Who is Wario and Waluigi?

Are Wario and Waluigi related to the Mario bros.? Is Wario the evil twin brother of Mario? Who are they?

There was a comic in Nintendo Power way back when that showed the origin of Wario and his hatred for Mario. Basically, they were friends as kids, and Mario would always beat Wario in all the games they played. That's basically it.

I don't think Waluigi has any backstory...

Obviously inspired by the Wario character, Waluigi has become a familiar face in many of the non-Adventure based Mario games. Being tall and lanky, he represents Luigi's evil twin, and it is believed that he is Wario's brother... Of course this can't be completely confirmed, and it likely never will be until a DNA test is conducted.

Although I don't believe that the two characters are directly related, Wario is apparently Mario's evil twin. The "W" on his hat is the reversed version of Mario's "M", and his name seems to suggest an appetite for war and chaos... "Warui" is also a Japanese word that means bad or evil. Unlike the kindness and generousity displayed by Mario, Wario is greedy and selfish. He's becoming more common in the non-Adventure Mario games, but has also starred in his very own game, Wario World

Nintendo Power magazine Vol. 135 (August 2000 issue) enlightened us with the fact that Waluigi's name "comes from a rearrangement of the word [ijiwaru]—Japanese for 'someone who's bad.'"

Actually, Wario is in fact a Doppelganger of Mario if you ignore the BS Nintendo Power comic that ran in 1992.


Both are heroic... but Wario is materialistic and Mario is not. Wario is greedy, and he beats his enemies with brute force.

Never heard of Waluigi. Maybe they need to make some more games featuring him before people warm to the character.

I thought Wario was also a really stupid idea until I played Wario World on the GBA, which I was bowled over by, totally amazing! Also Wario Ware is supposed to be pretty cool, but I haven't played it yet. Not sure I can see myself twisting the GBA around in circles in public either! Would probably get some odd looks!
