be dealt with in addition to the actual developers. Granted, the US rights would probably be expensive (and a number of the series involved have not yet been released over here), but there is only one company that needs to be dealt with to secure the US release.
Now, if the game is handled through the anime side, then the chances of a US release are probably minimal, as different companies have the rights for most of the anime based off of this manga.
Incidentally, there is a good reason why neither Inuyasha or Fullmetal Alchemist was used in this game: they aren't Shonen Jump titles in Japan. Inuyasha, in fact, is not even a Shueisha title at all; it runs in one of Shogakukan's magazines.
Just beat this game today, still got tons of stuff to unlock.
IGN sums up the reason why this wont be in US:
"Given the licensing complexities, it'd be virtually impossible to release this title outside Japan. For example, the US license of Dragon Ball is exclusively held by Atari, while One Piece is handled by Bandai."
According to ign, that means a game base on manga or anime of DBZ has to go through Atari, and same with the other series.
The Super Robot War /ACE series also sold very well in Japan and their line up is just as impressive as JSS, but it has basiclly zero chance of getting a US release. This shows that the popularitry of the series and sales in Japan won't be helping that much.
So does this have a chance of getting a US release? Well if Atari, Bandi, Capcom, Konami, and other companies that own lienses in the US somehow merged together.

But it would be extremely expensive to take care of all the licensing issues, and not many Americans are familiar with all these characters.
A mother is going to buy Pokemon, Mario, and Sonic over some Jump game.

The high number of imports might actually have a negative effect, too. After all, a lot of the people who would really be interested in this game probably already have it. After all, it's the number 1 DS gamefaqs board and FAQ right now, which tells you that a lot of folks in the US imported this game.

Thought you guys were fans of the game. I mean honestly I was just speculating for the future. By 2007 the odds of the licensing issues getting handled and it getting released hear are pretty good. And that game didn't sell anywhere near as good as Jump superstars. It made the top ten sales list for the year in ONE DAY. Thats spectacular. And Viz owns the Manga rights to dbz. Along with all the others for the USA. Atari owns the game rights to the DBZ anime. Japan has the licensing for the anime split up just like hear. They went with the manga licensing route there too. Whats to say they eventually won't do the same hear. I'm not saying its immeninent just possible.

In a way it is possible, sort of like how EA is making a Marvel Super hero game and activion got the right to spider-man. so yeah a release is possible but still highly unlikely.

I know that no one cares, but Ouendan really is the best game on the DS. I'd recommend getting the game with Jump Superstars.

That makes me feel good. I ordered Ouendan along with Superstars from Yes Asia, and started thinking that maybe Ouendan wasn't as good as I previously thought. But after watching the IGN video again, I was so wrong. =D
A question for you and others- For those of you who don't read Japanese, how hard is it to get into the game seeing as how it's not in English? (I'm talking about Superstars, not Ouendan)

I have a question-
In the Koma things that have 2 or 3 spots to insert pictures to make them whole and such, do all the correct ones need to be in place at the same time, or, if Iget 1 correct out of the 2/3, will it lock in?

Finally going to pull the trigger on Jump Superstars... no way I'm ordering from Play Asia though, and waiting two weeks for them to ship it.
Can get it on Ebay for $52 shipped (brand new to boot) with First Class shipping, I think I'll go for it tonight.

My boyfriend hasn't stopped playing this game. He got it three weeks ago about the same time Nintendogs came out so we had to buy another DS. I tried multiplayer with him. It's really fun and there are FAQs that can help you get through the text for mission requirements.
