View Full Version : Just got a Nintendo 64
Just got an N64 with all hookups + controllers for 10 bucks at a garage sale. What are some good games and how much do they cost? I already know I want Super Mario 64, and am interested in Paper Mario (costs ???). Thanks for any opinions.

I can get you several games for cheap. When I go home next week shoot me a PM for what you are looking for. I have a local shop with several cheap games( Pokemon puzzle league for 5, Smash bros for 6, and so on)

I like Star Fox 64, Smash Bros, Majora's Mask, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and of course, Goldeneye. If you like Mario 64, give Donkey Kong 64 a shot. Someone else I'm sure can give you prices, as I'm too lazy.

paper mario is the best game on the system, i also recommend conker, zelda, goldeneye, kirby, pilotwings, starfox, and blast corps.

MArio party games are fun! I belive it went to 3 on 64. The star wars game is pretty fun too.
Wow thanks for all these suggestions. I saw a RAM Cart thing for sale on the internet. To my basic understanding you need it for some games and it improves others. Which games require it and what games suck without it?

I think DK64 and Episode 1 Racer uses the expansion pak as well.
So besides those games is there any point in getting one?

You can run PD but it looks real shoddy

If you can get it cheap, then its probably worth it just to have it. It improves the graphical quality of some games that aren't mentioned above but its only minor.

Blast Corps.

Hell yeah Blast Corps is one of my favorit games for the N64. Some other good games are Mario Golf, Mario Cart , Turok 1 and 2, Robotron64 ,Paper Mario, 1080 and F Zero X .
Awesome. How long did it take you guys to finish Paper Mario?

wut does the memory expansion thing look like...i have something in the mem expansion bay stuck inside my 64...it's black...i got the 64 used about 3 years ago but never played it much...i remember seeing the expansion pack that was red at the top in stores, but mine is black...is this black thing a "holder" like the ps2 thing is for the network adapter slot?
thanks for any help...and if this black thing ISN'T the mem expansion slot, how much would it cost?
thanks ;)
That's actually a good question, mine is the same way.

The black one is the standard jumper pak that comes with all n64's. You need it for the n64 to work so don't take it out unless you have the expansion pak to replace it. The expansion pak themselves go for about $25 3rd party ones about $15.

So, you own a game for a console you will most likely never own? Umm, why?

Are the 3rd party ones pieces of junk or does it really not matter?

I would stick with 1st party but here is a review of a mad catz expansion pak
http://www.epinions.com/game-review-DB4-1C6358EF-39739D10-prod5
ebgames.com has a 3rd party one for 17.99 but it doesn't specify what the brand is.

hope it helps.

Heh, but back in the day, removing the jumper pak was a great way to keep unwanted people from playing your system while you weren't around.

...i also recommend...blast corps.
Blast Corps.
I gotta tell you that this is one of my favorite games of all time. It's a definate sleeper hit/buried treasure. The object of the game is to clear a path for a runaway truck that carries a nuclear missle. You do this by destroying buildings using a dump truck, bulldozer, giant mechs, etc. Great fun!

Amazon also has the Nintendo brand one through its zShops, starting at $17.99 for one without the installation tool (though you can probably just use a car key or something similar to pry the old one out of the N64). There are also some brand new third party ones. It's worth checking out: link (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/videogames/B00000INR2/002-7867691-5044802)

So does a spoon. That's what I used to get my expansion pak out and it leaves no marks. Your best bet to get an expansion pak cheap is to get it in a lot with some games on ebay. And for accessories check your local TRU. That's the only place around here that still has anything besides a Circuit City and all they have are a few controllers for original price.

Most TRUs have a few games left, most of the ones around here (upstate NY) have Paper Mario for $10.

Gamecrazy sells first party expansion paks for $19.99.
I just got an N64 myself at the beginning of the month. My younger brother's owned one for years, but I've always wanted one of my own.
Mario Kart 64 is my favorite racing game. A must own. Some of my other favorites are Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, Kirby 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Pokemon Snap (forget that it's a little too easy and you've got a pretty unique game), Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Paper Mario, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Goldeneye.
@ex0: Enjoy your newly-acquired N64.

Highly overlooked N64 game: Duke Nukem Zero Hour. NOT the port of Duke Nukem 3D. I won this game in a contest way back when and it absolutely rocked. It's a little difficult in places, but worth playing. One of my favorites on the 64.
if you like sports games i suggest:
madden 2003
wwe no mercy ( best wrestler ever )
Nba on Nbc
mario kart ( my fav raceing game)
WOW!! I was getting worried there for a moment that ppl weren't giving Mario Kart it's due. You can't have an N64 with having Mario Kart. Well.. technically you can of course, but it would suck. *LOL*

Laugh if you must, but IMO, another must own for N64 is Forsaken. It you were anywhere near a fan of descent, this is a game to have, 360 degree action. The single player campaigns are pretty weak, but multiplayer is great, definately worth the couple bucks.

another sleeper is body harvest, that game was just fun
How about Harvest Moon? I see that it's a little pricey, but if I like FoMT and AWL do you think I'd like 64?
On a side note this thread has gotten more posts then i ever thought, and I want to thank everyone for all their feedback.

not long enough. but even if it never ended it would still be too short. it is gaming perfection.
harvest moon was mty first n64 game. possiblethe besst harvest moon, but like all of them, it can get repetative.

Wave Race 64
F-Zero X
Blast Corps
Excitebike 64
San Francisco Rush
I highly recommend those.
Considering I have the GameCube F-Zero would getting the N64 one be pointless?

Banjo And Kazooie
BAnjo Tooie Are also Excelent games, especially Banjo Kazooie. It's probably one of the best 3d platformers out there. Paper Mario is ABSOLUTELYworth your time as well, Harvest Moon 64 is a great way to relax, Blast Corps is a sleeper hit if I've ever seen one, Pilot Wings is a great choice, All of the Nintendo First party titles are good choices in addition. The n64 also had the best version of Shadow man, an entirely underrated game. I'll have to dog out my collection and get back to you

N64 is awesome. first system of that generation i played. SM 64 was awesome, of course, and the first games i got for it were Pod Racer, because it was the N 64/Star Wars package, and Ocarina of Time. i already had a PS1.

yeah Excitebike 64 uses the expansion pack, fantastic game.
Also Ridge Racer 64 was great, you could do a 360 power slide in the turns and end up going faster out the turn because of it.

Here are some other good buys.
Body Harvest: Dirt cheap and highly overlooked. It's from the creators of Grand Theft AUto III and runs off roughly the same engine. It can display tons of huge enemies on screen and there is one point in the game where the game may actually crash because of it!!
Turok 1-3: Opinions vary on this series but I loved them. The first two can be bought for a little over $10.
Conker's Bad Fur Day: You can still find new copies of this gem fairly easy.
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness: One of the best Castlevania games, ever it's what Castlevania should have been. Worth playing for the Villa level alone.
Fighters Destiny---It's addictiive with a unique points style fighting system. There is a sequel but I never played it.
Mace: The Dark Age
Goemon Great Adventure
Mystical Ninja 64
Ogre Battle 64
Wetris
Jame Bond: The World is Not Enough (the only EA Bond game even close to matching Goldeneye)
Alright so after doing some shopping I managed to get the following for $21.84:
Super Mario 64
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Blast Corps
Goldeneye
Now I'm off to play :)
