View Full Version : Itching to play FF6 again, play my Anthology?

I got a great deal on FF Anthology a while ago but it's just been collecting dust on my shelf. I've read at a lot of places the load times are pretty unbearable for FF5 and FF6 on PS. Is it worth my time playing them? Reason I even ask rather than trying for myself is that my PS2 is an hour away right now in my apartment in college, and I'd have to drive there to get it.

The loading times aren't that bad. Not nearly as bad as Chrono Trigger. The thing that kills it on the PS1 is the slowdown in battles. It's horrendous. Play the SNES version if you can.

I actually never owned a SNES

I still remember the weekend my friend and I started and beat FF6 at his house, caffeine to 13 year olds = scary stuff.

edit: slow down in battles? Wait....you're telling me the PSX can't keep up with a 16 bit game? Or is it just a poorly written port?

I say that if you have it for PSX, it's more than fine/morally sound to use an emulator to play the SNES version.

Yeah but I'd much rather play it on 55" TV than a 19" LCD, on keyboard non the less

The cart is probably better, but I got my FF6 fix on the PS, and I don't remember load times being that bad, but carts have virtually no load times.

If you have the cart, play it, if not I probably wouldn't run out to buy it, I'd just play the PS version.

FF6 doesn't suffer that much from load times, the only one that really has problems is Chrono Trigger. Go ahead, you'll be fine.

Play the SNES version if you can.The SNES version is too easy & poorly translated. The PS1 version is the harder, more accurate version.

WHY IT'S SLOW: (1) It's not a port. The game turns your PS1 into a Super Nintendo emulator. So you're actually running two programs at the same time (FF6--->SNES emulator--->PS1 hardware).

(2) The game loads lots of data during battle. On the SNES it's no big deal, because cart access is near-instant. But on the PS1, the data comes from the CD & that creates slow-down.

HOW TO FIX: On your PS2, turn on the "fast loading" option under the PS1 Driver function. Problem solved.

Would this work for Chrono Trigger on the PS2 too?

he's right about the load fix, try it on games like xenogears and be amazed.

Are you thinking of FF 4?

I don't think FF 6 ever had an "easy version", and the translation on the snes was excellent.

It was FF 4 that had a shitty translation and an easy version, and FF Chronicles gave us the hard version and better translation.

Probably FF4. I get them confused.
Would "PS2 fast loading" for Chrono Trigger on the PS2 too?Probably. I never tried it, but I don't see why not. Fast-loading seems to work on all PS1 games.*

*except FF7. Fast-loading creates garbage.

My brother was playing it and the cutscenes get all choppy with the load fix on.

FF6 on psx had annoying load times whenever you enter/leave battles and menus, inferior sound quality despite being on a cd, and slowdown during battles, which usually happens while your scrolling through your items or magic menus.

As for sound, it's no worse-sounding than my Super Nintendo copy. Sounds near-identical.

I'll test it out later on tonight but I don't remember fast loading making too much of a difference.

And the sound is near identical but it's still inferior. As someone who has played through FF3/6 several times on Snes/sufamicom the sound quality degradation is very noticeable. Blame it on the emulation, eagle eyed fans of games can usually pick up any difference easily, no matter how small it is, when games are ported to different systems.

I recall that turning on the fast loading feature on the PS2 barely helped at all for the FFVI port. Anthology is an abomination in that regard, and I don't understand why people are ripping on the Chrono Trigger port so much, since FFVI is far, far worse when it comes to loading times. Anyhow, I've been re-playing through my SNES copy of the game for the last week or two, and couldn't be happier!

Or it's psychological

I just started playing and I have a 2.0 stereo setup hooked up to my TV (reference Paradigm speakers) and the game sounds great

PSone driver option? Where is this on the menu? Was this in early or late edition PS2s? I have the last model before they switched to P-Scan DVD playback, I forget the model number.

It's in the startup menu on ALL PS2 models, it's the menu you get when you start without a game or hold one of the buttons when it starts.

From there you can get to a screen where it lets you configure PS1 drivers.

I found it. I've never had load problems with PSone games but switched it to fast anyways.

I do get slowdown playing the final missions on Command and Conquer though when there are tons of sprites on the screen. It never ceases to amaze me how poorly the PSone and PS2 really do handle sprites and 2-D in general. It's one thing the Saturn absolutely PWN3D the PSone on, 2-D and sprites.

I played it last night both with the fast loading on and off. No noticeable difference whatsoever in terms of loading and the game had crazy slowdown/lag during screen filling magic attacks and when Cyan was doing his Quadra slam. I don’t know, I know it doesn’t bother some people but I had a hard time overlooking it.

Well I noticed the difference. W/o fast loading, the game had slow battles. With fast loading, there were no problems at all, except towards the end when fighting giant bosses.
