View Full Version : What happend to the community around here?

I may be a "cheap ass newbie" per my total post count, but I've been a lurker around these parts for quite some time. I've come to really count on and appreciate the deals that have been offered here, as well as the community that supports one another. Obviously, we all have many similar tastes when it comes to entertainment, but there are also many differences that we also share. Whether they be views on who should be in the White House, or whether or not sports games "suck". However, they are all our own views, and part of being in a community is sharing your views while listening to and respecting others' views. That's what a community is about.
I am a college educated adult who also works in the games industry, so I may be in the minority, but I tire of all the flame wars, the name calling, the homophobic remarks, the racist remarks, the sarcastic come-backs just to get your two cents in. It looks poorly on you as individuals, but more importantly it makes sites like this, and the game community as a whole, look bad. I understand how tempting it is to post a come-back every time someone says something asinine, but is it worth it? What's the point?
Although I am in no way affiliated with this site or its moderators/founders, I feel that it is safe to say that being a part of the CAG community is not a right, but rather a privilege. Let's get back to the point where we can have good discussions without fear of the lame (and predictable) flame.
Again, I'm not saying to leave the sarcasm or humor at your homepage. But rather, let's use it to a better purpose. There are thousands of other message boards that are just flaming minefields. Let's make this place different, and see what happens.
Sorry for the rant, just tired of reading post after post of "you suck", "no you suck", "well, so does your mom", etc....
So go ahead, and flame away if you want. But I dare you to really consider what I'm babbling about.
/end rant now

1. Deals are scarce. Fraud and Scam posts are common. Some people have great distaste for that.
That's one major point of contention
2. It's an election year. In any open forum dominated primarily by Americans, politics and the election are bound to come up.
There's another point of contention.
3. Vetrans are in the minority right now.. CAG was hit by gluts of new users when Gamespot, HardOCP and other high, high traffic sites provided links to CAG. Right now, the noobs vastly outnumber the vetrans, and thier topic glut the board at times... and often vets will flame these as inappropriate.
Of course, the vast majority of these posts can be avoided if you don't read posts from the off topic section.

I think this is what he was referring to in the first post...
Things change, not always for the better. I'd love it if things remained the way they were before forever, but as long as the site continues to grow, that's not going to happen.
I get irritated easily; I snap and then I flame whoever's made me mad. I shouldn't, but that doesn't stop me.
We just have to deal with the changes that come with time. Some will come, others will leave (st0neface)...it's just part of life.

No, it's technically fill for the off topic forum...maybe site feedback, if you expect mods and/or admins to fix the problem, but it's not a non-gaming deal or request.

Watching a thread about community on the site devolve into an argument over thread location is a perfect example of irony...
Just an observation.

To be irony, it would have to be something you don't expect to happen. Arguing on an internet message board is a law of nature.

It's not so much the arguing as it is where the arguing is occuring.
Besides...it's a much better fit than the "Ironic" tag on Fark usually is. I've seen "Meteorite hits Iran" labeled as "Ironic" before.
But I digress.

I tend to think the flame threads turn out to be the best in the sense that they are the funniest! Ever read the clouspekk Thread? Or Were has nintendofangirl gone? These were some of the funniest things I have read for a long time! There are of course the serious threads for the deals and such but A good falming never hurts either right? If you don't wanna read the flame posts then don't i mean does it really effect you in a different way? I mean come on if I wanted to read the wallstreet journal then I would. Everybody needs some humor and a laugh now and then. If not your going to look like that dude with his eyes bulging out. Loosen the tie a little man and take a deep breath. It'll all be ok!
The community is still here...ITs just a litle more sarcastic...and wittier...and willing to tell you off when you say something stupid...and just a whole lot more of teenage males all wanting to put their two cents in...(like me of course) Thus more funnier! Man I love this place!

MrHockey66, you a Lemieux fan? I went to school in Pittsburgh, so the Pens are my team.
Anyway, I totally understand your point, and I agree with it for the most part. I'm all for having good humor. Although I'm in my late 20's, my girlfriend says I act like a 13-yr-old. I NEVER tire of putting a fake cockroach under her pillow before she goes to sleep. Priceless!
It's the mean-spirited postings that don't have a place here I feel. It is often thought that the Internet, message boards, and video game message boards in particular, are wholly populated with pimply 14 year old boys who's only social experiences are dragging others down online to make themselves feel better. I KNOW that is not the case around here. Just read a few of the more recent posting. There are articulate, intelligent and genuinely funny people on here. I just wish we could have more of that, and less of the “your momma” stuff in the middle of it. Idealist, I know….

Many of the flame wars are entertaining. Some of the political discussion CAN be enlightening, though not all the time.
What exactly do you expect to be posted in the off topic forum? I could understand if there were posts like 'Nintendo sux!' followed by 'No way, M$ sux, Nintendo is king!' ad nauseum.
The people who post here (and lurk here) share a common interest: video games. It's only natural to take that common thread and pull it to see what happens. And since it's a public forum, you're bound to see immature posts. You absolutely cannot stop that no matter what. I think CAG does a good job at self regulation.
As was mentioned before, you can always simply avoid topics that you feel would take away from CAG or devolve into a senseless insult match.
Nutshell: I understand the situation. I don't see the problem.

I renege....a bit. I had a decent case of the Mondays today, and althought I didn't want to harp on the general negativity that rears its head around here sometimes, I let my ranting muscle do the typing.
This place is great, one of the few sites/message boards/communities I regularly follow. I just hate to think of it as falling into the same gene pool as the other similar sites. We are better, plain and simple.

It is called desensitization.
At first the stupid remarks were few and far between, but as they continued people got used to it and even started posting stupid remarks of their own. Now people are praised for "whitty" remarks which only leads to further degredation and worse behavior.
I'm not talking about people having arguments either. It is to the point that almost every topic gets a flurry of stupid remarks. You can't even post a deal without people injecting their stupidity.
This is the only deal site that I know of with behavior akin to gamefaqs.

Who the hell are you to pass your judgement?
Bottom line is there are a lot of immature CAG's. On occasion I'll delve into this category.
Sad but true.
The vulgarity, hostile posts, name calling etc. by these posters is fueled by response to our remarks.
We will never go away!
To promote your own civil communications you must learn to ignore the garbage posted by us.
It's your CHOICE to be here. If you don't like it be gone and never return. (you know you'll be back cause the good outweighs the bad)
There are many things I don't agree with , many things I have opinions on that I won't post on because I know the kind of response I'll get. After a while you get a feel for the CAG's your dealing with. You learn when to jump on and when to jump off.
Sometimes I'm serious ...... Sometimes not and that's my choice
It's really all about choice the #1 freedom we all have.
So think a little bit about your roll in things before you go posting your little piss ant complaints. I think the majority of people here have enough common sense to have figured this out for themselves.
You come off like your some kind of saint..... it's really pathetic.
